That delay jam at the beginning transported me to the jungle world in Donkey Kong Country. Really cool functionality! The effects and amp metaverse is real
Yea I agree they definitely should include a foot switch with it that was what I thought right away, I don’t want to go to my amp or phone to change my effects in a live setting, but maybe I’m missing something here, I want to control my effects with my feet on the fly when I’m at practice or at a show
This is a pretty cool amp. 😎🤘🏻🎸 I did wonder at one point if they’ll release different pedals like modulation or delay. And now darkglass made an amp that has a lot of effects to upload with an app. That’s pretty impressive.
I want to love this, but I always find app based amps fall short for me. Not because of their sound. I just don't twiddle knobs the same when they are on a screen
Agreed--I already have all the effects I want that this amp has to offer (clean amp, VMT, a RAT for bass, chorus, flanger) on a pedalboard and I can tweak those on the fly anytime. I can see the advantage of buying this amp from an entryway perspective where someone doesn't have all those effects in a compact and a relatively budget-friendly package.
I'm definitely interested in using this more as a recording tool than a live amp. I would like to have a footswitch to pair with this amp before I'd use it live.
This is like my dream amp. What I want in an amp is a great clean tone, not really bothered about a built in overdrive in a solid state amp - I want drive effects to be modular so I can stack them as I choose. This is that, plus in app digital modelling for potentially unlimited experimenting. 😁😁😁
I was thinking the same thing that they should add a footswitch pedal to go between the presets. But what is the midi control solution your referring to?
When I want to change the effect while playing, do I have to step on the box or on my phone? Five effect patches, great, this will shorten the gigs to a max of five songs, good for the audience, they get home early. It sounds good, but there is nothing some other multis cannot do for less money, and with foot switches, and more patch memory.
I bought one! And then I returned it. :( The parameters were difficult to adjust in the app; the change didn't take effect until you lifted your finger from the screen, so you had to make a bunch of small tweaks to find where you wanted your tone. Graphic EQ was very difficult to adjust as the sliders were really tiny on screen and very close to each other. Only one knob on the front panel of the amp to map to onboard effects, unless you want to give up your EQs -- then you get up to five knobs. Even though you can attach a MIDI controller to it, when I looked into that, it only mapped the same knobs as the front panel. So what's the point if you can't expand it?? I had to turn the master volume up past 12 noon to get any sound out of it (and yes, I set the gain correctly). Either there's something weird with the gain stage, or other amps use linear taper (instead of audio taper) pots, where most of your gain comes before the 3 o'clock position, and the rest of it is almost no change. When I first got the amp, I needed to update its firmware. So I did. While it was updating, I kept noodling on my bass, and sound came through the DI output, but glitchy. Unreasonable of me to expect the amp to continue working while updating its firmware, but it drove a point home: If the computer in this thing ever fails or freezes, you get nothing -- no straight-through analog bypass. After turning the amp off, you'll have to pair your phone to it again, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Really, almost all of my complaints about this amp are actually of the app, but since the app is such a huge part of operating this amp, that made it a deal-killer. And then the cooling fan developed a mechanical rattle. Back it went. It's a cool idea, but it's not there yet.
It’s impressive for sure I’ll wait for more updates before jumping the gun on this. Would like to see more amp models in this svt and the way to Mesa would be sick and darkglass answer to the kemper. P.s midi foot controller to work with this is on the way! Would love to see an sansamp in this soon also
how to control it live or at rehearsal? how to turn off effect during song ? am I able to turn on distortion or anything while playing or phone is a must ? without footswitch its looks useless...
I think it's very cool although the distortions not something I would probably every use. It does seem like there are a lot of things besides that I probably would use. Giving it some serious thought.
I went to Headrush simply to do all this and have had to IR Darkglass cabs and simulate Darkglass tone - was a huge effort. Now - Pfffft - Less to carry and actual Darkglass tone. Mine is on order already.
Hi, I got a question. is there a pitch shifter included? It would fit me perfect but I do NEED a pítch effect. Right now I use "the Drop" from DigiTech and I want to get rid of it. I was thinking of the HX stomp for effects, midi input etc. and found out about the E500 and I really got into it. So... the pitch shifter... please tell me there is one included!!!!!!!!
I have a love hate with these. I love the idea of them. I like this one more than say something like the HX Stomp. But... I've learned can murder any decent bass tone when presented with endless options lol. This may work better for me as a pedal guy since the interface is essentially digital pedals. This has me interested as I use mostly Darkglass pedals anyway and can downsize my pedal board. This and a midi controller would be fantastic for travel gigs.
10:52 You mentioned you wished there was a foot switch, but the manual mentions a Darkglass MIDI foot switch for changing presets, have you heard anything about this?
Don't understand why they didn't include other preamps types (Ampeg/GK/Aguilar/Orange/etc.). Haven't been very impressed with Darkglass' previous products with digital components (high noise floor) so interested to hear if they've made improvements. Also seems a few of the tones in the video would get completely lost in a live mix.
Totally agree with you here. The lack of midrange after the effects are added in will sink you like a ship. They need to add preamps like you said. Because effects while cool, are way less useful live on bass. But being able to use different amp tones might be more useful. Still super cool tech, but nothing I’d buy atm.
Great video Patrick thanks! Do you reckon the amp at some point will get tubey oompfh added? When I set up my Torpedo Cab M+ for some grind through its poweramp modelling combined with the Ampeg 8x10 impulse it really gets that ballsy, 'pushing air' character. Having that inside the amp would mean having the complete scope of tones I need inside one box - something I have been wanting for a long time. Right now I still bring a pedalboard which has the Cab M+, Alpha-Omicron, fuzz and a Cali76cb compressor.
My problem with these is I can't imagine this amp working a decade from now. Once darkglass releases The shiny new thing they'll support this for a year or two more and then you'll end up with an app that no longer connects to the server. I'm going to need open source software and hardware before I take any of these products seriously.

This honestly looks game changing. I can see myself getting this to replace my entire rig.
Same.
So, did it replace your entire rig?
My GK fusion 550 just gave up the ghost... I bought this. Lets see how it goes.

I just saw the launch video and immediately wondered when your video would drop. Haha this thing is so sick

First song sounds very much like Faunts, love it!
Do you think they’ll be adding the Microtubes X to the digital lineup?
Darkglass more like Dark G.A.S.
10/10 😆
My bank's manager cringes every time Darkglass releases a new product.
I think they should make a future update to make the Intelligent Footswitch compatible with the e500
duuuude what a cool amp. and your review is great!
Excellent video, congratulations!
How do you make changes to a live to put on and take off effects at the time of the event?
Thanks!
Very cool amp, once they add some foot switch options I'll be more interested.
Working on the footswitch atm!

Because Darkglass didn't have anything like this I had to buy the fender stage 800 which has similar features just no Darkglass!

Great video! One question: is the effect loop in series or parallel?
So I wonder if they'd add the other effects (not distortion) to the digital side of the other amps or if it's just exclusive to this
Sorry, it is just exclusive to the Exponent 500 :(
so it does not come with the 7-pin foot controller. Sad days XD Still an amazing amp even with that let down.

Update to e500 v2 with stereo send return, stereo speakon outputs, stereo xlr DI, and take my money
Where's the sliders from the preview???
