Yes I watched every episode here in U.K. 1989 and again when it re ran in around 2004 and again on you tube I think Kath And Lou’s and Daphne’s interview were the best they were very honest and appreciative of the role and still are and don’t say it was just a job I can’t remember this or that !
I love that the writers took Kath Maxwell on such a rollercoaster of a journey during her time in Wentworth; good guy, bad guy, top dog, etc, yet she never lost her ‘edge’. She was a survivor. When the show ended,I was glad we parted on good terms with Kath.
Love Kate Hood! Always said she was the best thing about Prisoner's final 92 episodes. Her acting was spectacular and had me rooting for her and against Rita/Lurch. I remember cheering when she fought back against Lexie in the laundry, getting the better of her quickly.
Thanks for asking my question Ken and Matt, I loved this interview. Kate Hood is such a talented actor, and it’s good to see her on top form and she is still doing what she is passionate about
Thank you for another superb interview. Kate is fab to listen to and played one of the best characters in the final year, actually one of the best in the entire series.
Another outstanding interview.....It would be amazing if for one special episode of Talking Prisoner Matt/Ken would broadcast from outside the studio/prisoner building and also take us fans on a tour inside....As a huge Talking Prisoner fan I actually recall Lois Collinder / Alice Lurch Jenkins actually saying she liked Maths ...the only one I think so far who has.
Hi Shaun, such a great idea, we would really love to do that as Ken would love to make a trip back to the channel 10 studios and so would I…and yes you are right, I just remembered Lois said she liked Maths 😀 hope you are well. Matt
That would be an amazing special episode! Nice bit of OB location work for you. Ken could see how much is still the same. You might have to be quick- if the studio closes immediately after neighbours finishing filming
Most important for me after the disability stuff is what she says about Taya Stratton. Lovely. A live wire. Yes Spider was unpredictable and that was awesome. 👍
Guys you're bringing these interviews at just the right time for me. Lynda Stoner's was when I was re-watching her episodes and now Kate just as I'm starting her run on the show again. I look forward to this.
@@TalkingPrisoner I would say approx 10. Originally with my brother, then my mother, on my own, several times with my ex husband and now on my own again. I've been watching since 1990 and still mostly watch on my original vhs recordings.

I absolutely loved this interview - what a lovely lady! Kath was one of the best, misunderstood characters in the whole series. If the women hadn't turned on her at the start then she probably never would have gone down the 'bad' road that she did. Admittedly she did a lot of things wrong, but so did the Warriors - and they never apologised to her when it turned out that it was Nancy's diary that was responsible for the screws finding out about things, and not Kath lagging!!
Kate Hood's character of Kath Maxwell was to me the best antagonist in the whole series since Doyle's stint during the first season. Hood really did a great work, making you wanting to dislike the character, but still felt tons of sympathy for her. The pain she felt for her kid's tragic fate, the emotional block, it was so well written and acted. Her special relation with Merle, being like a mother to her and feeling remorse when she used her, that was also brilliant acting, really. She's one of the reasons the whole series ended on a high note. I also must say this interview shows the fire in her heart, working for improvement for people with disability. An important aswell as impressive work. Fantastic 🫶
These interviews are absolutely fabulous. It's everything I've always wanted to know! THANK YOU! So good to see our favourite characters after all of these years!
Great Interview ... Loved the fact That Kath Maxwell had a good recall of her time in and around Prisoner....when she mentioned Spider Simpson/Taya Stratton I recall around about my 3rd viewing of the series I started looking up various actors/actresses to see what they were doing and I was Shocked at the Sad ending for Taya and some others who were no longer with us....In any case, the Interview was Fantastic !!!
I hated Kath Maxwell at first but then i loved her and her acting was so good, lovely lady. I would love to see an interview with the actress who played Merle.
Great interview and Kate is such a wonderful actress and advocate for people with disabilities. Really enjoyed her talking about her time on Prisoner and the final year. Kath was such a difficult character to empathise with at times simply because she hid herself so deeply in the character she created, and chose to be once she ended up as a Prisoner. Thanks Matt, Ken and Kate for another wonderful interview. I wonder if the up and coming interviews watch these interviews with their old workmates / cellmates!!
