I love Charlotte as a character because she was rich and had her own business. My favorite moment was she screams when Angelica says a bad word. It's one of my favorite episodes.
@@DialUpDigestActually Charlotte Pickles was voiced by Tress MacNeille in the original Nickelodeon Rugrats television animated series from 1991 to 2004 and it's spin off series "All Grown Up!" from 2003 to 2008 at 0:09.
My favorite quote from Charlotte would probably be when she said, "If Angelica is ever gonna make it in a male-dominated power structure, she's gotta eat, breathe, and SWEAT self esteem."
She gets this victim complex from her dad though... If Drew dealt with it, and was the parent around more, because Charlotte can afford that, Angelica might do better.
@@carlosmedrano6868 But he could be a stay at home parent, especially considering how much he likes to spoil Angelica, you think he could give her the best thing of all: a parent at home.
Not sure in 1991, but in 1983 when the first cell phone was commercialy available the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X also known as the brick phone, retailed for $3,995. Weighing 2 pounds, it took 10 hours to charge, and offered up to 30 minutes of talk time, assuming you could hold it that long. Back in the 80s and early 90s, cell phones were status symbols and going out in public talking on one said a lot about who you were.
This show came out the year I was born so I really was a Rugrat! This, Hey Arnold and Dexter's Lab were my favourite cartoons growing up, DBZ being my favourite anime.

I'm glad they wrote her as well rounded as they did. She could've been so one note. But, the creative team gave her different situations and problems to flesh out her character.
@@fumothfan9just imagine. If Charlotte and Bob were had to cross paths before she meet Drew and dated. I wonder Bob would have broken it off with her because she wanted to be in control of the situation. Makes a good what if scenario.
Out of all the adults in the show Charlotte has my respect the most. Despite being the CEO of mega Corp she always tried to make time for her friends and family. Plus between her and Drew Charlotte isn't afraid of putting the foot down raising Angelica and that's a good thing to. If left unchecked Angelica could've turned out much worse in all grown-up. Even though she let Angelica watch the godfather alone while closing a deal once 😂. The woman may have a stick up her ass but she loves her family more than anything. I remember when Tommy was scared by a car alarm and she gently calm him down.
Great points Slane. Charlotte and Drew were strict with Angelica when they needed to be. Very true, I love how she was able to be both strict and serious and kind and loving.
@@DialUpDigest Charlotte is a balanced character. Yes she's a business woman with a no bull policy and runs mega Corp with a iron fist. Yet when around friends and family she's gentle and would do anything to protect them. Not to mention in AGU she's doing everything she can to make sure Angelica becomes responsible and cherish her family.
Charlotte's issue was that her time with Angelica was so limited. Charlotte pumped her full of self-esteem, but she had clear boundaries and limits for Angelica. Drew just gave Angelica anything she wanted with little-to-no threshold. He constantly pacified her and rarely held his ground.
@@lilnike2while yeah she technically is a better parent than her pushover husband Charlotte isn’t exactly a great mother either. While she definitely loves her daughter and wants her to be a great woman when she grows up she seems to barely spend any time with her. Literally every scene she is in she’s always talking on her phone with her assistant and always seems to be too busy. This along with Drew being a spineless pushover gives Angelica the mindset that she can get away with anything as long as her mother is busy and knows her father will not hesitate to do anything for her.
In my opinion Charlotte is a great character because she was the opposite of a typical stay at home mom. She was very independent wealthy powerful and proud woman who had her own business and you could see Angelica see her as her idol. Although sometimes her parenting skills were questionable to me at times I did love when she punished Angelica when she deserved it.
Remember how the flash back from "No more cookies" revealed the day of Angrlica's birth. While being escorted out of the hospital, she said to Jonathan on the phone "of course I'll be back in the office tomorrow."😅
I really like Charlotte, despite being a workaholic, she always cared for her family, and was also more assertive than Drew, especially when Angelica gets herself in trouble, also very nice video as always DUD! 😀
One thing I noticed about your videos on Didi, Charlotte, and Betty was the concept of feminism. All 3 women express different types of feminism and women's choice. I think a video about feminism in 90s cartoons might be interesting. Certainly some roles haven't aged well but I think some have! But I'm glad to see the different expressions of gender roles in Rugrats.
