I really like how you always give the creators of the plugins the credit they deserve. It's really nice seen how you promote their kofi and stuff. So many other YT creators basing their videos sorely in the plugin and always forget to give credit.
Thanks Daniel, I appreciate it! It's the least I could do for their tireless work and dedication. They deserve it! :)
It's good to see people (particularly influential UA-camrs like Sergio and Nicole) in contact with Marcus directly to help spread awareness of the Projects plugin, as well as providing him with feedback and enhancement requests to help improve the plugin. Projects is still in its early stages, but it's one of the most exciting Obsidian extensions.
I do hope that Marcus doesn't take too long to getting round to implementing a Timeline view (which is something he has said he wants to do). The existing Obsidian timeline plugin is just a restrictive single (vertical) line with points on it, and I want a proper full horizontal timeline that allows for *multiple* overlapping events each with clearly visible start/end points and durations (depicted by bar lengths, a bit like a Gantt chart) which dynamically resize in response to the viewing scale (hour, day, week, month, year). Basically I miss the old "Journal" from Microsoft's Outlook application (which was sadly scrapped by Microsoft). To this day I have found NOTHING that comes even close to replicating it's simple but incredibly useful, flexible, and powerful functionality. I hope Projects can one day fill that gap.
That's great to hear, thanks! And great feedback! :) I think projects has the potential to be a super plugin - big enough to have other plugins working alongside it. Super excited for it, thanks for the detailed feedback!
After comparing both "Projects" and "DB Folder", I think the main differences between them are:
- "Projects" works off a folder and doesn't need Dataview
- Opens with a Command (or Hotkey!)
- Change "Project" through a dropdown menu in the `Project Pane`
- Streamlined for "Content Creation" or other long-term projects
- Aggregates the YAML of the notes to produce different views of the "Project Folder"
- Can "sort ↕ asc/desc"
- "Database Folder" can be built on folders, tags, links, and queries and depends on Dataview to function.
- Opens the Database upon opening the note the database is contained in (The Database is a .md file)
- Also works with the YAML to produce a *dynamic table* - equipped with **Filters** and **Search**
- Moving the columns doesn't move the YAML (as it does on Projects)
- Offers different "property types" that can be worked with in various ways. (Formulas look intriguing!)
Do you think there's anything I missed here?
Pretty good summary! I'm actually making a video on that very topic. I make use of both, for certain types of note I prefer to just use a DB folder, while others like my youtube channel I like to have projects. Keep in mind, both of these plugins are being very actively developed, and new features are being pushed out on a weekly basis!
Great video, Sergio. I had watched a couple others a few days prior and have found yours to be the best so far, in part because you cover in it not just Projects but also how Projects works with the DB folder plug-in. I now plan on downloading and learning how to use both plug-ins-and I have you to blame for all the time I will spend organizing everything in my vault.
>and I have you to blame for all the time I will spend organizing everything in my vault.
Laughed out loud! Thanks for the kind words! It'll be worth the initial work :)
Super useful tutorial as usual. Thank you, Sergio! I'm starting a new season/direction on my channel and just used this to get organized. Thanks!
Hi David! I'm glad :) best of luck!
Another amazing plugin, great review 😀
Thanks JV :)

Thanks. Really clear and useful.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Loving it as well :)
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. YAAAAASSSSS!!!!
Awesome!
Excellent Sergio!
Thanks Bruno!
Thank you Sergio [and I've been thanking Marcus with coffees] - so many of us have been waiting, hoping that someone would generously create this functionality; and I can't wait for the amazing extensions that the community will now create! CAN I ASK A FAVOUR? Please could you make the circle with your face talking to camera smaller? Whilst I value you talking straight at me[/us] as you teach, it takes up so much of the screen that I have trouble orientating where you are jumping to on the background/Obsidian page. Very much appreciate all that you have taught me this year. I hope you keep pushing Obsidian to new limits and passing on your knowledge :-)
I actually really appreciate that feedback! I will definitely be keeping that in mind, and please always share any feedback, I'm all up for it, and it's super beneficial for me to improve! :)
Awesome, thank you for another great video.
Thanks David!
Thanks for sharing. We finally have a competior to Notion's Database, and a good one.
Glad it was helpful!
You have the best Obsidian tutorials/reviews on the Internet. I love your style of teaching.
I have one question: as I understand it, one of the great benefits of using Obsidian is the ability to connect disparate pieces of knowledge and finding serendipitous connections in the graph. But those connections only work for files not silo’d in folders. Is that correct?
If so, do your project files live outside of your PKM system?
Also, how does this work with maps of content?
Database folder and project plugin together are like Avengers assemble 😛
It really is!
thank for Marcus‘ hard work it must be tough . is he do the whole notion team work alone?
Awesome video Sergio, love how you give the plugin creators. Are you using a community theme in this video? I saw one of your past videos where you mentioned LYT Mode, have you switched?
Hi Alex, I've switched to the minimal theme since it came out earlier this year!
This is slicker than slick.
