People who responded to Callas' voice in the '50s must never have heard any of this music before, with all the great singers who came before her. They must be appreciating Verdi after the long hiatus during the war years when nobody in Europe was studying voice. She just screams with an awful voice.

Roger Propes Awful voice, if you want, that's a matter of taste, but to hear scales and trills like that you must go back before the first world war, not the second ! The 40's were the worst period for belcanto.