I always thought this show was amazing at showing different types of female characters who were all strong in different ways and had amazing personalities. Kimmy was the only character who just seemed like a random insert but even that changed in All Grown Up. I knew I loved this show for a good reason!! Charlotte is an amazing role model, I wanted to be her when I was a little girl
Even as a 80's/90's boy, Charlotte was one of my favourite characters. She took crap from nobody and was constantly motivated to go after what she wanted. Her ultra-competitive businesswoman personality was hilarious and she was one of the most competent characters on the show. The V.A's voicework did alot to make her fun to watch.
I love that charlotte was headstrong without being mean. Sometimes when people are writing for strong women they just make them insanely rude and unlikeable
That's really when people are writing for strong characters in general, both male and female. When was the last time you saw a male character in Charlotte's state of life who wasn't just an uncaring corporate asshole?
I think my favorite Charlotte episode was when they were trying to take over that mom and pop shop and she showed just how damn good of a momma she is. While she scolded her and explained to her kid that she wont fire her from being her daughter, but what she did was very bad. She kinda explained it in a way Angelica would understand as a CEO's kid.
Connecting with your kid in a way where they would understand from observing you is pretty damn intuitive. Strong communication skills of a businesswoman.
The banter between her and Jonathan was always hilarious. She's quite an interesting character. A CEO in her mid-30s, she has a lot of success but her workaholism does put some strains on her relationships, like with Drew (he mentioned that she was disappointed with his quarterly earnings in the first movie, forcing him to take another shift) and especially Angelica. My thought is that she leaves most of the parenting to Drew, that's why Angelica is so spoiled; opposite-sex parents tend to be laxer, I've noticed. I mean, she was on a work call RIGHT after giving birth. I also find her cutthroat side more interesting, like when she was talking about crushing the competition on Christmas Eve, worrying that she might've offended a dictator when she explained Passover to him, or in the clip you showed, where she admired Jonathan trying something underhanded. She and Drew are quite the contrast to Didi and Stu, what with them being content with their lives as a teacher and a freelance inventor.
She really rocked that leotard exercise outfit! I can’t help but think Charlotte was inspired by the Twin Peaks character “Charlotte”, who is only seen by her hand and big cell phone in that show.
I personally hated how Charlotte treated Jonathan. I do like how she's a boss and takes charge but she does neglect Angelica alot. When she had time she would tend to her more but overall tho Charlotte has a lot of necessary character traits that is needed for her lifestyle. She exudes the power that every woman should aspire to be like.
I think she only acted that way towards Johnathan as a result of her being a woman in a male dominated industry. The men there probably doubted her ability to be in such a role or she never wanted Johnathan to get the wrong idea to overstep her as his boss. I work in such a field and as a woman I often have to put my foot down with men at my job all the time for the same reasons. All in all, basically for Charlotte she’s like “don’t get it twisted, I’m the one in charge” 🤣
She was voiced by Tress MacNeille, not Cheryl Chase. Also Grandpa Boris is seen on a cell phone when he makes the infamous "Hello, Dr. Kevorkian" joke in the home movies episode
@@DialUpDigest You're welcome. No problem. I hate being the guy to make corrections like that but I'm currently working on YT playlists documenting the filmographies of various actors and comedians in my favorite shows and movies which you can check out on my channel
My favorite Charlotte quote regarded her taste in art, preferring the work of a prominent 80’s LGBTQ photographer over an artist who painted traditional portrayals of American life: “These clients are very conservative so take down the Mapplethorpe and put up that 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴 Norman Rockwell painting…right it’s in the janitor’s closet” Charlotte said gay rights!!! 🏳️🌈
Agreed with so much you stated in the video...But, I felt like the one thing missing from the show were moments when it was simply her and Angelica connecting. I do believe that Angelica acts out because her parents aren't connecting in a proper manner. They do punish when necessary, and I applaud, but I felt like there were missing moments. Moments when both parents are just spending time with their child.
