HOW TO CREATE A TABLE OF AUTHORITIES AND CONTENTS ON MICROSOFT WORD

Hey everyone,
For todays video, I sat down and showed you how to create a table of contents and a table of authorities on Microsoft Word! These are both essential parts of legal writing, so I figured I would share with you all how I learned to create both of these. Keep in mind there may be a different or easier way, but this is what has worked for me. I hope it helps!! Just a heads up, if you right click the “Heading 1” before you change the formatting on the specific part your referencing, you can choose to update the formatting to whatever your formatting is before you click “Heading 1”
Hopefully that helps and makes sense! Lol

Applied for a job as a Data word processor in a law firm and they need someone who has an idea on how to create table or contents and table of authorities. I have never done law before but this was helpful for me to practice on. I have done table of contents before but differently. In a more traditional way but this info helps even now two years later. So thank you. I hope I get the job.

for heading one, highlight whatever and hit ctrl+alt+1 and for heading 2 hit ctrl+alt+2 and so on

How do you get around the "Start by Appling a heading style from the Styles gallery to the selected text" ?!??!

All that header formatting should already be done when the proofreading is done. And it should NOT take all those steps. That was perhaps a MacBook thing. You just go to the line (don’t highlight), BOOM, Header 1. No changing font or anything else.

Thank you for your help. I'm just learning how to do this and have a question. I have the TOC done, but when I click on it to take me to that page it doesn't do anything. It is not linked. It is all highlighted gray and nothing happens. I think I must be missing a step

How do I delete a citation from the box?

Instead of left clicking on the Heading 1 button, right click on it and choose “update heading to match selection”… it will apply the current formatting to the heading formatting from then on. After that you only have to left click on the heading button to apply it to headings. When you get to your first heading 2, update heading to match selection again, then after that you’ll be good for all the heading 2s.

I believe it won't really affect your word document. If you save as a pdf, it will allow you to click on a specific topic and it will take you to that page.

Not really helpful. This is not a table of contents for a record on appeal. it is a table of contents for a legal brief.
