Thank you for posting this interesting and informative video. Using your method for germination, ie. clear plastic cup with wet paper towel with seeds in between (the cup and paper), I was happily surprised to germinate several (about 50%, n=7/15) Banksia integrifolia (Coastal Banksia) seeds after 2-3 weeks (sown 27/1/24) from my handsome tree (~15m) of nearly 25 years. Thanks to the Black Cockatoos who love the tree and throw down cones during their regular feasts! Often get Rainbow Lorikeets visiting too!
The seeds were not exposed to smoke and were kept wet whilst sitting inside on a north facing window sill. The germinated seeds are now in pots on 19/2/24 with seedling mix. I’m hoping they’ll thrive in the coming months.
If you’re interested in some seeds, I’m happy to send you some in the post as a thank you.
    Kindest regards, Craig (Sydney Australia).

Craig - I'm so glad you were successful growing your banksia seeds - the plants I grew in the video are still alive and growing well after 8 years! Banksias are such a beautiful plant! I'm still waiting for my coccinea to bloom.

yes - have had good luck - but had to still have the temperature change between day and night - so here in Sacramento plant in October outside in your mix - germinates over the winter

Thanks for the video mate. I am in Australia & have just extracted my own seeds from an old tree that I have on my property. I am going to try to propagate these seeds as my old tree is 'old!' I am intrigued as to why you put the seeds in the fridge as part of the method. In the Australian bush these trees rely on bushfires to open the seed pods & the seeds are supposed to be carried on the wind & propagate naturally in the ashes. I have not seen your other videos showing your method as I have just come across this one but I will seek it out before I place the seeds (that I just collected) into the soil. It looks like you have been very successful using your method. Thank you again for the video.

@@growproteas1148 Thank you for that info mate. I put my seeds in cups like your video & am waiting to see the result . I also put some into soil & some into trays with paper towels. They are on my veranda here in the south of Western Australia where these trees grow naturally but on my property they have been squeezed out by Peppermint gums & flowering gums. The climate is cool at night so the fridge might not be needed. Good luck with your Proteas & thank you again for your reply.

Thanks for the videos. I'm growing some banksia birthday candles from seed. I'm growing them indoors under plant lights for my garden in Portland, Oregon. I'm watching them grow. They're about 2 months now. A little slower to take off, but I think maybe that's to be expected indoors. They have 2 sets of true leaves and are about 1-1.5" tall. Anyhow, I'll be following your tips in the future.

So cool the 2 little 'spines' the seedling has, i suppose for protection, before it even gets its true leaves...is this typical of all Proteaceae, or just Banksia? I have had 5 out of 5 Banksia plagiocarpa ( 'Blue Banksia' -tropical species from Nth, Queensland, Australia. germinated in simple sand-peat mix....no smoke treatment, but after no sprouting for 3 weeks, i let mix dry out, then thoroughly wet again, and they all came jumping up. So excited, i hope they grow on well, and i am looking forward to trying some more growing of this gorgeous family.

Smoke water combined with smoke flakes (mixed in the soil) help to bring the Banksia to life. Most require fire for the next generation.

I LOVE this site, and have been trying to grow Banksia Victorae for months. I did get ONE to sprout in a ceramic pot, it was looking good, BUT, one time I watered it the tiny new leaves curled up, and that seems to be a reaction to overwatering... I was heartsick, after TWO MONTHS of growing these. I think I should have just misted the leaves, and NOT watered the pot, unless I could have put the pot in a dish of water absorbing from the bottom. Once a plant gets too wet, there seems to be no way to save them? What a sad experience... The one that germinated in a paper towel up died once I put it into soil. WISH there was some way to grow these more easily.. Next time I will try FIVE different methods.

  • @24Greek

If possible I will show you what my little banksia looked like after 2 months. After two months it suddenly curled up and died, possibly from over watering.. So SENSITIVE!!!
It was well drained, but that still did not matter. Sadly this group does not allow images?

WHAT cup is better to use, the cardboard sprouting type, or a plastic one with holes in the bottom? If I got one to grow in the cardboard cups I would just cut away the bottom in replanting them and NOT take them out of the cup... That seems would allow less stress? I would add a photo but don't seem to be able to do this. WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? I am in California, and still having trouble growing Banksia. How can I add an image?