Charlotte Pickles was actually voiced by Tress MacNeille in the original series and Anna Chlumsky in the reboot. Cheryl Chase only voiced Angelica. In the episode "Angelica Orders Out", Angelica used Stu's voice modulator, and she sounds exactly like her mother (Tress MacNeille voiced Angelica when she spoke through the invention).
Well done on this video! As a kid, I pretty much saw Charlotte as "the woman with a phone glued to her ear". Re-watching as an adult made me appreciate her in a new light. Her work life is extremely busy as a CEO, but she did the best she could to be in Angelica's life and raise her strong. With cost of living the way it is now, that's relatable to a lot of us in real life.
She was a hard worker, focused and determined. She didn't have anything really nasty in her she was just to headstrong in her approach, and that leading to her overlooking angelica's flaws and personality. That said I always liked how she'd mellow out outside of her busy work life and take moments for family, friends and living in the moment, before getting right back to being a boss.
I remember her character as kid , Charlotte she was very deep in her job and less about her child and have big go Hornets on Jonathan@drew Sometimes Angelica likes to feel comfort , by bully the babies for obvious reasons but deep down she really like the babies ,she doesn't like to be alone and her best friend Susie
I recall seeing a video promo for Charlotte by Nick ReWind that praised Charlotte as a Feminist Icon in the "Male Dominated World." I.....honestly don't think that's what the creators of the show were going for. I'm pretty sure they were more going for the "don't be a work-a-holic and spend more time with your family" lesson for parents.
She doesnt do everything perfectly, but she does her best, and she doesnt get overwhelmed by the kind of time management and stress that would crush me.
How she is neglectful? Angelica is well fed, has plenty of nice clothes and toys, attends accredited day cares and pre-schools, and Angelica does feel liked by her family. We never see her really wish Charlotte worked less
@@rosesweetcharlotte How much time she actually spends with her parents though? An infamous quote from Charlotte after giving birth to Angelica "What? Of course I'll be back in the office tommorrow Johnathan" Angelica is the classic example of a well off kid. Who has everything a kid would want material wise. But lacks that time and attention from Mom and dad.
Exactly. Angelica and Charlotte will both be hit with that in future. 32 year old Angelica is going to be like “why were you never really there for me?“ While 76 year old Charlotte is going to be in a very expensive nursing home in Florida. Wondering why she doesn’t see her daughter and her grandchildren anymore.
Agreed Charlotte was neglectful. While Angelica had material needs met, she never had the true attention of either parent which led to her behavior. That family was materially rich, but were poor when it came to having emotional needs met.
ROFL I didn't understand what Drew was saying to Angelica when she was holding her breath when I was a kid and now that I heard it again now, that's the funniest response to that action I've ever heard 🤣
When it comes to Charlotte, I can see Angelica actually turning out like her as what we saw in all grown up she does seem to be taking up after her mother. I mean most the time is her actions doesn’t actually make any good excuse, especially when it comes to Angelica, being spoiled along with even threatening her assistant Jonathan, I feel bad for that guy. Besides her being a workaholic neglectful mother, there have been times where she had put her foot down. Disappointing Angelica and try to be there for her daughter. In the first Rugrats film boy that film was dark as hell even with Angelica went missing and when they united she did throw her phone away though she didn’t really need to do that she could’ve just hung up or put it on silent. Either way those were the only moments that she gets credit, but it doesn’t really excuse her actions mostly in fact, if you look up, good to worst mother, she’s at the silver medal level of bad moms. The only high-ranking mother is Miriam from Harold, who has earned the gold medal of being both neglectful and an alcoholic
Drew wasn't a man child. He just a textbook beta. A woman like Charlotte would need a more submissive man like him. That's not to put him down or anything. He's just not the masculine leader. Charlotte is.
