  • I talk with Grammy award-winning guitarist and singer Chris “Critter” Eldridge. A regular collaborator of Julian Lage’, Critter has also lent his talents to Paul Simon, Justin Timberlake, T-Bone Burnett, Fiona Apple, The War and Treaty and more.
We discuss the necessity of discomfort as a prerequisite for growth and how raising a daughter has opened up new insights about failure and its role in personal development. We also got into some bluegrass stuff, discussing the Murder Ballad in traditional music and whether the time has come to retire it. I have a pretty strong opinion on this.
Lastly I sat in with the gifted guitarist on a few songs - his arrangement of Little Sadie, and then we just let one rip with a tune we got from a Norman Blake record, Walking Cane Blues.

Critter, how can we cater to one persons needs and take away from the art 99% of people enjoy? Little Sadie forever. Doc Watson forever. Despite anyone’s sensitivity.

1:09:00 The saying goes that if you forget history you’re doomed to repeat it, but that somewhat implies that people know history, and very few truly do. The statement should just be that history repeats itself, which Critter sort of alluded to.

Love that Tony-esque intro on Little Sadie.
I loved this interview! Thank you for it!
I really hope murder ballads don't get cancelled. They make me feel in touch with something old and different from me.

Murder Ballads are fine, but don't play no drinking songs. :)

Validity of horror and the shadow self are all well and good but the issue that these blokes overlook is the gendered nature of the violence depicted in murder ballads. It’s always men killing women and it’s the male characters story we get to hear, all we know of little Sadie is that she is brutally murdered for no reason. It’s not murder that’s the issue but gender based domestic violence.
That said I love Critter and think this is a great interview. He is obviously an open minded guy who values personal growth so I hope he continues to grapple with these issues and continues to be open to other perspectives, particularly those of his female fans.

What an interesting podcast. There are hundreds of crime songs in many genres. I am new to flatpicking & there is so much there. This guy brings a stunning tone to that guitar.
