Me and my mum absolutely sobbed to this programme, it was so incredibly relatable to me and this really was me before I deleted social media. Even just the pressure of being at school now is so much. I really wish that we just didn't have social media, it's what is RUINING our generation..
I really wish an American streaming channel would pick this up so those of us viewers in the US who want to see it can watch it. The social media bullying is universal and this is such an important episode for all to see. From just the clips I have seen, Kate and her daughter are haunting and amazing in their roles!
Bullying starts with any interaction, whether it's in the classroom, during a senior picture, in the school hallways/bathrooms, or on social media. We need to treat bullying (no matter where it happened or when it happened), like assault charges that carry swift and serious punishments. That's the cause of these suicides and severe damage to young and older people. Unfortunately, the only way to stop this is to make the bullies accountable by severe punishment that causes them trouble getting jobs and such. That's when we are taking these crimes seriously, and healing can be accomplished.
I've just watched this. I can't believe how close it is to myself and my daughter. We're still going through it. It started 3yrs ago when she was nearly 15. Thank you channel 4 and the brilliant actresses Kate and Mia. I don't feel so alone with this.
God bless you both...I'll be praying for you! Father in heaven, we lift up to you Sharon and her daughter, we look to Your Holy Spirit for comfort and guidance as You've promised, in Jesus name.
Very timely. Kids today are living in challenging times. Social media does more harm than good. It is unbelievable this movie was improvised! Give Kate all the awards.
In some parts, I agree...but I see younger kids with smartphones...who buys them these phones? Parents. If it is for emergency situations, just buy them a flip phone to make calls. This is also a problem! I've seen toddlers holding their parent's phones while they shop in stores or on the bus...parents are also addicted to these devices and social media, and consequently, they are promoting this to their children at a very young age. No child should have a smartphone.
The perfect example of why the majority of younger people are taking meds now. Get your kids off of social media. They are exposed to way too much at young ages.
Kate Winslet is a consummate actress. As a women, she has far greater depth to her performances which go largely unappreciated. To Kate and daughter, Mia, I think your work is incredible, admirable, and touches on the very things which can pull us in opposition, but also, hopefully, eventually, bring us together. We are all on a journey of our own, and only human. Thank you both for bringing women together and in very real conversations about topics such as this. I also admire Kate greatly for her humble work speaking up for people who suffer. She gives people a voice, and the courage to develop and use their voices, their experiences, to make a lasting contribution to the work. Much respect xx ❤️
@@Gemmarose9012 I'm sorry if my comment was offensive, it was not my purpose. I meant to say that Kate Winslet is an actress with great depth of knowledge, and portrays her characters and hidden meanings with layers to her work. A deeper conversation is needed on the intricate way she explores and develops these characters. I think she's bloody brilliant
Educational departments should not be pushing for kids to do every digitally, they are not acknowledging the problem. It is like if a alcoholic had to do their work in a brewery.
I've been trying to watch this programme on Channel 4 for the better part of a year but I can't seem to get past the false error message insisting I disable my ad blocker -- I even went as far as deleting the blocker software but to no avail! Hoping another service/network picks it up so I can view sooner than later. I adore Winslet -- a brilliant actor. Cheers!
Internet and cellphones are the perfect jail, a jail with no cells,no guards,no building, Alone (inprisoned) in a world with no human contact,we forget slowly how to meet new people .
This is brilliant, though rather confronting subject matter. I have no children of my own, but I'm an attentive and involved Auntie. At the worst times, Ive noticed that the smallest move, a glance, or something said may be minor, but it can impact a growing person in so many ways. Remember the chaos, the presentness of each moment, and that Gowing and hormones can intensify everything. I've seen some dark moments, but still rays of light shine through. This can be relateable for so many of us
The most important thing, as the actors show..is love and connectedness. Taking time and space to understand, have compassion. Just to be. In an urgent or emergency situation, reach out for healthy and positive lines of support. Create these networks together as a family. Know where you can go, and where its safe and okay to be.
