UNDERATED, laugh out loud. He was huge WORLDWIDE OFF OF ONE TUNE VERY EARLY & signed to Geffen all over tv from pretty early too. Underrated is about the most overstated remark
It's good to have interviewers who let musicians speak. A lot love to cut ppl off and talk over them and through their words. Beck is very articulate and so linked in with everyone in the industry and crazy. Musical genius. Literally.
I love Beck and I love this album!!! The song Dark Places in particular gets stuck in my head all day long. I wish I could meet Beck and shake his hand or give him a hug because since I've discovered him 5 years ago I've been able to use his music to keep me sane through the everyday bullshit life can be. He's got something to fit whatever mood I'm in from day to day and it never gets old to me. THAT is art. He's so underrated and underappreciated for his awesomeness, but that's what makes him awesome and as though he's my secret weapon, because he's not overblown or wrecked by over popularity. He's just BECK.
While listening to the new album: Okay, at this point Beck is clearly a creative genius. And while other musicians are making music, he's conceptualizing.
He's a special type of genius. Not sure his music is saving lives, or helping move us towards world peace, but he is one dude that has brought us decades of great music, and never really repeats himself. He's a master of many genres of music, and is a genius doing so.
Beck looks like a Amish guy from the Midwest . . . who just won the lottery and went shopping for new clothes. He is a fantstic musician who happens to be relevant within the pop music genre.
Somebody came after me looking like a stalker that was a Stan... Of his. Honestly, when I was young, my first impression of him was loser... I like e pro & that's all I know. That anonymous creep wanted to blow up my comment section about his fan mania bs. Why the f do I care what other ppl follow? I'm not him. Come after me. Sarcasm. It is not that fn serious. I'm not worshipping science or wever pointless bs he was rambling on about

It must be so tiring for musicians, Beck included, to hear from fans every time they release a new album that it's not like x album and that they should make another album just like x album, or that they want x album era musician back. As a longtime Beck fan, and having seen him live, it's super annoying to hear people pining for Mellow Gold era Beck. It's as if musicians aren't allowed to grow as people as well. I think Hyperspace is a solid album, and Chemical is an especially stellar track. And for everyone getting upset over Pharrell's influence on the album, get over it. Beck didn't "sell out" because he used a trap beat on one song on the album. In my eyes, what makes Beck, Beck is that he truly is a chameleon of sound. Putting his entire discography on shuffle is more diverse and more wild of a ride than most of the Alt/Rock playlists curated by Spotify and Apple nowadays anyways.
Hyperspace is an epic album on all levels. It's just stunning if you keep an open minded musically. Songs like stratosphere, dark places and everlasting nothing are just superb.

You cannot imagine how much strength your support has given me during a difficult time. I appreciate you more than words can say. I hope you keep being a great fan. Where are you watching from?

Pretty much every track is epic on hyperspace, it's designed to be listened from start to finish in my view, there's a certain flow to it, the album makes sense that way.

Beck just has a different genre on every album. That has really allowed him to stay fresh for these 25+ years. He's not an artist where he has stayed the exact same style, drifted away from it for 2 or 3 albums where fans have complained that it doesn't sound like him. I love super hard rocking stuff (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Guero), his upbeat funk/pop/synth-pop (Midnite Vultures, Colors, Hyperspace), his mellower indie rock (Mutations, Modern Guilt), and his slower melancholy folk/rock (Sea Change (My favorite Beck album), and Morning Phase) and even his weirder pre-Mellow Gold stuff. Although One Foot in the Grave is a masterclass from him!

Creative spirit and beautifully inventive. Fascinating that he did scoring "play my work" as a way to create *your sound.* very interesting Family and remarkable connection to Johnny Cash which i think saved him.

What a great young journalist, just letting the interviewee take the reigns vocally and casually interjecting with stimulating questions is a valuable skill not many have.
7:09 so cool. music soothes the beast. this is due to the air vibrations that not only change the frequency of blood flow in the ears and thus brain, but also are felt throughout the body to change bloodflow in the heart.
Anybody who really dug this album may want to check out a UK / Brexit artist called Tim Please. He also sells sounds he designed on various synths. I've been trying to get him to write me an album for years but he's very hard to get a hold of now. I didn't have money or a lot of it when I found out he writes music. By the time I did. He vanished. Seriously go check out his stuff lol.
Mr Beck! where you referring to defender ? That game was so hard ! All the pros use to play it hardcore but me I was just too young to be able to get past a couple of minutes on the darn thing !
Huge Beck fan here. Everything was so good for so long! Morning Phase was a masterpiece. I was so excited for what was next, but it's all been absolute shit after Morning Phase. He sold out.
im willing to hire thom yorke to just to see if he can see himself doing it without losing focus on the other things hes looking at with his good eyes.
Oof. I’ve been a Beck fan since ‘94. I still am but this new album is wretched. It’s a higher quality version of every other top 40 corporate bullshit “album” that gets released. Beck used to rebel, putting out albums like Sea Change after Midnight Vultures and Mutations after Odelay. This album is nothing more than an artsy and trippy version of what everyone else is doing. Jonathan Leitch 1000%wrong. Beck can make whatever he wants. You think he’s trying to make hits? This album is just as great as any of his other albums. I just realized that I've been listening to Beck on and off for like 25 years now, and I've never heard him speak.
Matt Clark ME TOO

Have you not seen the futurama episode?
Totally agree. Concerts don't count.

I envy the dude, spastically.
Beck is back. Hell yes!!
And he’s got two turntables and a microphone

Beck is one insightful, intelligent, well spoken man.
He reminds me of Bowie, not in the way he looks or even sounds. Just his approach to the art.

Too much dance type shit though
Beck = Scientologist
Still love him tho
Arjun Jai He literally said in an interview that he wasn’t a scientologist

I like this observation 😂
@Noble Failures not a Scientologist anymore apparently.
I don't think he just "happens" to be relevant. if that was true, he would've been forgotten in the 90's.

Midnight Vultures..so way ahead of the curb. Amazing album.
Beck your music has helped me through some dark times. Thank you xx
He can talk my ear off anytime. I'd love to hear him and Thom Yorke make some compositions.
Oh fuck yes! Maybe a fun electro record then a beautiful singer songwriter somber LP.

Beck and Ben Folds our Mozart. We are fortunate to have song riders that are still writing organic music.

Saw him at Shaky Knees in Atlanta this past May. Front row too. One of the best musicians working today.
He gets pretty technical but in an accessible way. I love Beck. His music has brought joy.

Definitely the best on the album

Chemical is probably my least favorite on the album. Still good though.
Best living music artist by far. Come to Southern Europe, please!
I'll work with ya Beck....have always enjoyed your work through the years...and it has helped me through difficult times
Wow, thanks for the great interview/conversation, Mr. Hansen and NME.

Yeah, I can really hear that. You make good music, hope you make it :)
Beck, please make a record with Tom Waits
Really?
@@phoenixzappa7366 yes, I'd love to hear what those two would come up with

I think you only said that because of their hats.
They are acquainted, at least. Beck interviewed Tom for his website in 2009.
Man the interviewer really just cut him off. You could tell Beck was kinda off put too. “I talked your ear off.” Should have let him keep going.
Great interview! I really like the themes behind this album. Everyone who worked on album did an amazing job!
What a guy! I really like his earlier stuff like soul manure and one foot in the grave.
