Haakon Sigurdarson (Haakon Jarl) (Old Norse: Hákon Sigurðarson, (c. 937-995) was the de facto ruler of Norway from about 975 to 995. Sometimes he is styled Hakon the Powerful (Old Norse: Hákon jarl hinn ríki) through Ágrip af Nóregskonungasögum and Historia Norwegiæ gives the less flattering name, that is Hakon Bad. Haakon was the son of Sigurd Haakonsson, Jarl of Lade and ruler of Trøndelag and Hålogaland. His mother was Bergljot Toresdatter, daughter of Tore Ragnvaldsson, Jarl of Møre. Adam of Bremen wrote that he was "of the stock of Ivar and descended from a race of giants". In the sagas, Haakon claimed descent from the divine lineage of Sæming, son of Odin. The Hakon Jarl Runestones in Sweden may refer to him. Haakon became earl after his father was killed by King Harald Greycloak's men in 961. Haakon Jarl warred with King Harald for some time, until he was forced to flee to Denmark, where he conspired with Harald Bluetooth against Harald Greycloak.
The two arranged the death of Harald Greycloak around 971, after which Harald Bluetooth invited his foster-son to be invested with new Danish fiefs. Civil war broke out between Haakon Jarl and the surviving brothers of Harald Greycloak, but Haakon proved victorious. After this, Haakon Jarl ruled Norway as a vassal of Harald Bluetooth, but he was in reality an independent ruler. For Harald, he attacked Götaland and killed its ruler Ottar Jarl. Around 973-974, he went to Denmark to help Harald Bluetooth of Denmark in his defense against the Holy Roman Emperor Otto II. Otto's forces successfully opposed an attempt by Harald to throw off the German yoke. After that Haakon paid no taxes to Denmark.
Haakon was a strong believer in the old Norse gods, even after Harald Bluetooth forced him to accept baptism around 975 and assigned him clergymen to take to Norway to spread Christianity. When a favourable wind came for Haakon to leave, he commanded the clergymen to return ashore, and broke his allegiance to Denmark. In 977 Vladimir I of Kiev fled to him, collecting as many of the Viking warriors as he could to assist him to recover Novgorod, and on his return the next year marched against Yaropolk I of Kiev. In 986, a Danish invasion fleet led by the fabled Jomsvikings was defeated at the Battle of Hjörungavágr.
In 995, a quarrel broke out between Haakon and the Trønders just as Olaf Tryggvason, a descendant of Harald Fairhair arrived. Haakon quickly lost all support, and was killed by his own slave and friend, Tormod Kark, while hiding in the pig sty in the farm Rimul in Melhus. Jarlshola is the location in Melhus thought to have been the hiding place of Haakon Jarl and Tormod Kark on their last night before the infamous murder at Rimul. After his death, Haakon Jarl's two sons Eirik Håkonson and Sveinn Hákonarson, fled for protection to the king of Sweden, Olof Skötkonung.

Using people of any race as a tool for their own political agenda should be considered extremly racist and disrespectful.

You just described 99% of politicians, except using your own people can't be described as racist. If you think the career politicians respect the people you need a reality check.

@@whiskeytangosierra6 I never said that, and you also gotta seperate real politics vs political activism, which is the case in movies etc.
If minorities are used as a tool for political activism its extremly racist, because then you divide different races into categories, which the left often do.
If you are a minority reading this, no matter if you’re black, asian or any other minority, you need to call out this kind of racist political agenda before it gets out of control.
Can you imagine in the future, Martin Luther King being played as an Asian Woman? Because that is no different from placing a Black Woman as a Norwegian Jarl.