Yaaas Charlotte my queen. I strive to be like that in my personal life. Minus the bossy part. Yes to working out as much as I can and juggling my "business". Currently holding down 2 jobs but I feel it in my heart that I'm on my way to something even better.
I like Charlotte as a character but I wish she was kinder to Didi and Jonathan, and more patient with Angelica. She’s quite disrespectful to Didi sometimes, gives Jonathan pretty ridiculous orders that go beyond work (though I understand it’s played for laughs), and when Angelica wanted to talk to her about the baby, she just brushed her off with, “Angelica the baby is going to come and that’s that!” If she had taken a bit of time to explain that the baby will come but it won’t change how much she loves her daughter, Angelica probably wouldn’t have had that nightmare. Overall, I do find her very interesting, and I’m glad Rugrats included a full-time powerful working mom among their diverse cast. Thanks for doing these analyses, I’ve seen a few and will keep checking them out!
When you watch this show as an adult, Charlotte is the absolute worst. While Drew spoils Angelica by giving into her, Charlotte teaches Angelica that being a Machiavellian bully is acceptable. I felt bad for Jonathan; Charlotte would be an absolute nightmare to work under.
Lol agreed, I know her treatment of Jonathan is played for laughs but I’d hate to have a boss who talks down to you on a daily basis. And honestly when she said she would give him a promotion, she only did it to deter him from coming after her.
In AGU i can see alot of influence Charlotte had on Angelica in many ways later on she's bossy and independent it's something i noticed when watching the sequel to the series.
Thank you for taking this request again thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you oh and I have the idea please do an Animaniacs video of the original series please so many other ideas that I that I'm hoping you would do a video of my favorite cartoons if you don't mind it of course
Charlotte has always been a complex character. Yes, she's a strong woman and career focused. It's in this that Angelica admires and loves her mom for. The problem Charlotte has is that everything and everyone is second to her job. She's manipulative and domineering. Angelica sees this and imitates it. Throw in her pushover father and you have a spoiled child. What is harder to see is that the reason Angelica replicates her mother's behavior is because she's desperate for the attention. When she emulates Charlotte she becomes praised for her behavior.
This is that successful women these girls don’t understand, she never not once said she didn’t need a man. Btw Betty and char. We’re the goats on that show as moms
I think in All Grown Up she was no longer a workaholic. I think it’s good to do a little work but I feel sorry for her because I could never be a workaholic.
It would've been easy to fall into trappings with Charlotte, be it by remaining a one-note busy assertive businesswoman, making her look completely uncaring and unmemorable, but her crazy busy schedule, her actually caring for those around her, and never dropping the phone even while doing other activities, made her way more memorable and likeable.
One of my fave moments with her is when she befriended the Italian restaurant owner Jack Montello when she was coincidentally looking for a "Jack", as in a jack to fix her car.
Fun Fact: Charlotte is always drawn purposely off-model with her mouth always being on the far side of her face (like a Sonic the Hedgehog character) because she is permanent 'talking on a cellphone' face. Watch the video again, every other Rugrats character had their mouth cut all the way across their face, Charlotte talks out of the side of her face.
I believe she quit the corporate life 10 years later. She became more of a mom who just wants to do her job. I think she now works with Betty at the coffee shop as their marketer. Charlotte was always the serious mom that prioritized her career. When Johnathan took her job she had to reevaluate and try something new. Drew took on the breadwinner role as he rose up the ranks as an accountant. We do see Charlotte with her hair down when she loses her CEO job. Oddly Charlotte can drive stick shift which is really rare as no car has that anymore except maybe a few die hard fans who restore old cars.
I always liked her & felt aware of the tone trying to dump on her, looking back there's no proof that she didn't make time for her daughter because how much do we see any of the adults interacting with the babies? The whole plot is the babies doing whatever they want & they wonder off constantly.
You know Charlotte had a lot of money, she not only had a computer, but also a cell phone AND a laptop in the early 90's. You had to have big money for those back then individually, let alone all three!
