Glad to find this video. Got the Sony replacement pads but had no instructions about how to put them on. But, boy, I had a tougher time getting the new ones on than you did. It just took some gentle patience. And my original pads sure didn't last 15 years!! It was only about 3 years before the plastic covering started peeling and leaving black flakes on my ears.
Flakes: my original pads started flaking, so I put some black socks over them to keep the flakes from getting everywhere. It looked like I had dog ears! After it stopped flaking into the socks, I removed the socks, and continued wearing them for another 10 years or more! They finally got uncomfortable enough that I replaced them
Thank you, just restored my 7506 to brand new glory. I remember my headphones wore off in like two years the first time, but to be fair, it was hot, I sweat a lot and I was doing 9-12 hours days at a time. That was amazingly 20 years ago. Thank you Sony for making a quality product.
Great vid, great cans - love those big comfy velour pads. My dog chewed up the those exposed leads when she was a pup. I was very upset but they still worked - and STILL work years later with no repair beyond a bit of silicone and discarded insulation to cover the exposed wiring and strengthen the leads. Talk about rugged!
thanks for the info. i bought my MDR's last September before i went to Europe for 3 weeks, I wanted to see how they would hold up under normal everyday use. I am a mobile musician/dj so I use headphones constantly. I noticed about 3 weeks ago, the ear cups started to show major failure in separation of the inner foam / outer covering. Interesting that my Shure SRH 440's ,which I purchased at the same time, are still going strong with no issues. I love the Sony's, just need to attend to the upkeep from time to time. That's normal and it is what it is. They still sound fantastic!
Thanks for this. I've had my V6's for a little over a year and they've made me the happiest man in the world. Both pads started to rip a couple weeks ago and I had no idea if or how you would replace them. I must have sharp ears or something. Nice video.
I find that an easier way to replace headphone pads is to fit the pad around the entire earpiece and then pull the stretchy end down so that it fits into the groove. It will tend to "snap" into the groove.
Bought Senal SMH-1000 that comes with a free Auray genuine sheepskin ear pads/pouch and have to say am quite impressed by the sound of the Senal ( MDR7506 look-a-like but with detachable cables which there are 2 standard in the box ) and also extra ear pads which I tried and switched with my Sony CD900ST's. The Aurays are the perfect replacement for V6, 7506, CD900ST, old version of ATH-M30, SMH-1000. Same thickness as Sony OEM but a definite step-up in comfort and durability.
Glad I found this (both the video and the reply). My left MDR ear-pad came off a year ago. I got so frustrated trying to reattach it that I would just place the ear-pad over my ear and clamp the headphone over it (if that makes sense - and bootleg I know. I basically always had a loose pad but it worked!). So between this video and the "card trick" I got it back in place. The foam is showing in both pads, so I probably need replacements but at least now I have everything in place. Thanks!
Wow you take very good care of your headphones! My pads are all torn up after 2 years :P I'll be trying the pearstones, thanks a lot for your suggestion and demonstration.
I enjoy your vids. I have been a subscriber for a few months already (your Audioengine D1 review helped me make my decision, thanks again for that) and happened to come across this vid when searching to replace a pad that had come off. She was very appreciative.
Thank you, I was afraid of ripping the replacement pads for our V600, your pointing out that they are strong helped me to fix up with new pads! The old pads were flaking off black material that resembles flake fish food //
@@Luisitox5 They do. They increase bass and make it boom and also make the sound less bright. This is good for casual listening but bad for mixing. I had to go back to the flaky originals.
Great Video! Thanks! BTW I have the MDR-V600 and Sony discontinued selling the replacement pads. Also the Pearstone Replacement Earpads are currently unavailable. Is there any other OEM brand that you can recommend?
SO I fixed my headphones a while ago and I had the problem of putting the ear pads back on it was a bit harder to do when your headset is rounded. I found a trick to make it easier to put back on and it looks like it never was removed. All you need is a card any type of hard plastic card like credit card or those phone card. simply do the same process as in this video but instead of using your fingers to insert it through the slots use the card to push it back in.
It seems that the Velour type has a smaller inside "diameter" than the original. The original itself is uncomfortable for an over ear cans due to its smaller size than most over ear headphone pads. So, are you still using the Velour type? Thanks!
I've got a pair of MDRV-600s. Haven't used em in a while so when I did I noticed all these black flakes. Black dandruff?! Close exam showed pad surface disintegrating. How do I get these off I thought. Then a search brought your video. Thank You Thank You. Welcome tutorial. I ordered replacements from Amazon. When I worked in radio the pads were pure bakelite. Ouch! Thanks again. You've got a new subscriber.
I have Sony MDR-CD999 and they have a plastic snap ring inside original pads. Some snaps broke after I removed pads. Do I need them at all? Original Sony pads replacement nowhere to be found. I got Brainwavz for the one you have. Any suggestions?
When I replaced my V6's ear pads I also had to remove the sticky circle of cloth around the driver because it was half un-glued, and shaking a lot, making an unbearable sound while bass reproduction. Sadly the new ear pads didn't come with the sticky cloth thing... but I don't thing is a big deal sound-wise.
I have one pair with original Sony ear pads, and one pair with aftermarket memory foam pads from Brainwavz. The larger/thicker memory foam pads do alter the sound just a little but a notch or two up on the volume fixes that.
It's tricky for sure. If you've ever changed a bicycle tire using a "spoon" it's something like that. I fashioned one from a piece of smooth plastic. BE VERY CAREFUL not to stretch them out too far.
I would! Especially if you are using it witha low power output device. That being Android handsets, Ipods, Iphones, Even tablets. Depending on the model you even might get some physical EQ options.
I got the MDR-V600 from 2001 and they are still the best headphones I ever purchased; going to get some new pads though; Sony > All (when it comes to over the head earphones)
How bad I wanted for my 7506 to be MADE IN JAPAN... by the way, the velour just look so awesome on it... maybe late spring I'm going to get them. Very nice video, man.
Thanks for the video man! I got V6s cause I heard you could replace the pads fairly easily if they ever one day ripped (which mine are doing). Time to buy some replacement pads.
Thanks for this vid, I've had my 7506's for I think almost 5 years now and the ear pads are so degraded that they make my ears itch and they flake all over the place. Seriously need to do a replacement. I'm thinking that I need to replace the right driver too as it's somewhat quieter and will crackle sometimes.
i bought the auray audio pads for my 7506's and so far so good... the pads are a nice velvet and they fit good, seem better than the pearstone but not sure
Hey, can you tell me why the 7506s are more expensive than the v6s? I was trying to work out the difference, and the only one i could find is that the v6s have more frequency response, should that not make them the more expensive ones? i also read the warranty on the v6s is shorter so maybe that could be it...
Originals 7506 became pieces after time, imitation i got from ebay became the same (both were this soft leather). Senheisers HD280 pads are intact years now, Sony V700 the same (is hard leather). Anyone has to suggest a good solid ones for 7506?
here i need some help i hv a sony dynamic stereo headphone DR-S100 (BOODO KHAN) is quite old model can i still find a ear pad for it because is already crack and i need to fix it.thanks :)
+GEMain I Know it's not that easy , you have to apply a little pressure to the back opening of the pad , it fits on the groves of the headphones , just dont apply too much pressure as you may tear the back of the ear pads , try fitting from one point and then apply pressure evenly as you go round . Hope that helps
Can you do that with the Wireless Stereo Headset *You know the one who appears to not have any other name and are much fatter, also official* because my cushions pads suddenly became really uncomfortable and I'm thinking I need a replacement.
my ear pads on my MDR 7506 did not last long at all. after two years or so the outer coating started flaking off. its a bit pathetic the sony used such cheap material on a so called "professional" headphones. not impressed

