    I remember in 2nd grade my teacher had a jar and a bunch of blue beads, each time we had a good day she put a bead in the jar, if we got a certain number of beads we got a prize/treat. Also if there were certain people who got a certain good color got a ice cream! Always helped my class learn and behave. Hope this helps! Keep doing what your doing! 😊

    I agree with you on the "good class" and "bad class" thing. What we have tried to do at my school is at the end of every year each grade level is given a card for each student and we very generally rank them in literacy, math, behavior, and parental support. (Usually by putting a 1-4 by each area on that student's card, 1 being a weakness and 4 being strong) and we as a team divide the classes for next year. We evenly distribute the classes so that no one class has too many behaviors or academic weaknesses and so that each class has at least a couple of good parents in it. We also note which students do not need to be paired together and I think it has been quite helpful. Our administration is great at working with the teachers. Obviously new kids come in who we have no idea about but overall this helps.

      Whitney Adams we do this too!

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  7 років тому +12

      Surprisingly, we actually do this! We spend probably a good hour sorting the cards into classes for the next school year exactly the way you described! However, the problem is that our administration ends up honoring parent requests and students get moved around. The classes we set up almost never actually end up on the rosters. It ends up just being a waste of time which is sad.

    • @zelmaa5736

      We have the same problem of students being moved around. We also have the issue where we thought we were separating behaviour conflicts, only to put them together with other students who have been separated from THEIR conflicting students. It has reached a point where we simply have too many students to separate so some of them have to end up together and we don't know how that mix is going to work until the year gets going.

    • @TheANH34

    Never feel bad about rejoicing when the "difficult" kids are away. It is perfectly natural. We finally get to spend time with the other kids who have to put up with all of those behaviours. My Education Assistant, team teacher and I decided the other day that we need to work out some kind of reward for those good kids who miss out on so much when they have a number of kids in their class who stop them from learning.

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  7 років тому +4

      I have been thinking a lot about this as well! I definitely feel bad for those students that are always setting a good example and being so patient when there are behavior problems. I also need to find a way to reward them for their good behavior and spend some one-on-one time with them without the distractions! I've thought about having a special lunch bunch but I will let you know what I come up with!

      Pocketful of Primary I give out tickets. Students earn tickets for good grades, following directions, reading books, line behavior, etc... I literally buy a roll of carnival tickets every year. lol Students collect them and then can "buy" things. I have a list with prices posted. They have to buy before the morning announcements. Lunch w the teacher is on there. I also have sit in the rolly chair for a day, bring a stuffed animal or doll (super popular in third grade), use special pencil or pen for a day (I bought some cool pens at Target), VIP table, read to a K class (also popular). I can take a pic of the poster if you want. Treasure box is also on there which I dont re stock often but it has cool pencils, erasers, Target dollar section stuff. lol When I started this 3 yrs ago, it was so so popular. During the year I also auction off anchor charts, things I want to throw away (they love to take it home to play school). Oh and mid year I auction off all the stuff in the class lost and found (anything found on the floor). The kids save the tickets in a plain envelope I give them. Most keep it in their pencil pouch or home folder. They do not need to write their name on the tickets that way and you can re-use them. OH!!! and when anyone finds a pencil on the floor and it gets claimed, I make the one who lost it pay a ticket to get it back or of they forget to put their name on something... the desk fairy also gives out tickets. =)

      I find that the simplest thing makes a difference: instead of starting off with "Johnny, Zelda and Bobby - sit down and work!!!"; I say instead: thank you Phil for being on task! Oh! and you too Tommy, and Sam and Susie! Its amazing how MANY of the off-taskers come in line - its temporary sometimes, but it works and reinforces my good kids. If it starts up again, I tangibly reward the ones following directions/rules (place a little something on the corner of their desk). My Oppositional Defiant kiddo doesn't respond, but it definately works on the others - especially my ADHD kiddos who really want to behave - but "forget". These kids are 8th graders.

    I agree with you about student behaviour. I have been teaching for over 10 years and in 4 different countries and have worked with so many cultures. A difficult reality is sometimes no matter how much you vary your strategies for classroom management or how much you care students don't behave in an appropriate way. Sometimes their reality outside the classroom isn't giving them what they need the most and it is reflected in school. I have learned to be as consistent as possible and try hard to recognise their good effort or behaviours as much I can. At the end of the day, you know your class and not those people who use blanket statements about student behaviour.

