Hey Walter... GREAT REVIEW! In fact, it was your video that convinced me to go out and get my own Traps a400 Kit (got a GREAT DEAL on ebay on an open box, but brand new kit). Here's a few of my observations... 1. I had the same problem with the rattling coming from the floor tom. Then I moved it all the way up to the top of the sidebar and the rattle went away. 2. Although the included snare sounds great, cross sticking on the Traps Snare is difficult (though not impossible), but the stand will accommodate a much larger snare and I had a 13" piccolo snare laying around that I now use with the kit. Problem solved. 3. DON'T get the cymbals that come with the kit. They're below average at best. Get the kit, sans cymbals, and then look for some good used ones. 4. It looks like Walter is using the original Traps Heads that came with the kit (which are basically REMO Pin Stripes) and they're just fine. I plan on beating mine up for a while longer and then replacing 'em with some Evans heads... 5. One of the biggest difficulties I had was in getting the Kick drum to sound the way I wanted it (although, when you mic it up, it sounds pretty darned good). Then, I got an idea... I cut a 5" porthole in the resonant head and stuck in a draft guard for a door that I got an Amazon for $11 and change, and the thing sounds like a million bucks. (Here's the draft guard I use... It fit's perfectly >> www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RUMZHE?creativeASIN=B000RUMZHE&linkCode=w00&linkId=QUKDJE3P5PIUQFFF&ref_=as_sl_pc_tf_til&tag=theproscata-20 ) Finally... These things sound GREAT live, and they're so much easier to lug around than a full sized kit... and setting up in 10 minutes doesn't suck either. Thanks again, Walter... And Cheers! ヅ
The kick is the trickiest, for sure: it is missing the most shell to resonate compared to the other drums. However proper mic'ing and eq'ing helps bring out the low end that is lacking. Compression is also a big help. (on all the drums; see vid above). In an un-mic'd situation I would likely use an 18 inch real kickdrums instead of the Traps kickdrum. Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the question, I forgot to mention the cymbals. The original owner purchsed the "upgrade" Paiste 101s or something. Like the hi-hat stand and kick pedal, fine for beginners but I don't use them. When I first jammed on the kit with a bassist, we both noted that my cymbals were now noticeable louder than the drums. In an un-mic'ed setting, cymbal dampening is a good option.
Walter Diamond. You sir are one real dude. Thanks for the awesome review. Been looking for portable kit for some time and i think I've just made my as to which one I'm going to get. Thanks a ton
Been playing 54 years still am and just taken delivery, not gigged with em yet bought bought them because off setting up stripping down Pearl vision getting a ball ache, you have given me the confidence to give it a go.great review.
The truth is just as you said in the beggining - drummers don't know how to tune. I have Traps A400 kit, with remo ambassador heads and it sounds like a dream. No duct tape no stuffing, just good tuning :) Traps A400 is a really good kit :)
Hay man, seriously great video, thanks so much. Just a quick question.. I have been playing in a large band for many years with my yamaha stage custom kit but have recently begun a small twopiece blues band and want a smaller kit. I have experience tuning but would not be using the microphones or mixer like you.. would you still reccommened the traps a400? Cheers - Toby
Great video. I know you briefly mentioned on the video but could you please list all the mics that you use again (didn't mention model of AKG) - would be helpful - thanks!
For jamming, I think an un-mic'd Traps kit would fit the bill fine. In live settings, most venues have at least 2 (hopefully more) drum mics, so you could get away with it. Or, like I commented above, use the Traps kit with a real acoustic kick. In any event, buy a kit. Damn cheap and well worth having around. Tell Traps Walter Diamond sent you. (I'm selling more of these kits than Guitar Center, I swear.)
I own one. Bought new in 2009, the only problem about the kit is that is doesn't have any add-ons, I would like to add 2 toms more. Excellent playing, keep drumming
quattro4s Hi ! Just to inform you that now you can purchase add-ons. Where are U from ? Shot me an e-mail at : traps-france"at"gmx"dot"fr and tell me what you're looking for ;-)
