    So.....I had the Core for about 4 months. I'm pretty sure I got it last August and got rid of it in December. I did like it, I even signed up to be a Beta Tester, which was cool. I'm worship leader at church, so singing and playing guitar. Guitar is Stereo into FOH...so, why did I get rid of it you ask? The community, or more accurately, how it doesn't exist. Even to the point where the main players in the preset purchasing world (ToneJunkie, Worship Tutorials, Tone Factor, etc) have pretty much abandoned the thing. The Prime/Core firmware is just over a year old, and they seem OK with updates, but feature priorities are a little skewed. When I was beta testing for the last major update, I tested the firmware for about 3 months....it wasn't released, publicly until after I got rid of it. Everything seemed to work fine to me, and the forums had very little in bug reporting, so I'm not sure why it was taking so long. Theu included some nice features in the update, but it seemed like their main priority was synth stuff....which didn't really interest me, or about 99% of the people using the Prime/Core.
    What I LOVED about the core....the play along feature. You can essentially load backing tracks onto the device and play them through a separate output...so, if there are folks out there looking at backing track options, this would work. It really was an "all in one" solution for me, tracks, vocals, and guitar...but you have to sacrifice guitar effect blocks to do vocals at the same time.
    So....what does all of this mean? They are fabulous units, as long as you have everything you need to be alone in the game. Clone your own amps (I didn't have one single REAL amplifier when I had the Core) get some nice IRs if you'd like, and learn the ins and outs of creating your own presets, or editing the factory ones or the very few available online.
    The world of modelers is pretty crowded right now, and reviews are abundant for all of the devices out there. Reviewers do a great job of illustrating what the DEVICE can do, but nobody really goes into the extra stuff, or even provide alternative options. I've had a Helix Floor, the HR Core, HX Stomp with a Hotone Ampero Stomp, and am now using a Quad Cortex. Again, I do guitar in stereo, vocals, and backing tracks.
    The Helix Floor - VERY limited, you could call it bare bones, no vocal pitch correction, no backing tracks, no "clones, captures, what have you," and the looper is a complete joke...it's LARGE, VERY LARGE....BUT, the community is unmatched. If you can't find a preset online that you like, you didn't look hard enough...and the updates, my goodness, sometimes they would actually surprise us with an update we weren't expecting...need a few more amp models, here you go...want a couple extra delay options, tada...and the effects....wow, this thing is DEEP with options...BUT, it's also nearly 10 years old, and seriously, do I need 50 reverbs on a device when there are only 2 I really use?....and STILL $1500 new...then if you want tracks and vocals, you have to look at TC Helicon, and a PC on stage (other options for tracks available) Then a Midi controller to tie them all together (BUT Midi in the Helix is by far the best of all tthe devices) Total Cost for everything I would need with current needs, Helix $1500, TC Helicon Voicelive play $300, and 1010Music Blackbox $650.....total cost $2450...and it will NOT fit on any pedalboard...and will be HEAVY as hell if you have the Helix, then a small board for the rest.
    Core - like I said, jack of all trades, master of none. Pitch correction that is very touchy, and difficult to really figure out...the manual is a joke. The looper is the best I ever used on a multi effect device...no surprise really, considering, Headrush have the Looperboard as well. The file system is next level, by making it NOT next level....plug the Core in to USB, and it shows up as a drive...move, edit, copy, paste, rename files to your hearts content...don't like the factory presents? Copy them to your PC as a backup, then just delete them all from the device...wiped clean to customize how YOU want...Headrush Core - $800, which is total cost, but like I said, it will DO everything I need it to do, just not very well.
    Quad Cortex - AMAZING piece of gear...captures, the DSP is second to none...you really have to TRY to overload this thing. The community and Cortex Cloud is substantial enough to be able to find whatever it is you need...BUT, it's ALL cloud based...for instance, in order to load an IR, you must upoad it to the cloud, then the QC will download it to the device, you can't just put it on the device. Effects are "meh." The ones they have are good...but there's not many. They don't really add any in updates either, because Neural is trying to catch up with everything they promised as launch nearly 3 years ago. They promised Plugin support (you can use Neural DSP plugins ON the device) at launch. The current firmware update they are working on actually makes it possible...caveats, you must OWN the plugins...so you have to PAY $100 to get the plugin, then the device will recognize your license and allow you to use it on the QC, itself. AND, the update has taken even longer to release than anticipated. They announced it in March, saying they had hoped to release it at the end of June...still waiting. The update was to also include expanded midi control (which is desperately needed) and for my needs, pitch correction, among other features. Oh yeah....the QC still costs $1700...and I got a 1010Music Blackbox for tracks at $650. Total cost, $2350, and it all fits on a Rockboard Tres 3.3. Though, time will tell if the pitch correction for vocals is something I can use the QC for...right now, I have a Flamma Corrector.
    So....that leads me to what I think would be the ideal setup for what I do...though I'm not doing it because well...I have a Quad Cortex. All of the setups mentioned would require a midi controller. There are tons out there, and it would be common in all the setups mentioned, so I won't include it's cost.
    Line 6 HX Stomp ($600), plus 2 Tonex ones (2X $180), plus a TC Helicon Voicelive Play (300), plus a 1010Music Blackbox ($650), and a midi controller. Total Cost $1910, and every component does what it should. The stomp for effects, the dual Tonexes for the amps, blackbox for tracks, and voicelive (I wish they weren't so big) for vocals...and everything would still fit on my Rockboard. And most of this could be found used, as well...
    Just my 2 cents since I actually owned the Core, and can compare it to some of the more popular options. Bottom line, if you like community, and the ability to purchase tons of professionally created presets...and you actually like that the manufacturer updates their firmware....get a Line 6 product..The Helix line (including the Stomp) are the only devices I've used that feel "finished." They do what they do, and they do it well...there's really nothing to "fix." BUT, they are old...
    If you want a true all in one, without all those pesky people supporting it, get the Core
    If you want an absolute monster of a device that may actually reach it's true potential in a few years, get a Quad Cortex (no, I'm not bitter at all, why would you say that?)
    Want to mortgage the house? Look at Fractal, and from what I hear, be prepared to spend at least a month "dialing in" your ideal tone...again, option paralysis isn't a good thing.
    There are many reasons you see gigging UA-camrs always seem to go back to their HX stomp setups...don't ignore that...Chris Buck, Jon Nathan Cordy, Steve Sterlacci...all have attempted to use alternatives, but still use an HX Stomp or HX Stomp XL for gigging.
    Damn, that was wordy, no wasn't it....for my next Thesis................................