It honestly really annoys me that Vikings did this, they know exactly what they doing by putting a “person of colour” in this role. If the real Jarl Håkon was from Africa then the one in the show should be played by an African but as we know this is not the case. They did this to appeal to the “woke” culture and to show “inclusivity”.
I would not expect a show about Nigeria to feature a historically black Nigerian king as a white man and I would not want this to happen as it would be an insult to the real person and others.
This is coming from someone from England with a Norwegian grandfather so I can imagine how much more annoying this will be if you are actually from Norway

It's the one thing you never should do, change historical people, especially important ones, to make modern day political statements. They could have picked any name for this fantasy Jarl, but had to pick the name of a hero with opposite color (edit: not opposite race) and gender instead. Who is this exactly for anyway? I've read comments from black people that they don't really want something as unrealistic and woke in such a series, because they dont watch it to identify.

You’re right. Most black people I know don’t want this kind of foolishness. We don’t like being depicted as Peter Pan, Wendy, Alice in Wonderland, Lancelot, Jarl Anyone, or other beloved European figures. We want our own stories told. It is laziness on the part of the filmmakers because they just use black actors as fill-in spackle rather than researching our own history. These sorts of actions are disrespectful to everyone involved.

Thank you for this. I've been called racist in expressing my view that it's disrespectful to portray European historical / mythological charecters as any other ethnicity.
Woke casting annoys me because the other way around there are cries of 'whitewashing' yet we can have a black Ann Boleyn, Achillies, Dickens charecters, Heimdall etc, without it being called 'blackfacing.'
I've been told by the woke that my faith is 'made up' I follow the God's of my ancestry, and we, (whites) should be colour-blind to casting.
Im not 'racist' I try and follow the good advice in the Havemel to live a good life, such as offering shelter and food to those in need. But then I also encourage people to find and follow their own ancestry, so won't open Blotr or Moot up to those not of our heritage.

I’m glad to see you explaining this to where people can see for themselves the actual historical figure ! Awesome content I never miss an upload of your videos !

Also, there is nothing toxic about masculinity. These weak minded men that are running around today are way worse than a traditional man. Most men who have done horrible things aren't really respected by other men anyway. Men really need to go on a mission to find themselves again the same way women need to find themselves. It's all about our choices, we don't always make the perfect choice, but we can do our best not to do it again and not damage anyone else.

Even though I can’t get behind a lot of these new movements, I do agree with the notion of toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity doesn’t mean masculinity is toxic, but a sect of it is. Eg. toxic masculinity to me is especially why many men (me included) don’t go to therapy and ask for help, but instead bottle our feelings inside, because we tell ourselves to ”man up/men don’t cry/men don’t do that”. We have this vision of what a man is supposed to be like, which shapes our pride and ego already as children, leading us into situations that could’ve been avoided, which hurt us in the long run. To me, this is a big reason why men’s depression and suicide rates globally are way higher than women’s. I will never judge another man for being like this, because I’ve been there, but there is a better way to live life. Get in tune with yourself and your emotions, ask for someone to help you through it (which is the hardest thing for a young man to do). Also, there are definitely toxic aspects of femininity which never get discussed, but that’s a whole ’nother story.

    • @luxetitan2673

If anyone believes masculinity is toxic then you have your definition of masculine man wrong. Yes, there are men who abuse their power over women, children, work situations where they use rank or who they know with a rank to mess someone up they don't care for and there's plenty more, but do you honestly think of those men manly? Are do you think of them as basically being a _itch? Men own up to their mistakes, sometimes they try to make things right without giving a apology which is a flaw, and yes most have a harder time expressing themselves when it comes to emotional issues but that's not exactly toxic, that's needing to find a healthy balance. I just can't go around believing that what was designed to be my counterpart is so deeply flawed. I still want a manly man for myself. It's fine if other women can be happy with someone overly sensitive, but I will tell you this, I've never met a alpha male who could look at a woman he care for and see disappointment and not strive to make better decisions. The ying and yang is there for a reason. It's true, we women are getting toxic too.

@@0mgskillz96 all the leftists who go to therapy don't even try fixing themselves, they just want someone to gush to. Men don't need therapy, men need to make their beliefs known and stand behind them. Your feelings about being disrespected by your wife, or coworkers, or friends? You tell them to their faces and you demand a stop to it, and if they don't, you leave. Doesn't matter how painful it is or how much it'll shake up your life, you take shit from no one. That's what makes you a man, you do what few others are willing to.

