  • "TTS" is an innovative set of ancients rules that utilises a grid system for movement. It has a sister set, "For King and Parliament" that covers the mid 17th century. Both sets use an excellent card-based activation and combat system that brings some real depth into play!

Recently I saw round one of the big Yarkshire Gamer poll that's going on and I saw this game which I knew nothing about. I was looking on UA-cam for some info and was delighted to see you had a review. This game sounds like fun and I am going to buy it and give it a go. Thanks for another great review and your insight.

I actually REALLY like this game. It plays well, and the turn/action system has some great gamesmanship in it. you can foil your own plans by pushing things too far. But on the other hand - mighty rides to glory can happen!
I'd love to see a version of this for 18th century linear warfare.

Thanks for the video. Question: Would i need the "To the Strong" rules and "For the King and Parliament" rules to play "For the King and Parliament"

    • @LaceandSteelchannel
      @LaceandSteelchannel  2 роки тому +1

For the King and Parliament' is a fully self-contained game. So it doesn't require "TTS" to play.

My favourite video game of all time is Crusader Kings II. The combat system in that would be fantastic to convert to a board or miniature game, in CK2 the actual effect of all of its combat rules tends to get lost since most players don’t know that they exist.
Combat consists of lining up opposing armies in the three classical wings. In CK2 when you raise an army you actually get a collection of individual forces representing each individual retinue and each town’s levy, plus three wings for each mercenary and Holy Order. The game will auto balance your commands for you, but it is often better to manually specify this before the battle starts, eg by placing all the cavalry on the flanks, all Heavy Infantry in the centre etc.
Battle has three phases - Skirmish, Battle and Pursuit. Each battle round a die is effectively rolled for each command to determine its tactic, every single one has a very low chance of use but as and when certain conditions are met they suddenly spring to the fore. For example, there might be 20 Skirmish tactics (I haven’t actually counted them all) but the most likely ones are “Continue to Skirmish” and “Charge into Battle”. If the commander is aggressive then the “Charge into Battle” option might suddenly increase tenfold, similarly if he is Welsh or English and is commanding longbowmen (ie that wing has say 50% or more Longbows) then the chance of “Massed Volley” would go up drastically.
Each commander also has a Military rating which is taken from all of his traits, so a Wroth, Genius, Shrewd but Craven commander might have a very good Military rating of say 21 (reduced slightly due to the Craven). The high skill would make good tactics more likely, eg Feint, Volley and Charge etc, but the Craven trait would increase the chance of a bad tactic, eg Hold, Withdraw etc.
As I said, the effect in game is minimal because until you know all of the various bonuses and tactics you generally just pile mass against mass and make sure that you have a high skill leader and all commands roughly equal. Much later when you are running retinues and mercenary companies of single unit types knowing the tactics and their triggers can make all the difference.
This could all be easily ported to a card style system where cards are added to a deck for each general as and when their skills, traits and unit compositions allowed for it. It would be fun creating the deck for each general before the battle - do I add an extra Volley card even though I only have 3 Archer units or should I instead add a Shieldwall card for my 4 Heavy Infantry ?
PS - The rules look very interesting, I think I will pick myself up a copy.

I'm doing a miniatures game for a British publisher at the moment that is based on Sengoku period Japan. So you devise your "ryu" or schol of combat by taking numbers in various Japanese elements - fire, wood, wind, metal etc. Thos all translate to tactics than can be used in combat.it seems to be working well so far!

As I get older the drama of card flipping for results and the cleanliness of gridded wargaming appeals to me more and more. I loved TtS! and just embarked on a rebasing project for the Warhammer variant "M2: Might & Monsters" hoping my orks get to see the tabletop again.

ooh - I haven't seen might and monsters - I'll go look itup. I could do with a fun set of fantasy rule.
      I'm enjoying grids and cards!

Well said, best set of rules ever, my friends and I now only play grid thanks to my Miller. And the best part of all we actually enjoy our games again, why no bs arguments from measuring!!!!!!

I created a grid base set of ancients rules back in the 90's that local club folk would play. Grids solve so may problems!

Oh, yes, the DBM comments strike a chord. Precise positioning to the millimetre, with special metal tools to ensure you were one base width plus a hair behind the front line, otherwise the "Buttocks of Death" got you when the front unit recoiled. What real world aspect of generalship was that recreating?

God. What a nightmare! (i love that term "buttocks of death", BTW!)
I'm going to have to review that game eventually....
