I regard the MK4 Cabrios as a refresh of the MK3s. It got the MK4 front end and probably engines, some of which were carryovers from the MK3, but most of the parts especially on the inside were directly from the MK3. Don't know why this didn't get the much better MK4 interior though.
They are totally just a light facelift of the Mk3s. They never got CAN, and still use the Mk3 ABA engines and 020 transmissions. They did get a Mk4 steering wheel though!
