- Drove a couple hours to Lebanon Valley Dragway to race my old man in his 440 4spd Mopar. He hadn't been racing in almost 20 years!
I had PCM tune and suspension issues but made improvements every run. I'm making a couple more tweaks and going to go back next weekend before they shut down for the year.
We found out the Roadrunner is a big ol turd. Big block trapping 87 is pretty sad. Don't know that I'd call that a "muscle car"! haha

That Road Runner is a really special car. First year, and adheres to the concept Chrysler had for the car. The cheaper coupe body, taxi cab interior, and all the frills and luxury of a holding cell. And I'm not playing favorites because he's also Papa Woody.

The Roadrunner was a cool concept back in the 60s. But it does also really show how times change. 440 got smoked by the lowest HP LS ever produced.
@@GEARHEADdezign I don't know the origin of that particular 440, but I can tell you that it absolutely didn't come in that car from the factory. The 440 4bbl was never offered in a Road Runner, and for '68 the only optional engine was the Hemi. That engine could be from a '77 Winnebago and the fact that it got out run by the Beretta says more to me about how bad that 440 is than how good the LS in the Berretta is. I'd also be curious to know the weight of both cars. The B body tended to be around 3800lbs. Nothing against the LS, it's got to be the most prolific V8 in history, but I'd say that OBD data capability is probably it's only true advantage. You can get peak power a lot easier because the computer will tell you everything, whereas with an old school carb motor, you have to figure out what components work well together, and if anything is off, you've got to figure it out through trial and error.
There are plenty of 440 powered B body Dodges and Plymouths that would show the Beretta nothing but tail lights. The Cars and Zebras channel features cars that run a FAST set up, factory appearing, stock tire, and there are 440 4bbl cars running mid to high 13s on Redlines and Polyglas F-70s. And that series doesn't allow anything but old school mods Just upping the intake to a factory Six Barrel set up will put them into 12.5s all day long, still on bias ply tires. And to be fair, there's a nearly endless list of mods for any LS.
That 440 sounds okay, but not great, and unless it was originally a Magnum, TNT, or a Super Commando, it was never intended to do anything but lug around a C body, pickup, or a motorhome. The internals are identical from non performance Chrysler big blocks and the HP versions except for the cam profile, and as the FAST series proves, there's a lot of basic, old school mods that can be done to any musclecar era engine to wake them up. On Engine Masters they took a motor home 383, bored out to 394 and got 440 hp out of it with an RPM manifold, headers, an 850 Holley and MSD ignition.
Major credit to pops for still being out there giving it hell, too.
Oh for sure, that 440 isn't optimized and you could do a lot to help it out pretty easily. But that's still a factory truck 293 (the weakest LS ever) putting out a lot more power.
My car is 3200 without me in it, and I wouldn't call it optimized either. I had the timing band-aided to only 20 degrees. I've made adjustment to antisquat and changed the tune to 27 degrees...and I'm going to see if it will tickle 12s next weekend. With zero internal engine modifications.
The reason everyone has jumped on the LS bandwagon is price (I bought my truck engine running with wiring harness for $350) and the strength of the bottom end. A bone stock LS will live at 800hp under boost app day long...with plenty of people over 1000. Technology has come a long way, and it's just a superior design.

Fun times my first car was a beretta i sold it with 300k miles . you should get a wired obd2 also flashing while connected to a voltage converter is a bad idea, I have bricked pcm's that way.
I have an OBDX on order, supposed to be 4x faster. I'm also going to rewire my plug. I'm wondering if the switched 12v at the port is a circuit that goes to "sleep".
I've done about 40 flashes and bricked one PCM, but was also to save it by grounding one terminal and then using LS Droid.

@@GEARHEADdezign what did you figure out? I left a comment I believe on Facebook saying I had issues with my brothers corvette and it was burst knock but that was with Hp tuners. I have used pcm hammer/tuner pro and it works just seems more difficult to navigate and I have ran into a few quirks
@@LynnTwinCustoms513 it was "spark smoothing" which is only active on manual trans tunes. My base tune is 99-02 T56 Camaro. I disabled it and now it's giving me the commanded spark from the table

I think you have plenty of anti squat (it smacks the tire SO hard) Need more compression dampening in the back. Looked like a fun day. Oh yeah the shift light is for BOOMERS.
Yeah I took antisquat out and it feels better. My speedway coilover shocks are pretty light but I'm too cheap for the good stuff

Shift light is a motorcycle turn signal controlled by PCM. Tach reacts so slow. I don't remember my 91 tach being so bad.