I am a mom and I kind of went through this similar situation. But I ended up being hurt as all 4 of my children do not speak w/ me. It is like I was abandoned. And yes, went through the same 'quite' w/ all 4 of my children. If I only knew! sigh! and for being a good mom that I thought I was, just can't figure out why my children do not speak with me. :/

I haven't watched the movie yet so I can't make a good judgment, but from what I heard its a great film for almost being completely improvised! But it does speak on real situations, maybe not in a certain manner some particularly want it to, but a different perspective is always great. Kate and Mia do present strong and meaningful performances no shutting that, well done! (If the movie seems to lack pace or structure in the dialogue it is because it was improvised or not written before the actors got the part)
A great scene is when MIA is desperate to get her phone back and picks up knife and holds it up to Kate and it looks like she might stab her to get the phone back
as a mom of 5 years old I went to one gymnastic session and I noticed all kids where starring into their phones instead of talking with each other - sad
@phoebecaulfield4062 all I can really say is good luck to you if you describe the pervasive mental health issues facing people of all backgrounds these days as "tall tantrums".
I love Kate and it looks like there is great acting in this but I’ve seen this a lot recently. I think it’s really weird and disturbing that the older generation are trying to pin everything down to phones. Some stuff yeah, I agree it can be phone related but if she’s being bullied it’s not the phone is the bullying. Or when a child is mentally ill no adult will accept that they are mentally ill, they have to pin it on social media or phones
Because the bullying happens mostly on social media…there is no escape from bullies when social media exists. It’s a constant, it’s always there every hour of the day.
Obviously it's not the actual device that is the problem. The issues are stemming from the society, a very cruel, stupid and narcissistic society. Social media has allowed us to connect to basically ANYONE around the world, which by itself is a nice function. The difference is that when social media became so widely available, it was mostly used by older teenagers and adults. Now, it is part of every toddler's life if we include TikTok and other stuff in the category. They get thrown at so much (mis)information, negativity and lies that their brains simply cannot digest yet. Hence, it does harm to them in the long term.
It's been proven that poor mental health now in the younger generation is linked to social media, that's a fact you can look it up - not ALL cases but large percentage. Also, majority of bullying does happen online, from random effing strangers. So yeah, get off social media. The negatives out way the positives
Yes, it's invalidating to tell young people that all their problems would be fixed by putting down their phone when there are so many factors to consider. School life, family situation, physical and mental health, grief, addictions, stress, the world situation, the list goes on. They're trying to raise awareness, but making phones out to he some kind of disease has the opposite effect. Social media has negatives, but people are forgetting its benefits. I don’t think the people who made this understand how common it is for parents and adults to belittle their children's problems into something that can be solved so easily, and blame their phones for their issues.
@phoebecaulfield4062 Many. Here's one for you that took me two seconds to find. Quoting from an article from Healthline "A British research team isolated a gene that appears to be prevalent in multiple family members with depression. The chromosome 3p25-26 was found in more than 800 families with recurrent depression." "Scientists believe that as many as 40 percent of those with depression can trace it to a genetic link. Environmental and other factors may make up the other 60%" You clearly think people with mental illness should "just get over it" which shows a laughable lack of understanding and empathy so I doubt this will change your mind. It's kind of sad
Why kids put up wirh anything is beyond me they need parents who teach them how to take ownership of their lives instead of all the stupid listening empower them to think for themselves and nobody will ever be able to undermine
Parents who let their young kids have phones are morons. It’s not just about it’s effect on the attention and the risk of inappropriate content access but it’s also about the harmful effects of radiation.
Yeesh, seems like a miserable watch. Pass. Can't Winslet ever do something that isn't just miserable, depressing, about some godawful time in history, or some bloke hacking off his wang? She had this small window around 2003-04, otherwise it's been a brutal, harrowing, bummer of career choices. 'Wow, she cries and cries really well.'
Me and my mum absolutely sobbed to this programme, it was so incredibly relatable to me and this really was me before I deleted social media. Even just the pressure of being at school now is so much. I really wish that we just didn't have social media, it's what is RUINING our generation..
