this song was written so well. starts as a synth pop then turns into pop rock, a few breaks, nice melody layers. No wonder Status Quo turned it into a world hit.
I was today years old, when I found out that was the original... Heard it on an 80s radio, and I was like, what, this sounds familiar, but it's not exactly the same... Used Shazam... It's never too late to discover such a gem 💎

Thanks to Leo Moracchioli for his cover of this song. I don't know why I've never heard it before, I went in the Army in 1982. As an impressionable idiot I would have latched onto this song hard.
As I saw a while ago in a documentary this was recorded in the basement of the building that housed the Dutch program Top Pop , which aired from 1970-1987. You can't imagine it now but the prop manager at some point asked some guy he knew 'Can you lend me some UZIs and some blanks for the recording' :)
I just forwarded this video to my son who us serving national service for two years. It is compulsory for Singaporean males from age 18 to serve. They are allowed to exempt 2x I think, if they prefer to complete further studies and serve later than 18yo.
That and the Status Quo sold their soul and performed it with the British military for a military recruitment video. Those a-holes even changed the antiwar lyrics.
You're in the Army Now" is a song by the South African-born Dutch duo Bolland & Bolland, released in 1982. The song spent 6 consecutive weeks on the top of the Norwegian singles chart.[1] A cover by British rock band Status Quo, simplified as "In the Army Now", was internationally successful in 1986.

You're in the army now (whoa whoa) You're in the army, now You're in the army now (whoa whoa) You're in the army, now
As a swede growing up without videochannels, this is the preferred version by sound, however seeing the video gives a sence of karaoke as someone wrote
@Weghweh Hwewehwhe Yeah I just watched the status quo one where the Brits are all partying. Ridiculous. And their album cover has a frigging British flag. The real lyrics actually contain “Uncle Sam” and “on the way to ‘Nam” and the song is meant to be an anti-war, Vietnam protest song. In 2010 Status Quo changed the lyrics to pro-war, I didn’t know they could add their own words to someone else’s song. They bastardized it
@@PutinsMommyNeverHuggedHim To be fair, you can tweak lyrics, though their version is a tad abrasive. Bad Wolves change the lyrics of Zombie to reflect more modern times, updating the mentioned military technology, as well as changing "it's the same old theme since 1916" to "it's the same old theme in 2018" (owtte). That works

When I was a student I listened to this song in 84, only 30 years later I found out that the real author is Bolland, the original sounds better than the Status Quo
@Tristin Blaisdell Bolland en Bolland where two brothers from the Netherlands. And they where singers and producers. They most famous person they product was Falco.

I Would Love To Know Where Bolland & Bolland Are Now? Did They Make Recurring Videos Of This Song Like Status Quo?
I always thought this was a Sabaton song, but after Leo's vid I see that this was the original, not gonna lie Sabatons cover sounds like what it should sound like, but respect for the original, Leo's cover is also good.
I disagree Status quo version is way better than Sabaton. Sabaton made this something different, doesn't mean something better. Even tho I like all versions
I agree. Sabaton made the song a lot more serious and personal. You get a sense that the song is sung from a soldier instead of an entity promoting pro-war or anti-war sentiments.
OMFG the original! :) Thinking about the song … well. I was subject ot the conscrption to the Austrian Bundesheer. Until this day I think I would gladly defend Austria with a weapon in hand if attacked, but I would also treat anyone who wants to come peacefully in a peaceful, respectful way. Even if I have to refuse him entry afterwards.
Status Quo is so cheap that they sold their soul for money, they changed its lyrics to a pro-war in a 2010 video and sang with soldiers who were smiling. It was to raise money for soldiers who fought in stupid wars (Iraq, Afghanistan etc) and the government couldn't take care of them even though they have enough money to make new bombs and destroy more brown and black countries.
This is the original song ,RESPECT!!!!!!

Holy crap I thought Francis Rossi had written the song. Now I'm disappointed in Status Quo.
I'm confused. And disappointed.

My opinion the best version Legends Status Quo
I was going through my moms old vinyls and found this. What a great find. The entire album is anti war propaganda and I love it.

Beautiful!
This original is more like a ballad, this song meant to be. When Status Quo sings it, it’s more like a military song.
its more military song if sabaton sings it
Laibach perfected it
i do agree; this was supposed to be an anti-war song ! what a shame !
Claude Louis All versions, except the 2010 Status Quo perversion in which they changed the lyrics, are anti-war songs.
I don't think it changed the message, I always felt like the Status Quo one was an anti-war song, as well.
The original....in the army now..salute!

It saddens me that the Status Quo cover is more known than the original, and that the amazing and faithful Sabaton cover is also little known.
That and the Status Quo sold their soul and performed it with the British military for a military recruitment video. Those a-holes even changed the antiwar lyrics.
