If we went on this philosophy then there wouldn't be no news because that's how this world works. People study to talk about topics that they have covered for decades. Now my issue is not every player that has played needs to talk either because of the lack of journalism skills it's more emotional talking than actual facts and that's what players say journalist don't have so which one is it cuz it can't be both.

Nothing can replace the fan's perspective. Podcast by players provide better insight. But we can never have y'all perspective. We aren't pros. Your insight is needed. But fan perspective is a pivotal part of sportscasting.

I think the player podcast thing has a limited lifecycle though. Eventually it will burn out especially when it gets overly saturated and you come at it from a "I'm right because I played and you don't know what you're talking about because you didn't" standpoint. There will be outliers that will stick around for the long haul though like Gil, Shannon, Shaq, Cam, and other well known personalities in sports.

I think most locals know their teams we would run into plenty of players at a bar after games but now with social media not gonna happen

Podcasts are a throwback to Talk Radio, so the older folk get drawn in by the nostalgic feel of it. The young folk are drawn in because of the engagement through social media, so they get to feel like they can stay connected and they get to feel like their opinions are heard and matter. 🤔🎙️📻🤷🏽‍♂️

I love that retired players are getting the opportunities to make their own shows. But at the same time, they have their own biases against certain teams and players bc of their own experiences. So it will never be “better” than a traditional NBA journalist/analyst

I agree that no one will have a better outlook on sports than the athletes themselves. But the way your articulate your points is key to viewers. Which is why to a certain extent you'll always need sports journalists.

Kay Adams is great and asks about the family and kids and is so fascinated with their lives and gives us great info. She stays curious and never acts like the expert. She asks questions like it's her first time learning, even though she knows the answers. Gets the players to open up in a unique way.

Shad made a good point in terms of the media being more relatable to the average viewer than the athletes . While athletes can offer more detailed accounts/perspectives rooted in experience ..a large segment of the American sports viewing public didn’t play sports or played for a short amount of time . The analysts and journalists speak more from our perspective. They just have a more fleshed out view point due to access to information and other resources

Actors, directors, musicians, politicians, and artists are also professions where people get judged by people who've never done the job. Hell, I'm a roofer and I'm frequently being judged by clients who never put one nail in a roof
