    The first idea to get started might be to use Rovers and explosives to knock down hills on the lunar poles that block sunlight. While building up the high point you want to put your solar power tower(s). By removing shadowed areas means you can get continuous sunlight for solar power.

    Go to the highest spot on the Moon (it's at 5.41°S - 201.37°). Build a tower 1 Km tall (easy in the low gravity). Build another on the opposite side, one at each pole, maybe few more for good measure (some will be nearly 20 Km tall). A dozen will do, since they mainly act in tension to hold the roof in place. Ah yes, the roof...
    Now roof the whole Moon over with a geodesic globe. Install three-metre thick panes of glass or sapphire. Fill with air, water, plants, animals, people. Enjoy.
    Now you're shielded from radiation, and your atmosphere won't float away. Most of the time the roof wouldn't be visible.

    I wonder why everyone is so obsessed with the impractical atmosphere. What is wrong with a surface covered with lots of domes and cities, that go deep. Far more practical and resilient. And no significant difference regarding life quality, if done right. I also assume as technology progresses, life support systems etc. will become more and more irrelevant since interstellar travel is impractical anyway when it comes to using human bodies.
    Very likely that planets that have much energy storage and are as cold as possible become more attractive since they can cool down computers to the maximum. Something that is often forgotten in science fiction is that funnily, one of the biggest challenges is cooling systems with a high energy output - like massive computers.

    The following will be hypothetical or at worst science fiction.
    Most of the terraforming will happen in the huge caverns, referred to as lava tubes. Most of the habitable areas will be in these caverns. The habitable depth will likely be limited to the heat radiating from its core...(around 2, 500 degrees F.) Liquid water and gases like nitrogen and helium, might be available and may actually contribute a breathable atmosphere. Keep in mind that the radius of the Moon is over 1000 miles. So, even though the Moon has one sixth of the Earth's gravity that 700 to 800 miles of atmosphere adds up to some pretty good PSI. Depending on where you start adding up the amount of air stacked up above where you measure it will weigh proportional to one sixth of earth's 14.7 psi at sea level. On the Moon the same column of air might weigh 2.45 PSI. The International space station is located around 248 miles above the earth. If we try and make it proportional, 248 is divided into 700 miles and then multiply that number by 2.45 PSI, it looks like we would have a tiny bit less than 7 pounds per square foot. At 18,000 feet in altitude, the air pressure is around 7.3 PSI. Mount Everest Base Camp is at approximately 17,999 feet in elevation where the Sherpas get ready to climb the mountain. Mount Everest is around 29,000 feet. Of course, the colder air nearer the surface will make it weigh more but the warm air nearer the core will weigh less than the nearer to surface air. And, if you were to be able to go deeper, like down to 800 miles, providing the heat radiating from the core doesn't make things too hot. At 7.9 PSI on Earth the elevation may be a comfortable pressure for living conditions once your body adjusts its number of blood cells. Well, this all hinges on the caverns, (lava tubes,) extending to those depths, otherwise, a Tunnel-boring machine will be necessary.
    The water has been accumulating in these giant caverns for billions of years from comets and from the gases being expelled from the sun and other stars. Natural sunlight can be transferred via current technology like fiber-optics will give the sunlight necessary for gardens and parks. Inflatable habitats and materials like "Gunite or Shotcrete" can be manufactured for reinforcing structures that may be domelike structures like the ones here on Earth...only much larger. Large cylinders with axis on either end can be entered from the center where speed of the rotation will be much slower. Elevators and stairways will lead to the sleeping quarters, kitchens, bathrooms, entertainment and exercise areas will all be available in the artificial gravity caused by centripetal force provided by the rotation.

    Should we terraform the Moon because we can? The quick answer is NO, because we don’t know how terraforming the Earth’s Moon will affect Earth… We know that as the Moon orbits the Earth it affects the tides. Terraforming affects the climate of the planet or moon, and I fear that a change in mass or climate of the Moon will affect the Earth’s Tides???
    I don’t know how much mass we can add or remove from the Moon’s mass that will not affect the tides of the Earth. I hope NASA knows better. You do understand that the only reason the Earth has life is that the moon is hollo enough not to have the mass to do more than affect the tides. What we need to understand is how mining the Moon and removing the resources will affect the Earth. I have commented that what we mine from space should be used in space, along with what we mine from the Moon should be used on the Moon…
    I have no fears that using the Moon’s regolith in a 3D Printer to build a roof for a crater won’t change the Mass of the Moon. The main structures within the air-tight capped crater should be made from regolith so that the stuff we bring from Earth shouldn’t affect the Mass of the Moon too much. The Solar Fields that I’ve commented about being made on the Moon to power the orbiting habitats should be okay if the Solar Panels are made from the Moon if we can’t perfect Dimond Batteries.
    After watching, "Can We Terraform The Moon?"
    Curiosity tells us a lot in the short video about the benefits of Terraforming the Moon, but nothing about the catastrophe of a 20-foot higher tide or even if the seas go flat. That might be a bit too Sci-Fi for some of you to imagine, but how would today’s world look to someone from 1000 years ago…
    The question, ‘Can We Terraform The Moon?‘ is not the right question…but should we? The short answer is, “Not if it changes the Earth’s Tides…” My past comments have focused on the needs that need to be addressed before sending humans to deep space. The other information shared in the video covers a lot of what I have commented about, so don’t forget to watch…

    Terraform the moon for proof of concept for Mars (although vastly different I know.)

  • @sziklamester1244
    @sziklamester1244 2 роки тому +1

    Terraforming would be beneficial but only if we did not mess up the Earth with it. Adding mass is not a silly idea but I imagine this on Mars. Mars is further away from us and if we can manage to add mass to the Mars without making unstable the orbit then we can make the gravity a bit closer to what we have now on Earth. On Moon I only can imagine some atmospheric alteration technique which stops the atoms from escaping or slowing down them by 90-95%. In this case we could maintain the created atmosphere for 100-500k years which is not a bad time and we can imagine the technology level will increase so it is still a good option.
    Venus is our best option by far because we basically needs to speed up the rotation, add magnetic field and keep the carbon in solid form. These things can be done in the next 100-500 year which is not a bad pace I assume. We simply not live long enough to see these steps started but I hope I will respawn in the future too. Who knows.

  • @pegefounder
    @pegefounder 2 роки тому +1

    Sure not. Much too low escape speed.
    An atmosphere is too short existing for objects below 8 km/sec escape speed.
    Situation can be improved with a strong artificial magnetic field.
    For this, it is usual to have big underground structures.