Hi quattro4s ... Actually, there are accessories available, including extension, extra drums, replacement parts and a lot more. Just go here >> www.trapsdrums.com/product-category/acoustic-range/acoustic-accessories/ But even if you don't use the traps stuff, per se... the rack is standard sized and the same thing used by Yamaha, etc., so it's easy to put on some extras and add ons. Traps sells an 8" tom for about $100, but I decided to pick up a set of Roto Toms for about the same price on Amazon, so I ended up with 3 extra drums for the price of one. Here's the ones I got, and they're great! >> www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00808PNEC?creativeASIN=B00808PNEC&linkCode=w00&linkId=L6O3AJOKNHOXOT2Z&ref_=as_sl_pc_tf_til&tag=theproscata-20 Hope this help... Cheers! ヅ
Walter, thanks for the detailed review. I bought my Traps set based, in part, on this review. I'm curious if you managed to solve the squeaks and rattles yet? The noise from the 14" tom seems the worst, but I get some from the 12" tom as well. The bouncing up and down of the 14" tom is also disconcerting. It gets to be like a little trampoline. The clamping mechanism allows a little bit of rotation, no matter how tightly you screw in the wingnut. I'd love to hear if you came up with fixes
I just got my Traps today as my first drumset. But what exactly were you saying about tuning the drums? I don't quite understand, and I don't want to ruin them early on. Plus, if I can get them to sound like yours, that's a win.
I discoverd Traps only today and I am THRILLED with the concept! Perfect for clubs and hauling around. I am researching into their electronic set. I would think when triggered to VST or a good drum module one would get a very cost-effective alternative. And Walter - your playing is great. I think you are a Dennis Chambers fan. Cheers!
Do they come with mesh heads too for silent playing? That's really what I want. They do sound pretty nice though. Your tuning works well with the style you're doing here. How would they handle a heavier style of music where one might normally go the JAW route?
You gotta admit though...this guy makes those drums sound good...he's right on the money with his drumming and his has excellent tempo and rhythm...you can tell he is a pro If I played those drums it would sound like a broken set of pots and pans!
From the videos on this kit, I thought they were crap.. until now. :) Just FYI though, if you start putting electric pad triggers on the stand, be prepaired for a crosstalk and false triggering nightmare. Just a tap on the stand of my TD-12 kit will trigger several pads.
Um, whenever i hit the left tom, the snare (if snared ofc) will rattle pretty annoyingly, I can't hear that in this though? But on mine it practically is muted out from the snare :S? Did you get this?
Well done review. Honest to goodness. I'm actually planning on saving up for a portable kit and your review just convinced me how much worth an investment this kit can be. Thanks! =]
Dang those sound incredible! It'd just be great if I could get the drums alone, recently purchased a Gibraltar rack so I wouldn't have much need for the rack that comes with it aside from holding up the kick drum.
Great review! I have the e400 that i'm going to convert to the a400. What type of drumheads do you recommend? You still use the ones that came with it?
Hello, fabulous drumming, you've got the rhythm! I'm looking for a cheap beginner drum set to learn jazz drumming, i like the quieter sound of these, and i want a kit ideally that I can pack away when not playing. Would you recommend these and what would you change? Kick pedal, hit hat, symbals etc to give you a nice jazz drummer sound for the standard kit. Andrew London UK
I just purchased this kit, somewhat based on your review. Nice review, and nice chops. While unpacking the kit, the snare strainer came pre-broken. Of course, I am getting it resolved, as it is new, but have you had any luck resolving your snare strainer issues? This is obviously a very poor design. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for that. I got the one without cymbals. I'm a guitarist planning to learn some drums. What are the cheapest half decent cymbals you can recommend for this? The full version of this kit comes with Sabian B8 cymbals 16" crash and 13" hi-hats.
THis demo is awesome! To your point about drummers not being able to tune, I would disagree with that. Beginning drummers certainly may not know how to tune drums. But more advanced players should know how to do this. Also muffling is a personal preference, so someone might put duct tape on the snare and toms. some might not. I, personally, would not. The overall sound is quite good. I'm thinking about getting one of these kits myself. Can't do mics or a good mixer just yet, but like I said I'm definitely looking at this. Good job!!!! :)