great video, thank you, I'm about to replace mine this week. just one thing though, can you please not ramble on so much. your video was really good, you just ramble on and take to look to get to the point, no disrespect. God bless.
Glad to find this video. Got the Sony replacement pads but had no instructions about how to put them on. But, boy, I had a tougher time getting the new ones on than you did. Thanks for the info. Man, Sony makes a good pair of headphones -- I've owned my V6s for 24 years and after replacing the pads they're good as new.

Thanks a lot ! I got replacement pads today for my old phones (MDR-7506), followed the video instructions here, and I'm a happy camper.

i'm now listening with my new pads, what a relief. thank you sir.
the old ones were flattened and it was hurting my ears

Just installed the beyerdynamic 250 on my MDRv6. They work great! Thanks for the tips on how to replace them.
I enjoy your vids. I have been a subscriber for a few months already (your Audioengine D1 review helped me make my decision, thanks again for that) and happened to come across this vid when searching to replace a pad that had come off. She was very appreciative.
Between the Beyerdynamic, Aubray, and Pearstone velour pads which one would be the best in terms of quality and if the pad affects the sound quality?
Thank you, I was afraid of ripping the replacement pads for our V600, your pointing out that they are strong helped me to fix up with new pads! The old pads were flaking off black material that resembles flake fish food //
Ahh... had no idea it was stretchy! Afraid it would tear but followed this and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
Looking art this I'm glad I got the Beyer velour pads - they 'stretchy' part fits better than these by far.
do they change the sound signatura of the 7506?
@@Luisitox5 They do. They increase bass and make it boom and also make the sound less bright. This is good for casual listening but bad for mixing. I had to go back to the flaky originals.
Thanks! Had the pads replaced on my MDR-V6 just as your video ended. Good job man!
Great Video! Thanks! BTW I have the MDR-V600 and Sony discontinued selling the replacement pads. Also the Pearstone Replacement Earpads are currently unavailable. Is there any other OEM brand that you can recommend?

