When this was originally No 1 in the UK, I remember thinking what Crap it was. All these years later , it's a bloody masterpiece compared to what's No 1 today...
it's called dumbing down mate. I was 14 at the time and I went to a majority black and asian school (I'm white Irish btw) and contrary to you I loved the song because I grew up from birth till about 15 in a black and asian community and never once did I experience any racism, untill I moved to a white majority neighbourhood. People got on a lot better in the 70's and as to my initial point about dumbing down, songs that you thought were shit in the 70's actually sound brilliant compared to todays crap.