What a character. Haha! I was too young to get some of these things or remember them. Shes quite amazing even though she could spend a bit more time with her family and wow shes making ALL their money. 😂 (Ah but Drew is assertive? Maybe I'm misremembering the show 😂)
I find Charlotte the third best mom in Rugrats, behind Kira whose behind Lucy (the Carmicheals were probably the best parents in the whole franchise, excluding the cgi reboot, I hate that thing)
Charlotte Pickles was such a babe in the original series, as far as Klasky-Csupo adult females go, but in "All Grown Up" she looked hideous after her facelift!

Kim Cattrall defo would play her in a live action
"I know where the bodies are buried..."
This woman shaped this mother character of my own character that's been with me for years.
I remember her character as kid , Charlotte she was very deep in her job and less about her child and have big go Hornets on Jonathan@drew
Sometimes Angelica likes to feel comfort , by bully the babies for obvious reasons but deep down she really like the babies ,she doesn't like to be alone and her best friend Susie
I agree, Angelica was mean to the babies but I think she was just lonely and liked being around them.
I recall seeing a video promo for Charlotte by Nick ReWind that praised Charlotte as a Feminist Icon in the "Male Dominated World."
I.....honestly don't think that's what the creators of the show were going for. I'm pretty sure they were more going for the "don't be a work-a-holic and spend more time with your family" lesson for parents.
They were showing how the rising costs of living made it necessary for women to work.
She doesnt do everything perfectly, but she does her best, and she doesnt get overwhelmed by the kind of time management and stress that would crush me.
Sadly in the all grown up series. Charlotte loses her job to Johnathan and is in employed for a bit until her nephew Dill gets her back on her feet
Charlotte Pickles Is Voiced By Tress MacNeil.
Charlotte was the DEFINITION of neglectful. It is because of her that Angelica is so spoiled!
Of course I'll be back in the office tommorrow Johnathan"
Angelica is the classic example of a well off kid.
@@kaylajames3098Give us that spin-off, Nick.
Agreed Charlotte was neglectful. While Angelica had material needs met, she never had the true attention of either parent which led to her behavior. That family was materially rich, but were poor when it came to having emotional needs met.
Charlotte is everything a
Mother
Boss and a role model should be
Charlotte is such an interesting character! Are you going to do an analysis on Chas Finster?
Thank you Christina! Yes, a video on Chas Finster is on my list of future videos! 😊
@@DialUpDigest how about a video about Kira?
She was my favorite adult and Susie was my favorite rugrat
Lol I always looked at Charlotte as the man in the relationship and Drew as the man child.🤣
Drew wasn't a man child. He just a textbook beta. A woman like Charlotte would need a more submissive man like him. That's not to put him down or anything. He's just not the masculine leader. Charlotte is.
Charlotte is one of my favorite characters in the series
As an adult, I have respect for Charlotte for being a mother and a career woman
Lol agreed, I know her treatment of Jonathan is played for laughs but I’d hate to have a boss who talks down to you on a daily basis. And honestly when she said she would give him a promotion, she only did it to deter him from coming after her.
According to most of the comments here, treating your subordinate like dog **** is just being a strong assertive woman and laudable lol.
You're welcome Cassyluv!
I could never be a workaholic either...I need balance ✨
That's partially because they fired her in one episode. So she tried being a stay at home mom.
@@PHSDM104 what episode was that? I don’t think I’ve seen it.
@@Icebot7 S4 E6 Lost At Sea
@@PHSDM104 thanks! I just saw the episode!
Charlotte was always my favorite of the mothers on Rugrats.
Charlotte is dynamic, gorgeous woman. She is too good for Drew.
Tres MacNeillie voiced Charlotte Pickles. Not Cheryl Chase.
No mam she's voiced by a woman named tress according to the credits
Fun Fact: Charlotte is always drawn purposely off-model with her mouth always being on the far side of her face (like a Sonic the Hedgehog character) because she is permanent 'talking on a cellphone' face. Watch the video again, every other Rugrats character had their mouth cut all the way across their face, Charlotte talks out of the side of her face.
Loved this analysis of this woman boss and mother.
