Just marvelous! I have been reading on her website for two decades now and it's a pleasure watching her talk on the topic that's dear to many of us - Mirza Ghalib.

    Brilliant!
Dr. Pritchett has done more for Ghalib studies than perhaps anyone else.
Her creativity, rigor and fresh thinking are a gift to us Ghalib lovers.
And her sense of humor certainly helps when explaining the wit in Ghalib's poetry.

This video prominently highlights the problem Western academia has when it focuses on subjects way beyond its remit - to wit, to avert the receiver's gaze from its inadequacies, western academia surreptitiously focuses on technicalities but fails to grasp any of the nuances, where in fact the actual beauty lies.
I've read most of the commentary written by Frances on the University of Columbia's website and indeed there are some insightful moments, but those moments are far and few between. In contrast, someone unlettered in the urdu tradition like Gulzar can in five minutes comprehensively cover everything Frances takes an hour to substantiate. Conversely, if you want an in-depth account of Ghalib's poetry, grounded in tradition and which grasps the nuances, then turn to someone like the late Kader Khan. These two are by no means renown sub-continental experts on Ghalib but in comparison to Frances' they're light years ahead in understanding and can explain it much better as they're firmly grounded in the urdu culture...
