She is just giving everything. At times in media it feels like they try to make women more like men because in people's eyes women can only be badass if they dress like men and act like men. While Bayonetta is full of female power imagery. Like the moon for example, symbolizes femineity and the crescent moon represents woman power.
As well as the religious imagery. She uses her body and sexuality against angels and religious ideals as a whole as being explicit with sexualising their bodies is heavily frowned upon for women. She doesn't give a shit about that and has fun. When she fights she is always smiling, dancing, pole dancing, using angels as a surf board on lava and even surfing up to Fimbleventre.
Also, on the sexualising bit on Bayonetta. It doesn't seem like she does it for anyone but her own enjoyment and that is such a slay. When I first played Bayonetta when I was 13 I wanted to be her. I wanted her confidence and sharp wit, as well as the ability to do what she does while wearing heels.
I know it seems like I am going on and on but I just love this character. When women wear heels in movies it's always a slay but they literally made her heels a weapon that is a core feature to her and I love that.
Just need to mention that the concept designs for Bayonetta are so good and I feel robbed that they weren't added in the game anyway.

Bayonetta's sexuality is what she defines it as. she can be with whoever she wants. saying that a queer character is automatically no longer queer if they're in a heterosexual relationship is bisexual and pansexual erasure.
also, it's wrong to assume she's just for the male gaze and is oversexualized. Bayonetta clearly owns her sexuality. she knows she is hot and walks with such sheer confidence, she uses her body to taunt her enemies and isn't afraid to get partially or fully naked in front of them. she's powerful and owns it.

You make some good points, and I would like to politely push back a bit. Bayonetta 3 is a multiverse game, yet there is not *one* universe where Bayonetta is in an explicit queer relationship. The only relationship we see her in is a heterosexual one. In real life, yes, never assume that a person is straight just because they're in a heterosexual relationship. 100%. In fiction, however, the writer has to *show* queerness. Implying that a character in a het pairing could technically still be queer without any representation is like trying to have your cake and eat it, too. I find it insulting and argue that we deserve better.
To be clear, I say this as someone who is a huge Bayonetta fan, and as a man married to a bisexual woman. Bi-erasure sucks. This simply reeks more of cowardice to me.

Real talk: I'm personally convinced that Bayonetta 3's narrative was partially in response to Cereza becoming a queer gaming icon. Major spoilers for Bayonetta 3 below.
-Cereza and Jeanne hardly interact (The Egypt part was different, and was pretty cool)
-80% of the camp is gone; Cereza is way more serious
-Not only is Cereza in love with Luka, they have a child
-Cereza straight up "dies" and gets replaced with Viola
It feels as though some higher ups saw the community's valid queering of Cereza, wanted to ensure that she was straight, and had Viola become the new "Bayonetta" to avoid past queer connotations.
    That's just my tinfoil-hat conspiracy, though. 🤷

I think you're 100% right. It's obvious that Bayonetta 2 solidified the character as a queer icon in many ways and I think Platinum wanted to walk that back a little in the next installment to make her more universal and rein in fandom. They'll never admit to this, of course, but it's obvious to anyone who enjoys Bayonetta's queer aesthetic that it was a massive "course correction".
Just take a look at Jeanne, for example. The character NEVER showed interest in men and now all of a sudden she's flirting with Sigurd? That alone feels out of character for her. And the whole "Bayonetta wanting to kiss Luka" scene was also pretty ridiculous given their interactions in the past. Both of those in addition to the things you listed make it abundantly clear that they were "taking their character back".

    • @saxmanmel
      @saxmanmel 2 місяці тому +1

@@legendaresn6983 I wouldn't call that mutual flirting, personally. Luka definitely ogles Bayonetta a lot, but, to me, it never felt that she was genuinely interested in him. Honestly, you could make the case that she flirted more with Rodin and the boss angels than with Luka.
And then there's Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta and Luka barely even interacted in that game. You also have Loki's line when seeing Luka, "Hey, you're that pervert that's always staring at Bayonetta's tits! You really need to learn how to talk to a lady!" I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem like a glowing endorsement of Bayo x Luka to me.
Look, Cereza can be straight. Cereza can be bi. A lot of fans simply wanted it to make sense, to feel right. Sure, that was the case for some fans, but not for a lot of us.

Lemme give you a TL;DR: Quit being an ignorant twat and actually try to understand something for once.
Nigga, nobody rewriting anything. Interpreting media is part of the enjoyment of it, it's just that when you have the hyper-campy flamboyant humorous sexuality Bayo of 1 and 2 it sets up an expectation for the character. Does this mean she's necessarily queer? No. Anybody who does think so is a fool. What this does mean is that creating a third game that's a sanitized, poorly written, nasty copycat of what could have been an amazing sequel is going to leave dissatisfaction. Especially with a forced romance with a character who's barely around and gets little to no actual shown development in said third game.
Bayo is not a queer icon because she can be read as queer, Bayo is a queer icon because she represents herself in a way that resonates with queer people, especially given how empowering and dominating she presents herself. It's like the same thing as when a dark-skinned character is considered "black" by black people only for their skin tone to be lightened significantly in following seasons, of course people are gonna grumble about it a bit. The major difference being that lightening the skin tone of a character to make them not seem black doesn't subsequently result in major character assassination.

To those objecting to disapopintment with Bayonetta's pairing off with Luka on the basis of bisexual erasure, this what tiktaalic on tumblr helpfully describes as a "Smith College Problem".
    To wit:
Problem: when a character gets a love interest of another sex people complain because they headcanoned them as queer and now they’re confirmed straight. This is an erasure of bisexuality becuase you can date other sexes and still be same sex attracted because you’re bisexual.
Answer: you are having a Smith College Problem. You’re not critiquing reactions to a student film festival. You’re critiquing reactions to very main stream media funded by corporations who want to make money at all costs. This corporation is not trying to give you nuanced bisexual representation. This corporation is cutting gay readings off at the knee because when it did the coin flip on whether or not pink dollars are worth it the answer was no.
