    I own two 420’s.87 and 89. I payed 600 apiece for them. One has a 60” deck and the other I put a 47 snowblower on which I purchased for 750 bucks. I love both machines! Nothing better! Had to put a PTO electric clutch and lower pulley on the 87. Very expensive but worth it. Always check lower front pulley for loose splines. This pulley is about 200 bucks! Love the power steering! Thanks for the video❤

    well done, explained thoroughly. I work at the local Deere dealership, there is a
    sweet 420 available. I just put the front mount and blade on and took the deck
    off. Gotta do the research to determine age, just under 2k hours and smokes
    blue slightly, I'd love to have it, we'll see. Thank You for posting this. I learned a lot !

    Very good review. Although I do question some of your points, overall, it's well done. Having refurbished a couple of these, I would say a lot more attention to the rear axle needs to be done as they not only crack but downright destroy themselves. The frame at the axle mounts often breaks completely off which usually allows the axle to pivot enough to crack or break the opposite axle. The last 420 I did I had a hole in the bottom of the transaxle case large enough to stick your hand through. These transaxles are virtually impossible to find in good condition. After several months, I ended up converting a 318 case to the 420. It's not an easy task but it can be done.
    The front PTO clutch had to be replaced and that alone led me to repower the tractors with something a bit more modern. That PTO is very rare and very expensive. It is a total oddball due to the large crankshaft and dual belt pully sheaves. It was a showstopper. The repower engine allowed a much better PTO to be installed as it is a later design and available off the shelf at a reasonable price.
    The power steering box had to be rebuilt and that is certainly beyond most owners' capabilities to do it correctly.
    Finally, that 60" mower deck is one of the most solid I've run across with a very big "but" that comes with it. If you own one of these, I would suggest you take very good care of the gearbox. They are NLA new and no parts are available from either Deere or the Manufacturer. Finding a good one is very unlikely and after months of looking another Deere fan reluctantly parted with his spare. If you rock out the very small woodruff key of the input shaft and allow the joint to wear, you're in for a tough time getting it going again.
    All that said, I personally would not recommend anybody take on one of these models unless you're like me and really love to take on a challenge. But if you choose to do so, I have many photos and videos and I'm always happy to help others.

    A few years ago I bought a 420 and the guy said it was OK but the 24hp honda that was in it had carb issues so I went ahead after getting it home and tried starting it but nit much luck so I bought the carb and tried it and it ran but still issues so I pulled it and got a briggs 23hp and all is well. I replaced all fuel lines totally with tank filters then got a cab and wired that for led lights. I got a smow blade since the one he gave me didn't fit, later I bought a easy buck loader and it's great. I added a rear weight and new tractor tires and rims new. On the old 24hp honda I'm leaning it's in the area of a governor but I took a completion check and one sides low. I priced rear gearbox for a tiller and a used ones are crazy cost so I bought a gas unit to pull behind with a lx176 or lt160. Please supply the electric fuel pump you used in case my briggs goes out. It 8nly has around under 100 hours or less. Your posts are great helps a old fart learn more

    Damn I just picked up a 1992 420 with a whopping 3600 hours on it. Super tight. Has a Honda 24hp repower that has 400 hours on it and looks like it was done quite professionally. No creep. trans is pretty quiet. 60 deck in okay shape paint wise. No rust holes. Spindles are quiet. Only things she needs is a new paint job and axle bolts that mitigate front axle wobble. I feel someone used it alot(of course), but had it worked on by a Deere dealer it’s whole life.this thing truely shows that hours don’t mean much when it’s taken care of

    Mine didn't have a belly pan but bought 8ne fast. My steering cylinder has lots of movement but works fine. I can't see any stops for steering max. I've been thinking about making a container for hydrolic fluids that won't take forever. I'd love to have a mower deck with shaft

    Great video as always, thanks. Question- how do you like the loft in your shop? Seems like it would be super useful. The shop at my new-to-me house is 30x50' with a pretty high ceiling, so I do think there would be room.

    Hey, I just got my second 430, but the middle freeze plug on drivers side is corroded and gushes coolant. It's behind injection pump, impossible to reach. Do you have any tips about gaining access to this area? Will I have to pull water pump, crank cover, etc?

    Are the rear PTO's on thease garden tractors the standard 540 rpm?

    • @66Oliver
      @66Oliver  9 місяців тому +1

      You have to buy the PTO clutch kit, but rear PTO speed is mostly 2000 RPM. I think they might have 540 ones as well, but they’re rare.
