People like to think they've earned their success, it makes them feel good about themselves and important, and protects their self-esteem. They don't want to admit they were successful mostly because of luck, connections, where and who they were born to, and that someone is more deserving than them but just was less fortunate in life. The World should strive to be a meritocracy which would make it much more productive, and benefit us all in the long run collectively.
