- The Fairey Battle was conceived during a peace process and born during the turbulence times before war. In its youth, it fought and did its best and thern settled in to a successful second career. We can all hope for as much... / worldofwarbirds
We named most of our bombers after places. The Fairey Battle was named after Battle Abbey, which is on the battlefield of the Battle of Hastings.
Yep Lancaster, Stirling, Sunderland etc etc would make a great map ;-)
@lt8395 spanning the entire globe from Dakota to Canberra via the UK.
You learn something everyday.I always assumed it was named ,not that I'd thought about it much,on its ability to do battle although it didn't do battle very well!
Nice podcast on a very unlucky plane.
Not to be forgotten, the crews of dozen or so Belgian battles who were sacrificed in a futile attack of the German columns advancing across the Albert canal.
Some of the aircraft were destroyed on the ground, the same day the war started, and the remaining handful was sent to bomb the advancing Germans. For the record, these plane were not even equipped with a bomb sight!

This may be the most boring video I’ve ever seen
I would agree. But it's not a video, it's a podcast audio episode.
Thanks for posting.