I'm coming from Notion and this was like the last feature I was waiting for before fully jumping to Obsidian. Might be a stupid question, do you think there will be any way to embed these views into a different page? To have a sort of "dashboard" look alongside other notes, instead of a standalone projects page. I really liked that aspect of Notion pages
Great video, thanks! I'm looking for a way to archive projects within the Projects plugin, but don't see a way to do this. Any suggestions on how to archive projects in Obsidian using the Projects and Database plugins as described in the video?
Great video and thanks for this! A bit of a side question - I'm curious what you're using for video editing and being able to put your face side to side to when you're showing us you're using Obsidian. Much appreciated!
Thank you! I use final cut pro!
Hey, Sergio!! Great work. This is, by far, the most simple and awesome video to explain Projects that I Found. How do I make the status like "tags" that you shown on the begining of the video (0:09)? Thanks a lot!!
Just hit after "status:" and add a new line like " - failed" or " - success" like you do with lists.
@FromSergio, Hi .. so for the date field, does it need to be in a certain format to be treated like a date field, cuz otherwise it's treating it as a text field
Thanks!
Thanks so much! Have a great one! :)
From Turkey Hi. Your channel is very useful. You have no idea whose lives you have touched in a positive way. Keep going bro.
Thanks so much for the kind words! It means a lot! :)
Is the database folder thing at 10:00 due to another plugin or was it in an older version of Projects?
This would be really cool to use, but unfortunately it doesn't recognise the due field as a date. I even tried renaming it to date but it still thinks it is a text field...
There doesn't seem to be any fix currently as changing data field type is supported yet, I'll have to revisit this in the future and hope it's fixed eventually. 🤞
Hi - is it possible to habve multiple due dates which depend on each other - lets say a relase date for a video and one week before a create video due date? So that one date is calculatet from the other?
I have a problem: the "due" date is not linked to a calendar. That means, if I click on the monthly calendar, Obsidian says: "Select a date field to create calendar events." That's really annoying and I don't find a solution. Can anyone help me out please?
Thanks Sergio for all theses information's, however, I have one question, how I can turn the status to a list of choice?
Hi Badr, I'm not sure I understand your question?
@@FromSergio When we have one attribute like Status for example with these choices: Ideas, Research, Writing... on yaml I have tried to declare it as a list (status: - Ideas - Research) but it's not working fine. at the moment the plugin can't work on iPad, i will wait for the bug correction to give it a real try :) Thanks for your reply
Awesome content as usual ! Only problem I have is my metadata is all inline, plugin doesn't seem to be able to read it ! (except for the db folder view)
Hi Yannick! just saw this. Projects supports inline queries (::) but you. need to parse them through dataview. Does that work? You can always suggest it as a feature request to Marcus on the repo :)
Is there any way to reorder the columns in table view?
Thanks for the great series of videos - they are really helpful. The Projects plug-in looks great. I believe that I followed you demo instructions, however, Projects is registering the “Due” column header as Text rather than a date. The date in the “Due” field is the same as the YAML header. I don’t what i’m doing wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks
I know exactly what you're referring to. First make sure that your date format is just like what you see me do on the video "YYYY-MM-DD" For the first couple of notes. Then close the projects window and reopen it, it should be good. I've mentioned this to Marcus, hopefully it's fixed soon
@@FromSergio Thanks very much for your feedback. I got it working so thanks. Please keep the videos rolling.
@@FromSergio Excellent thank you, this resolved the issue for me too.
Hey Sergio, unrelated to this particular video, however, if you’ve got time I was wondering if you could recommend a software/app similar to Todoist where you don’t have to pay for notifications?
Thank you.
A common way around that is to use a calendar service for the few events where you want a notification. If you absolutely need the reminders feature in a task manager app then I'm uncertain if there's a free way around it :/
Thanks Sergio for the video. I am trying to create a Project for songs that I learn on the guitar, and the metadata contains a link to the lesson of the song. Two things that I see are limited are: The link is not clickable in the table view. And instead of showing the whole URL, I would like to but cannot replace it with an alias. Thoughts?
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm confident that Marcus would appreciate it if you could place them in the repo, I'll pass them along to him in either case!
Database Folder view is quite buggy, sometimes the notes disappear.
Can you open your notes from board view? It doesn't work for me even with comand+click
Can somebody help me?
It works on my end, maybe someone else can chime in! Feel free to open an issue on the repo
Can you do one on migrating from Evernote if you haven’t yet?
I'm afraid I can't but I'm sure there are ways to do it, I just haven't looked into it as I left Evernote many years ago!
Is there a way to add a reoccurring events such as birthdays, christmas, holloween, etc... I think it would cool to add them once then it'll always tell you every year rather than you needing to type it every year or something. Lol XD
I use my calendar app for that :)
@@FromSergio Awesome. Sadly for me personally I like having it all in one place including those events. Lol XD
The Database Folder view is gone. What should I Do
Was it there before? If it wasn't, then you just need to install the db folder plugin, if it was, and it's not anymore it's likely you moved the db folder plugin file, so you need to re-sync it!
@@FromSergio O yeah, I did not had the db Folder plugin installed
Thanks for the solution
This plugin has never been helpful. All of its limitations make it unusable.
Out of interest, what limitations did you encounter?
You have a amazing personality!! YT ranking services - "Promosm" .