Charlotte was voiced by tress McNeal
Charlotte Pickles is the epitome of being a CEO and a Working Mother
I was kind of surprised to think Drew and Charlotte still had time to sleep together to even have another child
I wouldn’t trust drew with my life cause the way he made Chaz lose all his money grinds my gears
wish we saw Charlotte's family in the show
Between Drew's doormat doting and Charlotte's ruthless attitude, is it any wonder Angelica turned out the way she did?
I believe she quit the corporate life 10 years later. She became more of a mom who just wants to do her job. I think she now works with Betty at the coffee shop as their marketer. Charlotte was always the serious mom that prioritized her career. When Johnathan took her job she had to reevaluate and try something new. Drew took on the breadwinner role as he rose up the ranks as an accountant. We do see Charlotte with her hair down when she loses her CEO job. Oddly Charlotte can drive stick shift which is really rare as no car has that anymore except maybe a few die hard fans who restore old cars.
That’s my girl
Actuality, Charlotte's voiced by Tress MacNielle. Cheryl Chase voices Angelica.
I always liked her & felt aware of the tone trying to dump on her, looking back there's no proof that she didn't make time for her daughter because how much do we see any of the adults interacting with the babies? The whole plot is the babies doing whatever they want & they wonder off constantly.
6:28 🤣🤣🤣 Classic
Can you make a video of Drew?
There's a mess up here, the voice actress for Charlotte is Tress Macneille, who also voices Babs Bunny in Tiny Toons, and Dot in Animaniacs.
You know Charlotte had a lot of money, she not only had a computer, but also a cell phone AND a laptop in the early 90's. You had to have big money for those back then individually, let alone all three!
0:35 To sum up her outfit:
SLAY! SLAYYYY
She completely inspired the character of Princess Carolyn from bojack horseman
She hasn't any ears...how does she smell
She shouldn't use the phone while driving. Nice suit
Very true, I never realized how dangerous of a driver she was because she was always on her phone!
Great video
Thank you! 😊
What about the grow-up episode?
And she said she knows where the bodies are buried. That's wow.
DID PABLO PICASSO INSPIRE CHAROLETTE PICKLES 🎨 😅
Charlotte Pickles aka the Orginal Cartoon Girl Boss
Charlotte Pickles is 1 of my favorite cartoon characters of all time. In truth she’s a perfect character for SEGA Streets of Rage!🤗🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻⛳️☕️☕️☕️🏍🛫
Charlotte was definitely a strong business lady alright. Sometimes I wonder if she used to be a spoiled brat herself at Angelica's age.
What a character. Haha! I was too young to get some of these things or remember them. Shes quite amazing even though she could spend a bit more time with her family and wow shes making ALL their money. 😂
(Ah but Drew is assertive? Maybe I'm misremembering the show 😂)
I guess her daughter Angelica takes after her mother Charlotte! Reminds me of Chloe and her mother Audrey from miraculous Ladybug!
I love Charlotte she was just like my mom. I remember watching this as a kid and comparing her to my mom.
I find Charlotte the third best mom in Rugrats, behind Kira whose behind Lucy (the Carmicheals were probably the best parents in the whole franchise, excluding the cgi reboot, I hate that thing)
It was actually Tress MacNellie that voiced Charlotte Pickles, and not Cheryl Chase.
The Shoulder Pads 🫢 so 80-90's
Charlotte Pickles was such a babe in the original series, as far as Klasky-Csupo adult females go, but in "All Grown Up" she looked hideous after her facelift!
Trees pretty much uses her real voice when she does Charlotte.
Good video
Thank you Christopher! ☺
@@DialUpDigest you're welcome!
This what before iPhones because this is what millennial children remember watching in the 1990’s and 2000’s.
Please do your research as the person you mentioned as her voice actress is actually Tress MacNeille in the original show and movies.
I looked up to her as a kid 😂😂😂😂
@DialUpDigest Fun Fact: The voice actor of her husband Drew Pickles and Charles Finster is Michael Bell who also voiced Raziel and Melchiah in the Legacy of Kain games.