Love your growling FX
Thanks! I'm back in business again after my original pads were leaving black flakes on my head and ears.
Exactly my situation. Love my MDR-V6's, and now I'm off to replace my shedding ear pads.
It seems that the Velour type has a smaller inside "diameter" than the original. The original itself is uncomfortable for an over ear cans due to its smaller size than most over ear headphone pads. So, are you still using the Velour type? Thanks!

Thank you. This video gave me the confidence to change out my ear pads. Worked like a charm. Great going!
Happy to hear the video helped you. Thank you for watching. :)
Just wondering, was there a sound difference between the Sony factory ear pads and the Pearstone velour ear pads?
I have Sony MDR-CD999 and they have a plastic snap ring inside original pads. Some snaps broke after I removed pads. Do I need them at all? Original Sony pads replacement nowhere to be found. I got Brainwavz for the one you have. Any suggestions?
I just bought the MDR-V6 and the Beyerdynamic Velour replacements
Best $88 I ever spent
My original plastic leather earpads have broken now after about 10 months of use, they've got maybe 400 hours on them at the most if even that.
Same
When I replaced my V6's ear pads I also had to remove the sticky circle of cloth around the driver because it was half un-glued, and shaking a lot, making an unbearable sound while bass reproduction. Sadly the new ear pads didn't come with the sticky cloth thing... but I don't thing is a big deal sound-wise.

The replacements look like on ear as opposed to over the ear pads. This will effect the sound slightly
I got the MDR-V600 from 2001 and they are still the best headphones I ever purchased; going to get some new pads though;
Sony > All (when it comes to over the head earphones)
Thanks a bunch! Very informative. Now if only Sony still made the replacement earpads for the MDR-V600....just aftermarket stuff available now.
How bad I wanted for my 7506 to be MADE IN JAPAN... by the way, the velour just look so awesome on it... maybe late spring I'm going to get them.
Very nice video, man.
What's a good way to take care of the pads? I haven't had mine nearly as long as yours and they've already started flakeing off.
Have you tried the Beyerdynamic ear pads that also fit the Sony MDR-V6? Looks like it might be more comfortable.
Can you get bigger pads? The default pads on mine come in contact with my ears and press them against my head.
i was wondering this aswell, i want to buy these headphones but the pads just look a little to small
Thanks. I was worried I was gonna rip the material because I had to stretch them so damn much to get them on.
What do you think is better in sound quality the sony mdr zx500 or the sony mdr 7506
i bought the auray audio pads for my 7506's and so far so good... the pads are a nice velvet and they fit good, seem better than the pearstone but not sure
Hey, can you tell me why the 7506s are more expensive than the v6s? I was trying to work out the difference, and the only one i could find is that the v6s have more frequency response, should that not make them the more expensive ones? i also read the warranty on the v6s is shorter so maybe that could be it...
Great video! Very helpful! Looking to replace the pads in my v600 - which appear very similar to these.
Great video, thanks for showing how to replace the pads.
hope it helped you. :)
i bought mine in 2001 and they still work perfectly i just had to replace the earpad ONCE !!!!!!!
Would you recommend an amp for the v6? I'm thinking of buying a fiio e6 just to boost the quality a bit.
What is the name of the velour ones you mentioned, Purestone?
hmm, finger band aid: did your blade bite the hand (or finger) that feeds it?
Thank you for this tutorial! I just fixed my ear pads with no problem. 2 thumbs up!
I just bought after market from ebay and installed it. Yessssssssssss! it is great tutorial. Thanks a lot !
I tried some Pearstone ones from B&H (ship to Canada yay) and they were exceptionally uncomfortable so I binned them. Now Ive gone with the Beyers.
i cant find the review on it? did you make a conclusion?
if you treat these well they last for a long time, and will look great with my new pads. Thanks for the video
Great video, easy way of explaining, just great!
Hey, are there any good techniques for preventing them from cracking in the 1st place?
in terms of sound whats the difference between v6 and 7506 because their price difference is not very big at all..
Thank You for posting! Will help me get mine changed.
hello, where can i get headphone ear pad cushsion things? i have sony mdr v55 and i want to buy some new spare.. where can i get them?? thanks :)
Originals 7506 became pieces after time, imitation i got from ebay became the same (both were this soft leather). Senheisers HD280 pads are intact years now, Sony V700 the same (is hard leather). Anyone has to suggest a good solid ones for 7506?
here i need some help
i hv a sony dynamic stereo headphone DR-S100 (BOODO KHAN)
is quite old model
can i still find a ear pad for it
because is already crack and i need to fix it.thanks :)
Where can I buy replacement pads locally?
Beyerdynamic also makes ear pads that work with the v-6 and 7506 headphones.
i'll have to get some new ones. I have used mine almost daily for about 4 years or so. They are starting to get a little cracked.
I believe, in addition to a better warranty, they have a gold-plated jack.
thanks ! it helped , my Sony MDR XB950BT right ear pad came off almost same like this .
:)
+G4dG3tZfR34K HOWWWW, this thing is driving me insane
+GEMain I Know it's not that easy , you have to apply a little pressure to the back opening of the pad , it fits on the groves of the headphones , just dont apply too much pressure as you may tear the back of the ear pads , try fitting from one point and then apply pressure evenly as you go round . G4dG3tZfR34K OMG after hours of trying finally got them back on! Thanks man
sony mdr 7506 or sennheiser hd 380? who has the great sound? please answer
I have both. I think the sennheisers sound better, but the sonys fold up better and are a little more portable. Both are good pairs though.
I'd like to see a review of the V6.
but amazon sells V6 for $88 and 7506 for $79. Should I go for 7506?
Is this the same for sony mdr zx500
Does the earpads from the m50's fit on these?
does anyone know how to get thinner pads for the Sony xb950bt headphones.
Can you do that with the Wireless Stereo Headset *You know the one who appears to not have any other name and are much fatter, also official* because my cushions pads suddenly became really uncomfortable and I'm thinking I need a replacement.
Compatible Sony mdr-zx500 ( 9.5 X 6 X 1.5 cm) mdr-zx500???
your ear pads wear out after 15 years! my V6's pads didn't last 6 months.
is this possible on the sony mdr v55 to??
Is there any headphone under $200 thats better than the M50?
For 6 dollars? The headphones or the earpads?
which are better v6 or 7506??? please help respond

