I liked Jcrew and I never purchased any outfit in Zara, H&M, Gap, etc. Jcrew cutting and materials are better. If Jcrew were gone, I would buy more in BCBG, Michael Kors. I don’t think middle tier outfit market is gone. My JCrew jacket once was recognized as a Stella McCartney jacket because it provided clean classic chic look.
JCrew stores were closing way before CoVid. It is not ok they're using this time as an excuse for their poor business practices. I used to love this store. I noticed over time the quality of fabric went way down but the prices stayed the same or went up, so I stopped shopping there. When stores change to cheaper fabrics, cheaper factories and cheap labor and solely on their name brand people notice & stop shopping there. And JCrew isn't the only store that this has happened to. Think of Luck Brand Jean's, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers. They all went cheap. Why would anyone pay that amount money when they can go get the exact same design and fabric at Old Navy? The quality has to match the price point. Stick to high quality fabrics, good & decent factories & your customers will remain loyal.
J Crew in our area had the snobbiest employees ever. We shopped for school there and they where unbearable, needless to say we stopped and they lost our business. It’s a shame employees would feel the need to act as if they owned the store when at most they are on a salary to sell.
Never been in one of their stores, but I buy their clothes used from the Goodwill, Goodwill Bins, Buffalo Exchange, etc. Good quality stuff. Mainly their button-downs and jeans. I always check the inner tags to see the season/year the item was produced. I tend to wear a medium, but their medium shirts generally seem a bit wide/long, so a small works better. I'm mainly into punk, probably not their target audience. Always liked plain basics and that is the kind of J. Crew stuff I buy used. Volcom, Levi's also do this well.
Just started shopping at JCrew (after a long haitus). Bought beautiful retro A-line linen skirt and a classic black tank dress. So happy w/ the quality (sewing & fabric).🥰 HOPE THEY SURVIVE THIS DIFFICULT TIME!
From one Canadian perspective: poorly designed website with many misleading information, terrible customer service and most of all, no so good product quality. I wouldn’t mind their price tag and am willing to afford more as long as they could solve those problems

I lived in their 2005-2010 styles, cozy comfy and yet professional. Loved it, then after 2010 I really didn’t like the new styles. It started to become like Old Navy or Gap styles.
They did lost their way to the run way look. Too bad. I saw them as the big brother to GAP. For both to reclaim their glory, they will have to return to their roots
High levels of debt still kills companies, even in today’s low interest environment but losing your key designer leads to a loss of vision consequently direction. That where they need to focus
For me JCrew used to be one of the biggest staples in my closest but like most retailers focus on the slim fit esthetic and phase out the larger customer. They do not carry a 38 waist in their stores or an xxl. I understand gashion trends but when america report a lrg population being in the larger category and you eliminate those shoppers have grown up with the brand and still want to wear the brand but are heavier. Banana Republic also has this issue and i am sure is headed this route soon.

if the quality is good, you should. cheap clothes dont last long. but at the same time, guess it depends on what you're wearing it with and where you're going
Because middle class in US is gone.
J. Crew used to be good they went way to hipster and funky instead of subtle classic, smart , preppy but comfortable. Classy.
Yea I used to live in jcrew chinos, jeans, sweaters - then the quality went downhill.
You have to either be luxury or cheap to survive in a recession. A lot of these middle of the road brands will get wiped within the next 5-10 years.
That's not unusual, a lot of brands count on only 5-10 years of hype to rake in cash then call it a day.

J Crew was my go-to in the 90s up to early 2000s then I just felt it became overpriced junk
Then???
My parents were also really into jcrew then too! It seems the company outgrew its core customers

J Crew was an amazing classic style brand until the mid-2010’s when it tried to compete with Zara’s bohemian fashions.

Quality took a huge nosedive and prices went up. Customers are not stupid. They literally had everyone eating out of their hands and threw it away.
J Crew used to be my favorite store but once the prices for a shirt went from $50 to $400, that's when I said goodbye to J Crew.
Are you mistaking JCrew for Gucci or Armani? Nothing at JCrew is that expensive.

Their chino shorts are my favorite! But I only buy them when there's a sale because they're pretty expensive IMO
I went into a Atlanta JCrew a few months ago. A sweater ON SALE was over $100 and the quality was no better than Target. I left empty handed.
So overpriced and was only worth going dueing their sales.

Yes it was so expensive. That's why it died.

So, which clothing brands are doing well? What can we learn from them?
Yep. The fits started to be all over the place. And the quality dipped way down.
J. Crew jumped on that Brooklyn bandwagon, but there wasn't enough space on the vehicle.
Why Brooklyn?

I agree 100%. Fit is the missing link for many low priced retailers/brands.