fantastic .....personally I hate "boomy " big sounds ...I like the tight sound and reduced volume ...as it makes it more controllable and not a wrestling match with other musicians ......great playing - great demo , thanks .....I have just found my next kit ! Greetings from Australia .
My bass sound like shit too. I dont know its suppose to sound like that but in the video it sound good.I did everything i could to inprove the sound but they still sound weird. If you have any tips plz reply
@shutthehellup6666 yh i want to play metal like devildriver or lamb of god and i obv would need to get some different skins know any good uns that sound deep but dont ring out at all????
Ha! I had intended to email you about this but hadn't yet. Anywy feel free to link this video on your website; the jazz drummer link you have is a good start, but the audio is far from exemplary. I'd love to hear any plans you have for future kits. Upgrades, additional sizes, etc. And I'm not against shamless attempts to score free "test" equipment to provide you with valuable user feedback... :D
I bought one myself just because I never had the space or budget to buy a real drum set. But the only problem I have with it is I don't think these are worth 800 dollars more around 300
Hey man thinking about getting this kit... thanks for this review. Quick question. Do you think i could use this set for a live gig? Im in a rock band. Thanks
PhatDrummer12 Yes you can ! It changes everything to be able to carry an entire acoustic drums kit in 1 time ! Once you mike it up (at least BD if it's in a very little place) no one can make the difference with a "normal" kit. Check our web TV on "dai ly motio n" (and look for "traps france") you'll find many vids with different mikings and music styles. Feel free to send me an e-mail at : traps-france "at" gmx "dot" fr. i'll answer to every question you may ask.
Hi PhatDrummer12 ... You can DEFINITELY use this kit for a live gig. I've done it often and LOVE using these live. They travel easy and they'll sound great, yet you won't blow your bandmates off the stage. Just be ready for the jealous stares when they see that you are now the guy with the shortest set up/tear down times. ;)
Walter - It would be great to see you go over a master class in tuning/mic'ing & mixing b/c reviews of these either sound horrible b/c its a dude who spent zero time on tuning (forget mic's and mixer) -- or -- I hear these drums sound like high end customs. So, few questions, Do the toms onl y have a batter (top) head? I swear that is how they look but I can't tell. Do you have any dampers on the toms or the kick? How does the snare with snares off sound? Are you using any of the cymbals that came with thhe kit. If so, can you tell me what comes with it and if you kept it or not and just how terrible it sounded or hopefully how not terrible it sounded. Are you still on the original heads on all drums & whats your thoughts on the origianls? I heard you mention that you traded out the stock kick hardware but I didn't hear what you said you are using. Thanks mate!
The toms only have the batter head. Snares off: 3:34 The included cymbals are ass, but they sell a version without cymbals. The original Remo heads are fine but imho a set of Evans 360 double coated heads sound way better.
Good reveiw, helped me decide that these are up to scratch on the sound quality, will probably be investing in one myself. Out of interest, Im assuming that the cymbols you have are not the ones that it came with
They sounds pretty good once mic'd and mixed. I have played this kit on it's own and it sounds horrible in my opinion. You make them sound pretty damn good here though. Again, just an opinion, Nothing beats a solid quality drum kit!
Good, honest review. I've been drumming for more than 30 years (gee, you think I'd be great by now :-) and I love what this kit can do so much that I built a site to sell it: Drum Or Die (dot com). Keep on drumming, brother. ~Mark
Aah, realistically though, your mics prolly cost whattt, an extra grand on top of the set, and you have to replace all the cymbals, as well as you've added your own, the mixer is another 400-500, Can't possibly consider this good value for how much effort you have to put in to make a percussion set sound good.
Old Zildjian new beats, nothing special. Paddioche nails it below; of course they don't sound "just" like real drums, they're not "real" drums per se. But tuned properly and with good mics and signal processing you can make a hell of a good kit with these; further, you CANNOT pick up and carry a comparable 5 piece maple or birch (or any wood) drum kit by yourself in it's entirety and fit it in the back of your Four Runner undisassembled.(Minus cymbal booms and cymbals.)

