Hands down, this is my all-time favorite style of furniture (especially Chinese Chippendale). I originally learned that the ball and claw represented an Oriental dragon (my zodiac sign) clutching a pearl. The carving of this type of foot on Townsend Goddard furniture is the best depiction to my mind; this is where the center of the claws stand proud of the pearl. Excellent video.
Chippendale, Sheridan and Robert Adam style furniture are simply the most beautiful in my opinion.

Thank you for the update. The dragon makes sense since Chinoiserie was quite popular during the 18th century.