Greetings from Norway and a big fan of Håkon jarl. I have a few questions regarding some of the info in the video: You mention that "a couple of thousand norwegians" defeated the combined christian forces of Otto 2 - How did you come up with this number? And is it possible to estimate the the numbers of Otto´s force? You also mention "a rading spree" by jarl Håkon in which he supposedly raided a long list of locations in europe - can you mention what source exactly supplies this info, i read the Heimskringla and it dont seem to tell of this "raiding spree" by Håkon. You also mention that Harald Bluetooth employed "saxons and soldiers of the roman empire" to fight the Norwegians at the battle of Hjörungavägr - can you cite the exact source for this also? You also mention that the norwgians "was greatly outnumbered" during aforementioned battle - can you cite the exact source for this informartion? Im a big fan of your channel and your videos regarding Viking history. Btw there is strong indication that the Uí Ímair held all of Scotland under tribute for 30-40 years - a feat even the romans couldnt match in their finest hour..

Thanks for this. Being born in Lade this vikings show is awful to see. It could have been so much more! The characters would make for an amazing drama. You ever been to Trondheim? If you ever go you should make a video when there. For those who have not:
Standing in the city square is the 18 meters tall statue of Olav Tryggvason who has a head at his feet symbolizing Kark, and from there looking North you can see the "Hammer of Lade" where all the Earls including Haakon lived and pretty much controlled the country.
If you turn right/East about 100 meters away you'll find the "newer" Maria-church built by Harald Hardrada. Walk a bit further and you can find the leftovers of the Olavs-church where St Olavs body was put the first night, and also the Klemens-church where his shrine was put for people to see. Later it was moved again. (I'll post a link to those sites below as they have recently been dug out and it's quite amazing to see.)
Turn right again/south and look about 200 meters away and you can't miss the massive Nidaros Cathedral which is of course the monument of St Olav, and where he is buried somewhere under the floor. Or is he? No one knows. But we hope so.
If you exit the church and cross the river you will pass the place where the Maria-Monastary used to be and that is the grave of Harald Hardrada. His monument is sadly gone with time. He deserves a new one, but might lose out in size to his brother :)
Oh and in the Nidaros Cathedral you will also find the tombs of Magnus the 2nd, Olav Kyrre, and Haakon Magnusson (Hardrada's sons and grandson. And of course St Olav's son Magnus The Good.
Olav Magnusson, Øystein Magnusson and Haakon Herdebrei who were all Kings after the famous guys also have their graves here.
All the stuff in the city is in ca 1km distance, and to lade there is another 2km. A lot of Viking history in a short space :)

When I first saw this I felt as if somebody would have casted Shaka Zulu with a white guy.
Completely out of place and out of historical reality.
My children at first tried to defend the casting, saying it is anyway fantasy until I made clear to them that the historical figure of Jarl Håkon really existed and that he was neither a woman, nor was he of color. Also that he was an important historical figure and then by explaining that through Shaka Zulu they understood and changed their point of view, agreeing that the casting was disrespectful to the Norwegian history and also towards the actress.
Next we will have Black George Washington, Indian Marco Polo, Chinese Siegfried, Arab Eric the Red, African Musashi, Japanese Alexander the Great, Nubian Spartan warriors, European looking Genghis Khan , and so on etc.
it has become a bad habit of Hollywood to cast historical personalities with a different gender and a different color. That is wrong on many levels.

The Viking Valhalla series reminds me entirely too much of Flash and Arrow. The first seasons were absolutely amazing! Historically inaccurate, yes, but still great. Then Ragnar died, and they moved to season 3 of Arrow and Flash, where it's obvious they're trying to stretch it out but you're still invested enough in the remaining characters. Now Vikings Valhalla comes out, and its like the offshoot with Atom and White Canary (was it Legends?).
They went from grizzly, dark period drama to...I don't even know. They neutered the term "Vikings" and castrated the show. They went beyond Game of Thronesing it and full on CWd it.
