  • The first official day of practice for high school football teams is Friday. Many schools have been working hard all summer to get ready for the season. News 13's Luke Notestine caught up with this week's Game Changers, Owen and Asheville High Schools to see why this should be a big year for both teams.
High school football teams across the state are getting ready for the 2014 season. "The kids are running around quicker because they know what to do. That makes it fun. No hesitation. Hopefully that will help us out early in the year especially," says Owen Football Coach, Kenny Ford.
At Owen, the Warhorses are picked to win the Western Highlands Conference. With only 26 players on the roster, the guys will have to play on both sides of the ball. Owen will rely heavily on their running game. Jager Gardner is the Preseason Conference Player of the Year. He rushed for close to 2,600 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. His counterpart, Zee Johnston helps provide a versatile offensive attack. "In some games, they will key on Jager. But then we can throw something different at them. As long as the whole team is doing what they are supposed to do. It helps us and keeps the defense off," says Johnston.
At Asheville, the Cougars are the preseason favorite to win the MAC once again. After winning the conference the past nine years in a row, expectations are high. Senior Cameron Ray will look to make a difference as a wide receiver and a safety. "My quarterback trusts me and i trust him that he's going to give me the ball every time. Me and Alex Polk. We are just going to be a great team," says Ray.
Head Coach, Danny Wilkins has a knack for getting the very best out of his teams. This year, he will have a solid foundation of players on the roster. "This is about giving a kid another chance. Some people say it's all about winning. We want to win as much as anyone else. There's a kid's future at stake here. We're trying to give him an opportunity to redirect his course. So far what we've seen, that's happening," says Wilkins.
Asheville opens the season Friday, August 22nd against Hendersonville. Owen's first game is August 22nd against Enka.
