I found an easy solution to the sentry drone problem way back in the 90s. Find the config file, open it, cut the drone‘s health in half, save file. Just balanced the game.
or you know, just revert the behavior back to lameduke's own behavior with drones, they still explode, sure, but at least they shoot you instead of zooming and blowing up in your face
Sentry drone was basically the lost souls for Duke Nukem. They are meant to be a pain in the ass. Most enemies in Duke 3D dont give the player a sense of danger. Sentry drones should be sporadic at least
The newest version of DN3Doom has new SSG sprites that look way better imo (I'm the one who implemented them for the mod, but the one who drew the sprites is LossForWords uwu)

Duke Nukem may be imprisoned by the unnamed party-magician. But one day we will have a perfect doom mod that allows us to play the infinite supply of doom map packs with the king himself and keep his legend going. Hopefully with less sentry drones though.
The sentry drone is such an odd choice of enemy, especially for Duke. Never known anyone who actually liked it. It's so binary, either you killed it or them in time, or they blown you up and kill you. It's such a binary enemy, its either 0 or 1.. With some coding knowledge it could be turned into something better, a drone that flies around shoot at you instead.
IMHO the worst thing about them is how they can actively avoid projectile weapons like the rocket launcher or the devastator. And they also got way too much health, at least in Duke 3D, don't know about this mod.
hell, iirc, the beheaded kamikazes from Serious Sam won't even oneshoot you. At least one single one won't. They rely in there being so many of them that you will run out of magazine ammo before you get rid of them And even then, they have very little hp and start chain reactions where one explodes and blows up others
@@migueeeelet Exactly and the maps were also a lot bigger, and you have the audio queue long time in advance, they didnt just spawn around the corner and run straight into your face. The headless screaming guys in Serious Sam are actually kinda cool.
I'm glad to see this looks a lot more balanced in gameplay. Recently I tried the Don Ramon mod, and nearly tore my VERY short buzzed hair out over how unbalanced the combat felt. Something that makes the Duke in Doom experience a bit less infuriating is what I'm looking for!
So uh, this actually somewhat works with Chex Quest. Keycards and Zorch (ammo) pickups don't work, but you can easily work around that with CCs. Impressed, this is a really well made mod.

or maybe i know that Hideous Destructor has a really high learning curve than most mods in the doom community, the mod still has it's own issues with balance regarding to the bleeding mechanic and the mini-heart attack, plus the speed that you usually go isn't the same, it feels 3x slower that i have to crank up turbo to make walking suck less, it is enjoyable when you know what you're doing and if you're playing with friends that are familiarized with it, but overall it's not so enjoyable with the present problems.

If the only goal was to make Doomguy "human", you could simply reduce his health. The problem isn't the learning curve, it's that there are no intuitive mechanics. Once you know the controls and have a basic idea of how to respond to various injuries... it still makes no sense, but it's playable. Therein lies the trouble: once you know how to play you realize it's not very good. And so, it is through flagellation that HD players atone.

Here's how I'd improve the Sentry Drones without deleting them intirely; Take away their ability to dodge projectiles and make them super vulnerable to explosives like the Octobrains.

The mod itself works like a charm, but I am a bit at a loss when it comes to the texture pack. Tried to play with Slade a little bit, but could not get textures and flats to be applied and, if they did, they would come out distorted. The few tutorials either on forums or youtube were not helpful and, without them, it feels like you need to be quite knowledgeable on map creation to add them to your game. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

Even though they're still a pain, the sentry drones aren't kicking my ass nearly as hard as they were in lunar apocalypse. Maybe it's just because the chaingun gets twice the ammo and fires faster than duke3d. That or scythe isn't throwing nearly as many of them at me as other .wads do

I'm trying to run that Ultimate Doom 2 WAD, but the game freezes when I start a new game. My script is "gzdoom -iwad Doom2.wad -file ultdoom2-dv2.84.wad". Is this right? I've tried omitting "-file", the same result.
This is so wrong it's not even funny. Marauders are easy once you learn how to deal with them. The Sentry Drone is not complex enough to have a "right way" to deal with them, it's pretty much all Luck/Level Design/Reaction. It's a coin flip, with relatively little skill involved and a big chance of failure. The Marauder on the other hand is a chump if you know how to play. I'm not that great at games, I'm not a fucking pro, but I can most definitely beat the marauder on nightmare without losing a single extra life. Just keep your distance, fire only when you see and hear the green flash, and utilize quick swapping between SSG and Ballista, and he will be dead in less than a minute. Running from him while you clear out all the other heavies is not hard either.
The former appears one at a time in big/open areas, can be murdered in less than three seconds without a scratch, don’t kill you in one hit, can be executed for some catharsis, and don’t explode upon death. The latter appears in cramped quarters where you can barely move, can come in swarms (or worse, appear from around a blind corner,) can insta-kill you in a big, powerful, explosion upon death, and only leaves a sense of dread upon its demise due to the prospect of either more of them lurking in the darkness or being finished off by other enemies. ... I’d rather take on the former.
Duke in Doom doesn't work, the game didn't have overwhelming amounts of enemies all packed into one area. They were spread throughout the levels. maybe a mod that puts DOOMGUY in the shoes of Duke, DUKEGUY!
Any plans to review meatgrinder v2 on Extra Violence? It's just Ultra Violence with roughly 3 times more fodder tier enemies, but it's an absolute blast, especially on slaughter maps.

Plus the noise they made and always came in packs Sentry drones can be tricked into running into doors and walls which is funny. Both are annoying but spawns win hands down Now how about a mod with both of them in it?
@@kingofzombies23 Personally, I never had much trouble with Spawns. A couple of shots from the super nailgun put them down, and if you catch them early, you can usually take the whole crowd out in a chain explosion before they start going nuts.

You're meant to deal with sentry drones by closing the door so they can suicide into them, but you can't really do that here making them a thousand times worse to deal with

This is the best Duke Nukem for DOOM so far, though Don Ramon's Duke mod weapons only is alot of fun.

You should ask in the zandronum/gzdoom discord, though beware, the mods are sensitive to light, and just about everything else.

Doom Eternal has the Marauder and Duke Nukem 3D has the Sentry Drone.
At least the marauder has the excuse of being a mini-boss.

You're meant to deal with sentry drones by closing the door so they can suicide into them, but you can't really do that here making them a thousand times worse to deal with
Sentry Drone's should have replaced Pain elementals. At least they wouldn't be numerous on most maps
The fov changing on shooting the doublebarrel is really obnoxious. Surprised it didn't get noted. I guess it's just against me.

I think there was another mod that has that name, I think there's also a person who was involved in the making of the Trailblazer mod that goes by the username of Doom Nukem but I could be wrong.

Gorillas look less out of place than the snake, thats for damn sure. Never seen either of those enemies before.

I have no problems with sentry drones. My nightmare fuel is protozoid slimers.

I blame Randy Pitchford for the development of the sentries. Sure it could have been someone else but I like to make things easy. So I'm blaming Randy "Bo-Bandy" "Greasy squirt loving bastard" Pitchford...the second.

Can someone explain to me how to install the duke3d texture pack? I mean how to get it to work? It's not *.pk3 file, only folders named "textures" and "flats". I am using gzdoom. Please help