Really the best most accurate review I've seen for a traps kit! I think I'm off to buy one...

Best demo of this thing out there

wow.....this made the drums sound SO much better than what i thought! Defintely gonna buy these asap!
Watched just now and I like it. They sound great.
Definitely considering buying a set after watching your demo. Sounding great!
The truth is just as you said in the beggining - drummers don't know how to tune.

Thanks.

Got mine in 2020! They sound great!
I want one but its hard to find one 😣

dude would u be able to put the 12" set up as a floor tom??? also i play metal and rock are these good kits for that? thanks
Nice drumming ..dude !!
i m planning to buy this drum set but i m living in an apartment. Do u think it s still too lund for an apartment ?
Dang those sound incredible! It'd just be great if I could get the drums alone, recently purchased a Gibraltar rack so I wouldn't have much need for the rack that comes with it aside from holding up the kick drum.

Hi I recently got a traps a400 drum kit and I just can't tune them! I was wondering if you would mind making a tuning tutorial video for them. Thanks
how musch does a set of these run?
awesome. I just wish they sold just a tom pack. I'd by that in a heartbeat.
if u ever wanna sell those maples i might want them..i like both styles..i never tried the traps before yet i might get a pair they sound fabulous..
This boy can play !!!!!! you go man
Are these as loud as a normal acoustic drum kit?
How would this kit be as a double-bass kit with my full-sized Yamaha kit?
are they as noisy as a real kit or can u play inside whitout desturbing anybody?
How do You tune themmmmm?????????????
p.s. you should upload a video on tuning. that would be a big help to many I"m sure
is there anyway to convert it to left hand?
THis demo is awesome! To your point about drummers not being able to tune, I would disagree with that. Beginning drummers certainly may not know how to tune drums. how much are the mics and the mixer ?
Wat if you put some better skins on????
sounds sweet mate, nice playing, are ur hats istanbul?
fantastic .....personally I hate "boomy " big sounds ...I like the tight sound and reduced volume ...as it makes it more controllable and not a wrestling match with other musicians ......great playing - great demo , thanks .....I have just found my next kit !
Anywy feel free to link this video on your website; the jazz drummer link you have is a good start, but the audio is far from exemplary.

dude are they any good for metal like lamb of god/devildriver
How is this with a double kick pedal
Wanna sell any of those kits in your garage? Haha nice review! I wish I could just have an hour with that kit to put in my work(;
I bought one myself just because I never had the space or budget to buy a real drum set. But the only problem I have with it is I don't think these are worth 800 dollars more around 300
Good review and well tuned.. appreciate it mate!!
that kit sounds sick

They remind me of the PuerCussion sets that were around about 20 years ago.
I can't make my traps bass sound that good. What bass head do u use!
double bass pedal sounds good on this drum??
oh did u add your own cymbals..the traps sound perfect..
kit sounds good, but you have high end mics, that helps
youre one heck of a drummer
The above is in response to many comments below, BTW.
how much???
@SiameseDream4321 He said about 400 bucks or so.
is this durable?
can i get ur pearl set plz
@ParsoProductions no, just mics!
They sounds pretty good once mic'd and mixed. I have played this kit on it's own and it sounds horrible in my opinion. You make them sound pretty damn good here though. Again, just an opinion, Nothing beats a solid quality drum kit!
wait can you use an amp with these traps anyone..anyone..????
i just bought one and it sounds nothing like this.. bass drum sound nothing like bass drum.. what have i done wrong, man.

I'm going to have a tough decision buying a kit now...
@ThaBlunt420 That is the proper way.
Specifically the toms, thanks.
At first, I thought this video was being narrated by Microsoft Sam.
are these drums like triggered or something?
Wow...THE SOUND IS GOOD! ESP THE SNARE! :O
I know the next kit i'm getting :)