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  7 років тому +39

      You are so right and I'm glad I'm not alone in this! I definitely agree that consistency helps a TON as does rewarding and commending good behavior. My biggest struggle with this group is that I have a couple students that want all of my attention (which I completely understand because I know they don't get a lot of love and attention at home). But there is no way I can give them each my full attention at all times and that is what causes them to act out. I try to have one-on-one lunch bunches with them as often as I can and have created individual behavior plans for them but they still act out as soon as the other student is getting my attention. Ugh! I love them to death but it is certainly exhausting! Thank you for taking the time to comment!

    As I was watching your video today, I kept on nodding my head in agreement. I have a class similar to yours 13 boys and 6 girls. Within my boys about 6 are behavior problems. I understand the talking and being silly cause their children, but it is the attitudes that get me when trying to correct their behaviors. Its the kicking and stomping and talking back that really bother me. That has nothing to do with what I am doing in the classroom. Those attitudes start at home. It gotten so bad that I am miserable about going to school, but I am trying to stay positive. Only 3 more weeks till spring break!

    Michelle i don't know if you'll see this. I was that problem child. The one who acted out despite all of the love and support I received ( my parents were as involved as they could be ) we later learned that my behavioral problems were due to general anxiety disorder and basically I was acting out because I felt that no one actually cared about me so it didn't matter. It took years of people assuring me that they truly care about me for it to even somewhat stick in my head. I don't know if that's the reason some of your kids were misbehaving but it's possible. What I needed and luckily recieved( I've had amazing teachers and professors ) is a consistent reminder that people care about me.

    • @tammysheppard6279
      @tammysheppard6279 7 років тому +1

      I have the same problem, only my fear of everyone actually hating me drove me to be a perfectionist. I worried that any small thing I would do, would make all my fears come true, or worse I was the cause of it. I think children with anxiety really benefit from close teacher relationships. I did best with teachers who took the time to get to know me, make me feel extra special and convince me (as much as they could), that they actually did care about me. I had a teacher actually let me sit by a specific friend, just because I talked to them about my life.

    I like the Valentine's gifts for your man. Love the ideas for 100th day. You made a wonderful "young-old" granny.
    I agree with you, some students should not be in the same class together, and there are years which you just have a misbehaving class.
    Negative student behavior is and will always be difficult to handle. I'm in my 11 yr of teaching and I am also trying to find ways to handle the negative behavior without handing out consequence to the entire group. Unfortunately, I am the teacher that receives students with difficult behavior...like they start off in another teacher's room and the principal ends up putting them in my room. I think he believes it's acknowledging I have awesome classroom management however, it brings me down. This is my third consecutive year, at this school ( same thing happed at my previous school), receiving a student from another classroom due to negative behavior. I didn't have behavior problems until I received this student two months into the school year. He sets off four other students and all I want to do is scream from the top of my lungs in the hallway "WHY ME!" Yes, he is doing better with me but it's more work for me and I hate it! Don't get me wrong, I am glad the student is doing better but I wish to have a year in which I have a decent behaved class (no such thing as a perfect well behave class).

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  7 років тому +2

      I know exactly what you mean! There are definitely schools where they place all the behavior "problems" on one teacher and I personally think it is incredibly unfair. The other teachers will not be able to grow their classroom management without having the experiences with these behavior problems and the teacher who has them all is going to get burnt out more quickly. However, it must be a great feeling knowing that you are one of the few teachers that can handle those students and create a better future for them. I definitely feel for you and wish you the best of luck finishing your year! Fingers crossed that you get a better class next year!

    Pocketful of Primary.......... Please don''t ever feel bad about your honest sharing of words about students in your classroom. I, too, have taught at similar school sites with difficult behaviors for the last 18 years. It definitely is very difficult working day-in and day-out with similar behaviors playing out almost daily in the classroom. And if you don't receive outside support, the frustration compounds for sure. Thanks for your honest comments because you are connecting with many educators that can relate and thoroughly understand. My heart goes out to you! Hang in there and don't stop sharing your honest experiences! You're doing an outstanding job with your blog, so I encourage you to keep honest and do continue to express freely your experiences. I always look forward to watching your days as a teacher. My class falls apart in the afternoons too. My theory is it's the food the kids are eating at lunch. Lots of processed food and sugar and chemicals in their foods that make them crazy. One of the reasons why I love your videos so much is because you are so real and you share all of these things. In fact, I've had some really rough days and have remembered your videos and your attitude towards everything and it makes me feel so much better.

