- Hi all,
Simon Miller has sent me a couple of books to review,
Celtic Fringe which is an add on to the To the Strongest Rules covering Units and special rules for the Civil War in Scotland and Ireland.
The second book covers the Marquis of Montrose and his Campaigns in Scotland in the mid 1640s. Designed for TTS it's also useful for other rule sets.
Both books are really well produced and easy to use.
bigredbatshop....
Many thanks
Regards Ken

As I'm one of the authors of these two publications just wanted to thank you for your very complementary review. Simon and his production team have done an outstanding job and we are very pleased with the how the two books have turned out. Looks like your point about numbers of men has already been addressed and we'll take onboard your wish for a more comprehensive index. I'm glad you find the "wargaming" map style so useful.
While we have written these for Simon and Andrew's "For King and Parliament" ruleset, which are certainly our rules of choice for the period, the scenarios and rule extensions can be adapted to other rulesets fairly easily. I hope your army revamp project goes well and you are able to play some of our scenarios in due course.
I do visit your blog fairly regularly and find it very informative, and your podcasts are always full of useful gaming information 👍
Many thanks it's a great book 👍
The Celtic Fringe and For King & Parliament rules discuss the numbers of men in small, average and large units. This should assist in using the scenarios with different rule sets. As already noted, these books are for use with For King and Parliament (the ECW version of To the Strongest).
I think that's what I said Paul. I was trying not to put off people who don't use TTS and for me an inclusion of number of men would have broadened the scope of the book. It's a personal point in an overall very positive review.
@@YarkshireGamer We are in agreement, I was letting people know that if they want to know numbers of men they can be found in Celtic Fringe. For example, a small 1-hit unit of Scottish horse is 50-90 men, an average 2-hit unit is 100-150 men. Thanks for a great review.
Cheers, I don't want to distract too far from a great book as it's a personal thing. When I'm organising a game I vary the figure scale to get more on the table. So if I drop down to say 1 to 10 or lower 50 to 90 men could be the difference between a 5 or 10 figure unit which is significant with the rules that we use. I understand its primarily for TTS but was just making a suggestion that would widen the scope of the book 😁👍
Nice walkthrough, Ken 👍. These books are really nice. Good details and I really appreciate the suggested reading sections at the end of the books. I’ve been so convinced by the rules and adaptions to use with For King and Parliament (the ECW version of To The Strongest) that I’ve gone and ordered a bunch of cloths to which I can add grids so I can give them a proper try out 😀.
Good lad, have you got a game on at Salute ?
@@YarkshireGamer Not this year (I don’t paint fast enough! 😆). Should be at Partizan though supporting another Friend of General Haig and we’re doing a 10mm Aughrim 1691 game. 👍
A fine review Ken. Yet more temptation!
Pike Blocks and Gendarme mate, stay focused !
Thanks for the reviews, these look pretty cool, nicely set out and the colour photographs are a nice touch.
Lovely books 📚
They are great books I’m a big fan I play the rules in 10mm I like using Simon’s other campaign books as well
Nice one, I love the book set in the ECW will base our own campaign on it
Great review. I recall in the old Battle for Wargamers mag, Alford is pronounced Ar-fud by the locals. Showing my age.
I knew I'd get at least one wrong 😆
Great review. Looks like great books didn’t even know to the strongest was other periods other than ancients (sorry Simon) so that’s been interesting
He's taking over the world !
Greta review thanks. I used to play Forlorn Hope many years ago and am really keen to get back into them, have you ever done any battle reports using Forlorn Hope? If not perhaps a future video! Cheers
Cheers Jason, I'm hoping to do some ECW later in the the year