Thanks for your kind words Billy, it was amazing to learn about Kates life and her thoughts on Kath…her character was so unique as her crime was to help her daughter and she ended up in prison where she did not really belong, very controversial back then and even now
Hi, Stephen here Just brilliant. What a fine actress and person Kate is. She gave so many insights into the real complexity of Kath's character and her many comprehensive interactions with other characters in the important final year of Prisoner. A brilliant recount. Loved her occasional references to disabilities. I particularly enjoyed many of Kath's encounters with Louise Siversen's Lou Kelly. Lou's constantly wired personality against Kath's relative calmness (despite being wired inside) was really impressive. Louise's portrayal of such an immoral and blunt character (with iconic 80's hair) was as impressive as Kate's portrayal of Kath. Capital W for Wow. Kath's dedication to Merle highlighted her character's gift as a teacher I believe this tied in very well with Peta Toppano's character Karen Travers at the start of the series. It was a lovely nod to teachers and the work they do every day. Kath's interactions with wonderful Gerda Nicolson's Ann Reynolds were also strong and memorable. Bless dear Gerda. Such a fine actress and such a centrepiece of Prisoner. Thank you Matt and Ken for bringing to life such a vital part of television and pop culture history with your shows. You are worth your weight in gold. Cheers, Stephen
Kath was a massively underrated character. Some viewers just cast her as the baddie and could not see any of the nuance that the writers gave the part, and Kate infused into her performance. She, like Joan, was a complex and at times sympathetic character. Kath hardened herself to survive and knew she could only exist in Wentworth if she had some form of control/calling the shots - her intelligence was her trump card over most of the prisoners incarcerated with her at the time. Kate made the role believable, and I felt I could understand why she did everything that she did, even if I didn't always "approve" of the methods
Kath & Merle forever ❤ ETA: What a fabulous woman Kate seems to be. I am on her Prisoner episodes now and the way in which you feel so many things for her character (pity, anger, hate, sadness, empathy) is such a testament to her talents. I also really appreciate how open and honest she was and how appreciative she seemed to be at the love she received via the questions from fans. People have always mocked Prisoner for its apparently shaky sets, unrealistic storylines in later seasons etc but the one theme that runs through these interviews for me is how seriously they took the work itself, and how much effort they put into their performances. I think that is what helps maintain its legacy as brilliant TV, because of their perfornances and commitment to their characters. Would LOVE an episode with Elspeth who sadly never seems to be at any of the cast gatherings and is one I would love to hear from about her experience as the only character to be there for the entirety of the show. Thanks again guys! Love from Northern Ireland.
I don’t think the script writers of Prisoner Cell Block H knew which direction to take Kath Maxwell. They weren’t sure if she do well as bad or good. They wanted a real baddie for sure , someone that the fellow inmates would hate but Kath showed her good self towards the end. It was the fellow prisoners who didn’t understand the circumstances of Kath that made her a ‘bad’ person but in reality Kath had to make a difficult decision that destroyed her life. The actor that played her was the right person for the job. That’s the good thing about prisoner, the writers always have the habit of finding the right actor for the role and they got it perfectly right here.
People are idiots 😂 Can't separate the actor from the character in a bleeding tv show. I bet some drongos faint when they see Daniel Craig, thinking James Bond is dead and Daniel Craig is a ghost.
Kath was one of my top 5 characters, the storylines had gotten so great again in the last few months and it was such a shame it ended (reminds me of when the soap El Dorado got great in the last months too). By the way, a few years back I conversed via email with Rebecca Dines who played Vicki McPherson and it was great talking about PCBH with her (and about her onscreen friend Spider), she seemed very open to chatting about it. Maybe you can get her on ? I told her about my favourite scene of her, when she was in the dentist chair and she asked me for any other scenes that I liked her in, so I have a feeling she would be a good guest.
Ooh a woman after my own heart with the ads driving her crazy thing. As an intelligent person I never understood how adverts even work. As in, do the job that they are designed to do. Particularly on the Internet. Surely even the ad companies must realise that most people just mute their device/s when the ads are on? On my PC I run 2 screens at all times. With independent volume controls. So if ads appear on one then that one is muted whilst I do whatever I'm doing on the other one. Seeing something in an advert telling me to buy it, would make me actively not want to buy it. But that's probably just a British thing tbh. The British have an inbuilt spite trait I think. lol
Love the interview with Kate she appreciates her iconic status and the continued following prisoner has