    I'd LOVE weekend vlogs!!! Hope you're feeling better! Lots of crud going around down here. It got me down for a couple of weeks. Bleh!
    I love the idea of doing anchor charts at home. I brought home paper a few years ago but never do it. Though anchor charts always end up on my to-do list. I think I'll dig through my office and find it this weekend. Thanks!
    I really appreciate the reminder at the end. I agree with you 100%. Sometimes it's hard to remember in the moment and easy to get down on yourself. Thanks again for your candor and passion! :)

    Also, I agree with what you're saying about good classes and bad classes. I switch classes in fourth grade, so I have three completely different classes. If certain kids are in the same class, they feed off of each other.

    I stumbled onto your channel and have been inspired with how real you are with your job, your feelings and your kids. I am currently a school bus driver going to school to be a teacher. I liked this video because you went out of your way to have fun with your kids. The last 3 years I dressed up as santa at christmas. So my kids all ride the bus on the last day of school before christmas break because they know I'll be dressed up. This year I went as the Grinch in the santa costume and the kids loved it. Keep up the good work. I'm not sure what you are doing now (because the last video I can tell you were not looking forward to teaching anymore) but you've been inspiring to me so far.

      Jeannie Weasly It is sad that nothing is done. When I was student teaching in a gifted 1st grade class, this little boy threw chairs, cursed at us, got into fights, and put everyone in danger. We constantly asked the principal to remove him from that class but she said no. That happened for the rest of the year and I felt horrible for the kids that wanted to learn but were always distracted and fearful of him. The system really does fail us most of the time...

    I had a student in 3rd grade who got mad at me for benching him at recess and so what he did made me want to pull out my hair also, he broke my grandfather's jar filled with marbles on my teacher desk in the beginning of the next school day, he pushed it onto the floor when I wasn't looking and it shattered on the floor and everyone was shocked, and I got SO MAD!!! Because of what he did he had to go to the principals office and he was sent home for the day! That was my only thing from my grandfather that I still had of his legacy and that student that broke it had lost their mind and made me want to cry for the entire day!!! It is now gone because of that student I had and it still hurts me to this day because it was a gift from my grandfather.

    I just wanted to let you know that you have been such a huge inspiration to me the past several months... I am currently in my first year of teaching and I have a class that I feel is almost completely unmanageable at times. We had several new students who, if we had more behavioral background information on them, would definitely not have been placed in the same room. Most days it feels like total crowd control. I spend several nights feeling as if there is nothing that can be done and even questioning my career path. It is a huge struggle simply with it also being my first year on top of everything else. However, when you talk about the behaviors that you deal with, it makes me feel as if I'm not alone. I can tell that you put every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears that you have into this. You are an amazing teacher. To see a teacher who is in their third year go through the same things I am gives me hope. I completely agree with your statement that sometimes there will be those students that you just won't be able to reach to the fullest potential and that is (in a very odd way) okay. A lot of times I feel as if I can't confide in other teachers because their struggles are not the same as mine. That is why I love watching your vlogs. I finally feel like I have a real person to cry with, even though you don't know me at all! I can tell that your passion is what gets you through these difficult times and seeing that is so refreshing. It helps remind me that I will get through this and not only will my teaching/management improve but every year is something new to embrace. I am very grateful that I came across your channel and I can't wait to continue watching you grow as a teacher, just as I will.

    We all have one of those years in which you try everything under your sleeve, and for some reason, it does not work. Sometimes is the mix of students that you have that particular year. Unfortunately, that is my colleague's situation this year. As soon as I saw your "Ketchup and Pickles," I had to share it with her. On Friday afternoon, we have our "Ketchup and Pickles. Now, all students who have had bad behavior or have not finished their work, go to her class. Then, ones who finished their work and have had good behavior during the week, come to mine." Students love it! Most of the behavior problem kids stay in her room, but there have been a few who have worked hard and were able to join my class. Thank you!!! I love your ideas.

    Amen for behaviour problems chat. I had a boy in my last classroom (where I simply had to leave because it was that difficult) who would have tantrums at any time of the day where he would throw furniture, laptops and scream at the top of his lungs. At home he was told that woman were inferior and that teachers were just in it for the paycheck. Both parents were abusive towards each other. This was never aimed at me, and apparently I was doing a "really good" job with him. You are completely right, you can try your hardest but sometimes there are children who are really difficult and are being fed things from home.