great advice, thanks!
Thanks a lot man! Nice video!
HOW TO REPAIR THE END OF THE CORD THAT I JUST BROKE..?
Thank you that was super helpful!
Anyone know how to clean these pads?
Mine did not even last a year. Factory pads got tattered due to moist throw my ears
Same... sucks living in such humid conditions :x
Keep going man. I like your videos!
I can't seem to find any good ear pad replacements anyone wanna redirect me to some pads that are like his B&H doesn't have his anymore.
anyone got an idea how to get xb600 or 900 pads off?
Thank you so muuuuch my headphones are now even better than newwww
Sony MDR zx500 pads fit for zx700 and vice versa
my ear pads on my MDR 7506 did not last long at all. after two years or so the outer coating started flaking off. its a bit pathetic the sony used such cheap material on a so called "professional" headphones. not impressed
Indeed!!!!
We have replaced them multiple times and the plastic skin flakes off in short order!
A blatant material defect that Sony responds to with their usual oblivious indifference.
toats mcgoats
Mine lasted a good 12 years of moderate use before flaking. Hopefully the Auray replacements will last at least as long.
They were probably knockoffs.
I've been buying these headphones for years, since I'm in radio and almost everyone in radio uses them. HOWEVER, I was SOOO disappointed to learn recently that a large percentage of the Sony MDR V6 and 7506s are KNOCKOFFS! If you get them for less than $99.00 and not from a trusted reseller, they are probably not authentic, won't sound as good, and (most importantly) wear out much more quickly. I'm so mad ay myself for being a cheap-ass and buying them on ebay. Lesson learned. My knockoffs have shorted out, pads are shot, and don't sound as good as my originals. Oh well.
HOWEVER, now this gives me the opportunity to try the Audio Technica M50s, which lots of radio people are switching to, and they look better ... especially in WHITE. I just wish there was a store I could go to in Atlanta where I could listen to all the top headphones side by side and make a comparison with my own ears.
I bought it from Streamline Audio Video on amazon. aside from the ear pads the headphones are fine . if they are knock offs it had me fooled for several years.
great video, thank you, I'm about to replace mine this week. just one thing though, can you please not ramble on so much. your video was really good, you just ramble on and take to look to get to the point, no disrespect. God bless.
THANKS BRO THIS HELPED ME PUT MY HEADPHONED BACK ON EARNED A SUB
thank you! I hope you like my other videos as well. :)
You know Sony assemblers must use a cute little tool. How many of you try this, and the pads never go on? No matter what?
actually I got my 7506s at Sam Ash, would pick up another in a heartbeat if these quit on me.
Thanks alot. Keep up the videos.
Helpful! Thanks!
