    April 11th, 1954 being named "The Most Boring Day in History" actually makes it less boring

      reminds me of the proof that every number is interesting: If there are uninteresting numbers, take the smallest one. The fact that this number is the smallest uninteresting number makes it interesting, so you have a contradiction and so uninteresting numbers cannot exist.

      The title of being the most boring thing, as it generates some percieved interestingness, creates the paradox that if it exists, than it must not exist, as long as out of all the competing candidates, it is won by a small margin, which is less than the interestingness created with the announcement of that title, and I end my sentence.

    So I saw another person on here say April 18th 1930 had the BBC say “There is no news”. I did a bit of basic research, I couldn’t exactly access some newspapers because it required money, the most important things on that day, as far as I can tell are:
    Births: Jean Guillou, Clive Revill and Angus Lennie, minor musicians and actors.
    Deaths:literally no one significant
    Events: The BBC said there was no news, a hurricane happened in the Phillipines killing over a hundred and a fire in a random Romanian village occurred.
    News: I found a little bit on some murders, some political claims and then I think Sydney and New York might of made a breakthrough with something to do with radios?
    This was really just a ten minute look up that made me curious, this might have been the most boring day, or at least a very boring day.

    • @Sam-vy8ye
      @Sam-vy8ye 2 роки тому +76

      Funny thing is that today the hurricane in the Philippines on an otherwise slow news day would dominate the headlines but because at the time the Philippines was just a far away, insignificant colony not even part of the British Empire to the few Brits who were even aware of its existence it didn’t even make the news when there was virtually no other news. Although maybe the speed of news at the time could’ve also affected it. This was two years before the BBC World Service. Maybe it might have been presented differently when the World Service was broadcasting

Not sure where the stereotype of the 50s here being a mostly stagnant, snooze of a decade came from, but it is DEAD WRONG (started off with the Korean War, then the nuclear buildups, Stalin died, amongst all this the civil rights movement was well underway, then the Space Age took off with Sputnik and Explorer 1, St. Lawrence Seaway was built and opened, then the Interstate System was born). Sometimes I wonder how non-computerized newspapers kept up with all the simultaneous stories.

      Unless there is something else exciting about turning 21 besides being able to drink, I think you're missing something big relative to this topic about 1954... the drinking age was not yet 21. So it was still your mother's birthday, but likely not the most exciting birthday.

    • @egpx

      Well it wasn’t the drinking age I was talking about to be honest. My mum is British and I don’t even know what the legal drinking age was back then. No, your 21st birthday was when you ‘came of age’, in other words became an adult and gained legal independence from your parents. It changed to 18 in 1969 but 21 retains a historic significance even to this day.

People went through their day for the most part - dazed and horrified and distracted, sure, but still living their lives.
