    Again, many thanks for this.
With the advent of Brexit, as a English trained legal professional and want to enjoy as well as utilise Freedom of Movement, I am contemplating qualifying for law practice in Eire as advocate/ barrister in the next couple of years.

My senior council in recent settlement talks at the law society, said, "it's my job to see everybody comes away with something and the estate isn't wasted in a costly and timely court case". My understanding is; it is the professional obligation for all barristers to seek the best result, financial and otherwise, for their client. In short I would say my highly respected, "senior" senior council is playing God! It was almost as if my council was on the defendents team! It put me in an impossible situation, nobody enters a dispute with their own council during settlement talks. I would deeply appreciate your thoughts on this, I'm an Irish man living abroad, but this was my second time dealing with Irish barristers and the latter was even worse!

without knowing the ins and outs of your case, a legal professional owes a duty of care to their client and should take their instruction especially when it comes to settlement. if they are unable to act for you i.e. they see a conflict (e.g. ethically or with the other side for example) they should remove themselves from the case, end of. that being said, of course, they are in it for the money and have to live (like us all), so sometimes ethics go out the window. if you feel you have not been adequately advised, I would advise you take your grievance to the LSRA for further investigation.

@@LawHero Thank you for your swift response. I have only provided limited details, for various and obvious reasons, but your limited response equally addresses my question with a degree of clarity, that might actually be less clear, had more information been provided. My case has not reached 'completion' as yet, but my issues with my 'legal team' will be highlighted at the appropriate debriefing stages. I would have little capacity or energy to take the matter up with the LSRA even though I do think I may have a valid complaint. I would say there is way too much 'old boy' and 'old school' thinking, and action, in the Law Society, but I remain confident that the younger generation of Irish 'legals' will slowly erode such behaviours. I remain a cynical optimist and thank you again, your shared thoughts are of considerable help. Keep up the good work.
