Hey saw the interview you did today with Dave's Bonsai...would love to see you post more videos on your channel...especially the "lilliput" jades. Thanks...
My jades have improved dramatically since I found your channel. I was doing standard bonsai practice of let it grow out and cut back, but now that I’m constantly trimming the new growth for ramification I actually have a nice canopy. So easy.
Hey Gilbert, just wanted to drop in here and say you’ve inspired me enough through all your amazing videos and media posts to start on an endeavor of beginning my own jade tree nursery/bonsai nursery. I’ve wanted to start my own small business for some time and I’ve come to the conclusion that growing jades from cuttings and turning them into works of art as bonsai is something my city of LA hasn’t seen and will be an extremely unique business in my view. And I’d like to thank you for giving me the spark of motivation to begin my journey. Much Love brother ✌️🕉
Awwww man that's so awesome! With all the new interest in portulacaria afra bonsai it will definitely be a hit! Keep me posted on your progress and congratulations my friend!
Hey :) Just got my first portulacaria 3 months ago after discovering your channel, also got 2 small branches (sold as desk plants) that i started growing outside, i was so surprised seeing how well they grow, can't wait to start trimming next year :) Greetings from France
watched all of your videos!! just want to say thanks for the great videos and all the inspiration, hope to see you make some more content in the future!!
Hi Gilbert, absolutely love your trees and videos and this music, really puts you in the mood. I’ve just subbed up and acquired my first elephant bush, I’m working on normal jade bonsai too but can’t wait to start with this. Thank you for sharing all the very best from uk x
Wow.... I first encounter you on Pintrest like 6 years ago! If I remember correctly it was a jade forrest group progression that caught my eye. Discovered your pintrest page, bought my first jade, you and I had some conversations, you recommended osmocote and full sun and I've been into these trees ever since! Now you have a growing channel, congrats! Keep inspiring others brother. Only good can come from it.
Hi. Love your channel. Could you please do a quick video on how to start creating branches on a straight stem of port' afra? For example, do you cut off all stem leaves that you don't want to be branches and let the others develop into branches and allow them to grow a little before pruning them? I'd really appreciate if you could demonstrate how to start the process as I have some new straight stem ports here and don't know what to do for the best. Thank you very much.
Hi there! Thank you for the work you do, seeing all your beautiful jade bonsais is very motivating! I would like to ask you about your favourite and most fruitful ways of jade propagation. Having seen some videos about soil propagation (drying the cuttings and planting them in soil right away) and water propagation (just sticking your cuttings in a bottle of water or in a cup), I wanted to try out soil propagation, but it totally failed on me, and now I’m afraid to try something else because it’s really hard to get little jades in my country😅 Could you give a piece of advice as to what kind of propagation you use and what conditions must be met in order for the cuttings to root more successfully (soil/water, the use of rooting hormone, sunlight etc.) ? It seems like a great topic for a new video, I’m sure there is a lot of people out there struggling with the propagation of little jades. Love your work, thank you❤
Great relaxing video my friend, thanks. I would like to ask when is the best season of the year for pruning a portulacaria? See, I got this one as a gift a few months ago and I am planning to let it accustom to my apartment for at least a year until I can finally work on it (It's a somewhat mature plant with 3 thick trunks and I am planning on having two trunks chopped off and the two others wired and trained with guy wires) However it has been losing its foliage since I brought it home, I suspect it is because it's not getting enough sunlight. I live just outside Mexico City, however this winter has been harsher than usual with the minimal going down as far as 4 degree Celsius. I have a few years of experience growing and training junipers so this will be my first portulacaria. Cheers!
Hi Gilbert, I love your video as and have learned so much from you. I was wondering what you will advise me to do with this Jade, I’ve had it for almost 10 years but find that there are two branches that are very think, please let me know what would you do. 😊 Thanks so very much
Can you make a tree that you grow with your comunity (from start until i is a nice bonsai) You inspired me also so much that i Made Baby 20 of this bonsai trees
It would be very helpful if you could drop a video or provide some sort of information about fertilizers that you use and how to use them too! Love from India!
Hi, First of all i LOVE your videos!! Second, Am i able to do this with a tricolor Portulacaria? I can't seem to find any information and mostly i see the BEAUTIFUL green trees like yours. Thank you!
I got 2 new portulacaria afra that I’m growing indoors. Any tips on how often to water them? Got them 2 weeks ago and repotted the following day, started noticing some leaves are shriveled, wrinkled and falling off. And some leaves that looks completely fine also drop. Not too sure what to do!
I’ve watched so many of your videos. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m trying to find this species in my area but im having a hard time finding them locally. Any suggestions?
I saw one of your comments in a past video mention Osmocote as being your fertilizer of choice. Which kind of osmocote and how much and when do you add to the young little jade’s, say one that is almost a year old.
hi, I bought my first Portulacaria yesterday. i just finished repotting it. Because it is an offshoot, the roots are not developed well, and there isnt any nebari. I basically just layed the roots on the gound, and stabilized the tree upright with a tent peg. I am wondering if that way I can develop a nice nebari. Of course I covered the roots superficially, to give them some protection. What do you think? Thank you!
Let it grow!. make sure the roots are in the soil and just let it grow. .. when you repot it in a year or 3 trim the roots and fan them out in the pot and then put soil on them and let them grow more. its all you can really do.
Hello! I have a question about my spekboom, and I was wondering if I could get your advice! Since I've bought it a couple of weeks ago, the leaves have become slightly darker, and a little bit thinner. It still seems healthy and is sprouting new leaves. Why would this coloration change occur? my thought is that it isn't getting enough light, would you agree?
I have seen videos where they talk about cutting back certain branches to a specific node I can't find the videos no more that explain that about Jade's. Can you explain this to me? I am talking about when I see something like cut it back to where there is two leaves on this node etc etc
Gilbert please help! I live in the central valley CA and not sure what to do for wintering my P. Afra. I have about thirty, and not sure if they have to come inside for december/january or if I should just leave them out in the cold. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!
Hello Sir, I have just discovered your channel "LITTLE JADE BONSAI" superb video and explanation, I have just bought a Portulacaria Afria plant which is already a small bonsai, in France we do not have the same ingredients to make the substrate, but I have it done with Akadama + compost + vermiculite, is it good, you fertilize with Osmocote how do you put the granules on the substrate or in a small basket. kind regards Philip
Portularcaria Afra will root from pretty much any cutting. Just cut a piece off, wait a few hours for the end to dry a bit then put it in soil. Any soil. I root mine in gardening soil then transfer to a succulent style mix later. Wait to water them a about 3 to 5 days or when the leaves start to get wrinkles. Thats all you have to do for dwarf jade. Other trees are not so easy.

So relaxing! Im curious to how you get that much leaf size reduction... do you defoliate your trees entirely, when is the best time to do that?

Very relaxing!😍 what are those small circular things at the base of the tree?fruits?
Is it normal, that around 20% of the leaves fall off in the wintertime?
Yes! Sometimes a lot more when brought indoors for winter.
