Matter of, it’s possible Hayao Miyazaki probably worked on a few of the first episodes. He was a part of Top Gear before they split into Ghibli and Pacific.
Thundercats 80’s cartoon visuals and the art direction still hold well even now. When compared to similar cartoons of it’s time such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the Thundercats cartoon is light years ahead of it’s time. I own both DVD sets of the two cartoons and in the He-Man documentary, the producer stated that they cut corners when making the show; reused frames of animation and backgrounds to save on time and cost. It doesn’t look like the Thundercats cartoon skimmed on that, but ironically, the He-Man and She-Ra Princess of Power DVD sets are superior to the Thundercats DVD sets. The presentation is amazing as well as the content!

It's something; now, the Ancient Spirits of Evil are more active in holding Mumm-Ra accountable for his failures, whereas Mumm-Ra had previously been left to his own devices and the extent of the Ancient Spirits' involvement was empowering Mumm-Ra when he called upon them.
if you look at the statues you will notice (from left to right) they resemble Set,Sobek,Atuume and Thoth...4 gods from anciant exptian mythology. i find it ironic seeing as ,aside from set,the other 3 were good,not evil.
I think it's a matter of perspective; especially from a Jewish one, *all* the Egyptian deities would be evil (it even says God punished them in the Torah Book of Exodus). So my theory on the other three is this: *Sobek* just looks evil because he has a crocodile head. *Atuume* the great he/she is the absolute alpha Egyptian deity. His/her presence indicates the pantheon's support at maximum power. *Thoth* is the great knower of secret lore, mysticism, and magic, so his presence shows how Mumm-Ra's power stems from the deeply arcane.

There's a prequel comic that explains Mumra's origins along with a few other bits including the creation of the Sword of Omens.
Though in the final episode of the original series, Mumm-Ra realized that the Ancient Spirits had no power on the physical plane (outside of a Black Pyramid) without him, and thus they needed him (to spread their evil) as much as he needed them; it was the first and only time in the series where he then gave THEM orders, and entered the Book of Omens against their will. They quickly realized the jig was up, and sent a backup entity (Pyron) to assist Mumm-Ra.
