  • Chords are at the heart of almost all of my music. Here are some tricks I picked up along the way when designing my modular system around chord progression sequencing.

How do you come up with your chord progressions? Let me know in the comments 🙌🏽

Excellent dive! Loving these videos from you.
I usually start at the keyboard, recording an idea linear style til it clicks for me, then refining it in the MIDI editor, shaping it more closely to what I hear in my head. Years ago, I used to do a lot more writing out chord progressions by hand, or transcribing changes i heard that struck me and building from there-just bought some blank sheet music to try to get back into that.
I've never really tried this more aleatoric/generative approach-seems to relinquish choice a bit in a way that seems really fun and inspiring watching u do it. That cv looper looks really fun!
Don't think I'll be diving into modular land any time soon-maybe you could suggest some other plugins/m4l devices that might yield a similar process? Have started messing around a bit with the new ableton 12 midi tools, but haven't been super inspired by anything yet. Will check out cthulu for sure.
Also: is Thursday gonna be Braille Sounds day? Looking forward to the next one!

@@BenjaminJBromley I've heard good things about "Chordamist" from @daedelus! Not sure about other max for live plugins but Ableton 12 does have chord generating midi tools. I think for me the key is the ability to still "play" the progression order in even if I'm not playing all the notes. That might just mean a keyboard controller and some Ableton midi mapping!

@@BrailleSounds interesting, ya! Will look for that Daedalus thing.
So it seems what you were doing was less about chance, and more a way of separating the harmonic part of the process, voicings and what not, to be able to focus on the rhythms. Really dig that.
I was inspired by our mutual friend once who’d similarly put various chords on midi clips in ableton session view and assign them to midi notes and record performances into the arrangement view… was a fun approach to get playful with.
Recently did a similar thing via Kontakt scripting, w a constrained diatonic mapping of 7 chords per octave across the white keys with inversions and variations on the black keys, with modal shifting and transposition on macros… hopefully able to share it soon!

Hah! Yeah honestly - couldn't have done it without @schnoodlevideo's editing help! But now that everything is setup, its much less exhausting than coming up with album promo short form content :D

Yes of course I want a Sinfonion, damn it! Like you can't spell that without onion, something that makes you cry. Right?
Anyway, have you tried the Five12 Sequencer? If not I think you should. It's complex, seems hard for a novice and much to learn from videos and the manual, but one button per function, shallow menu, surprisingly fast to learn, and fun.
But for real, pros and cons of the Instruo vs ACL? I know, not comparable, but still, when would Harmonaig be of better use if ever?

🤣 The Five12 Sequencer looks AWESOME! I'm not sure exactly how it would fit into my system - does it do chords with individual V/Oct out? I know Sam Prekop uses one and his stuff sounds great these days! Might have to make room ;) In terms of the Harmonaig honestly it comes down to size. Harmonaig was great for a smaller, less sophisticated system. Yielded less diverse but easily pleasing results. Anyway - thanks for watching 🙌🏽
