It's just a comedy skit but Keaton flawlessly depicts how I am when it comes to publicly interacting with people. No exaggeration whatsoever. The awkwardness, instantly becoming overwhelmed for no reason, panicking over doing the simplest of tasks, hyperventilating... If you ever wonder what social anxiety is like just watch this sketch.
Its easy to overcome that ... but takes practice. Each time you go to a store, or anywhere in public, think of one question or comment to say or to ask. Usually, once you have 'an opener' the other person will carry the conversation ... if not, then you shake it off. The more you do the 'one question/comment', the easier it is to get to 2 or 3. Exp: "Is that an Apple Watch? Always wondered ... what does it do?" or, "That's a nice sweater. Mind if I ask what brand it is?' If you talk to one person each day like this ... its like melting ice. A couple months and you'll be looking for people to talk to. Life is too short to be so intimidated. 99% of the time, you'll never see these people again, so what does it matter?
I liked that they used to have skits just based on social situations and conditions almost making an observation like a short story. The first part of the skit was funny, but then they just ran the whole awkward thing into the ground. But I like that they did that. Some people are socially challenged and awkward. It’s part of the human condition. Some people are like this when they’re young and then escape. Others never do. Again, like these type of pieces. Keaton is a great actor.
When we mention to kids about things from the past, like Walkmen, Cassete Tapes, etc. We should mention that we used to have people employed to push buttons at elevators. This is not an easy one to explain.
@@thiagodeandrade7081 Sure but you have to go back a long way for those. I remember being a kid in a push button elevator, just like the one in the video, and having a worker there. :-) I guess it took time for the companies realize change was needed.
@@corujariousa When I was a kid (in Brazil), I have seen lift operators at one or two office buildings. For the old times USA, all I can say is, there was a lift operator at the ads company building on Madmen
Not to mention the days of no buttons, just the up and down handle and the manual doors. True fact: I still have my driver permit to "drive" an elevator from when I was a night maintenance man in B.-C.
Keaton is GREAT. There’s video of him and David Letterman on Mary Tyler Moore’s variety show and Dave has the ultimate “KILL ME NOW” look on his face while Keaton is beaming, laughing and dancing like the happiest clown you ever saw. Love this guy.
Kids today could seriously benefit from a class where you're forced to make person to person conversation with people. Could've used it in my high school to be honest.

I work with teenagers who are Developmentally Disabled, and he was a great example of how to help them learn basic social interactions...which are often their biggest challenge in employment.
Can people still get paid just for pushing elevator buttons and making small talk? I know doormen/women still exist. But their job involves security to a degree as well

It's unfathomable to me that you can't see them looking at the cards... But I'll help you out a bit. Often times they're not truly making eye contact with one another, they're looking over each other's shoulders at the cards. Besides, it's not difficult to do some research about SNL. They've been using cards since day 1 for every single sketch.
Throughout their whole run, they’ve had some actors who are really good at looking more natural. It might be that the best ones from older seasons are posted instead of most of them from the current season. But, you’re right-on some of these older ones, the acting’s so good you get caught up in the sketch and don’t even notice them reading their lines!
Lines actually change often in the last days of the show, including between dress and airing. All of them need to use cue cards to an extent, the only difference is some make it more obvious than others.
It's hard to believe that "Elevator man" was an actual job. It was so unnecessary because able-bodied people don't need someone to press the elevator buttons for them. It's like how at gas stations many years ago the guy working in the store would also pump the gas for the driver, check the car's engine oil and clean the windows. Things went from full service to self-service as time went which spelled the end for unecessary courtesy jobs.
The middle aged white elevator man stared at the buttons the whole ride , an inch away from his nose, if that, one time I had to ride an elevator in nyc’s ues.