    A bit aggravating how good this sounds. But, do I regret my 200+ pedals (many purchases influenced by this show...one that even came directly from Ryan's garage)-? Only when I move-- otherwise, no. Weird as it sounds, I'm inspired by the aesthetics and functional limitations and tactile experience of actual pedals. But this is nice.
    P.S. I want that micro battery amp patch. Brilliant!

    • @Crispy_Music_2024
      @Crispy_Music_2024 18 днів тому

      I agree about sticking with pedals for the total experience. Also, most pedals are just industrial electrical components that can be repaired forever. These computer things will fail and there's no repair if you don't have a backup of the operating system software and all of its updates.

    • @mykhedelic6471
      @mykhedelic6471 18 днів тому

      @@Crispy_Music_2024 I hsd that thought, too. Still, I believe these things allow you to dump to a harddrive. But, pedals keep on keepin on when software goes out of date and drivers deteriorate or aren't available for update. Still a few Maestro Fuzz Tones or Binson Echorecs around....

      @JoeBaermann 18 днів тому

      Feedback when connected to what?
      And you did make sure that output volume was unison?
      Gain always stacks up, so output needs to be adjusted back down to mic level.
      With a PA the speakers/monitors also benefit from going through a ring out adjustment, maybe best with the drive engaged to catch the offending frequencies.

    • @Crispy_Music_2024
      @Crispy_Music_2024 18 днів тому

      The purpose of companies putting out digital gear is because it'll fail, go obsolete, and can't be repaired if you don't have the core software to install on the hard drive, which means future generations have to buy something as opposed to continuing to use old equipment.

    • @JoeBaermann
      @JoeBaermann 18 днів тому +1

      Some of it will last for decades.
      Back in 95 I had a Digitech RP10 which had a hardware error early on, but the slightly older Digitech rack multi fx from back then still works.
      Boss GT6, 8, 100 and Line6 Pod XT Live also still work.
      Using a GT1000 Core as my main fx unit now, only thing it is sensitive to is the placement on top of my poweramp, to much heat building up at certain spots, the 1000C produces quite some heat on it’s own.
      Also using a NUX Amp Academy with it for the JCM sound, which with low bias and gain sounds more like a JTM together with the drives from the GT that I use in front of it.
      The cool thing and reason for me using that Boss unit over others is that the divider blocks can be set to input sensivity, which means that the guitars volume is all that is needed to go fron a rythm sound to a much louder lead sound with auto wah, delay and more output volume, perfect for having more on top at full volume without having a single pedal on the floor.
      I see a lot of talk around updates/patches, which is fine if there are issues, but I never learned to count on them to include new features, probably because it wasn’t a thing back in time, plus that selling a brand new unit with bugs/errors just would have been bad.
      It is always nice to get new features though, but bugs shouldn’t even exist upon release.
