    I remember watching this event on TV early in the morning but I was so afraid when it was MO's turn that I hid myself in the kitchen and prayed for her. I was and am still so happy that she won Gold here.
    She's my all time favorite gymnast !

    If Mo Huilan had put it all together at this competition, she would have blown the field away. She was absolutely amazing on every event. She went what, 9.937 on vault in TF, 9.9 here on beam and over 9.8 on vault and floor on multiple occasions, JUST at these worlds. What was she in the AA, 4th or 5th with a fall? in 1995 that is nothing short of amazing.

    0:32 “ none can touch her, if she hits”
    Yep, pretty much sums up Mo Huilan in 1995 and maybe 1996

    • @JamesFrew1
      @JamesFrew1 6 років тому +3

      Ersatz Productions I think Podkopayeva, Huilan and Dawes would all be pretty on par if they hit in 1996. I would go 1.2.3. in that order in Atlanta had they done so.

    • @lindazunino
      @lindazunino 5 років тому +20

      Mo Huilan was in my opinion the only person capable of beating Podkopayeva in 95 and 96 (and by far the best gymnast China has ever produced). Probably two of the best all arounders ever, with innovative routines and amazing style. Too bad Mo Huilan had inconsistency problems, she could have won double the medals she has

    • @nonshowbizbiker
      @nonshowbizbiker 5 років тому +5

      @@lindazunino Mo Huilan was definitely Top 3. I much prefer her routines on beam and bars.
      But realistically, at least in the Olympics, Amanar actually had the bigger chance of winning gold. She actually outscored Podkopayeva in the team optionals, and could have very well done so in the individual all-around had she not messed up her turn on floor and Podkopayeva was appropriately deducted on bars.

    Comparing Dominique Moceanu with Mo Huilan is like comparing a piece of costume jewellery with a diamond: there is no comparison. This exercise is one of the best demonstrations of beam I have ever seen. I HATE the way Dominique Moceanu never pointed her toes at all, she was really flat footed. This routine is absolutely breathtaking.

    • @grantlevis9287
      @grantlevis9287 6 років тому +4

      Moceanu did not deserve to tie for silver with Podkopayeva at all. And I would have given Miller bronze over her even with her small errors.

    It was so sad Dudnik only lasted one year. She could have been a contender for the AA, vault, beam, and floor golds by Barcelona if she continued and kept developing. I heard some politics also kept her from ever getting out of the Soviet Union again along with injuries. The Soviet depth was insane so you had to keep on top of thigns all the time or you could go from potential great to nothing fast.

    @Swankdor I have to respectfully disagree. Her skills were on par with the difficulty of the era, her artistry, lines, and choreo were great. @grafgirl27 i can't really put my finger on it but i just remember really liking the flow of her routine. it didn't feel like skill in between choreo, everything felt proplerly placed. her 98 routine is better imo. i think marinescu was definitely the most artistic romanian in 96 but i guess i just never really got into her gymnastics as much as others have. a part of maybe because i didn't see the same routine throughout atlanta so i wasn't able to appreciate her gymnastics.

    I agree-and I also don't think Moceanu should have tied for silver with Podkopayeva. I think Lilia showed the better overall qualities like her pointed toes, high up on demi-point, her straddle jump was a dream on beam-and she had a harder dismount than Moceanu as well.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 even Amanar atleast has exciting power on vault and tumbling. Gogean is just consistent and solid. If she were from say Canada she might be Canadas #1 but she would have been a relative nobody at the World level. However being from Romania she somehow becomes a huge name with that kind of gymnastics. I remember in beam finals at the 97 Worlds Connors and Johnson were stunned when Khorkina was placed below Gogean , then flabergasted when Kui next also was.

  • @agators212
    @agators212 14 років тому

    @serenakicksass actually, kui scored the highest beam score during the team finals. she scored a 9.875...had she not made a mistake during the compulsories she would have been the favorite. and again, mo scored a 9.800 during the all around even with a big step/hop on the landing indicating that the judges were very willing to give her a 10.0 for a perfect routine.

  • @ralucagymnast
    @ralucagymnast 15 років тому

    Apparently her problem with the dismount was psychological: the coach said that Mo Huilan was afraid of her dismount, which explains why she frequently messed it up.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому +1

    @agators212 Silivas was capable of a 10 on all but vault, Shushunova on all but beam, and Dobre at her best on all but bars. Silivas was best in compulsories which should have given her an edge but always made silly small errors (or sometimes big ones like falls) that hurt her in the AA. Dobre scored 79.65 at Worlds, Shushunova 76.662 in Seoul, and Silivas 76.637 in Seoul so that gives some perspective how close it would be.

  • @aminah2012

    i think what would set yang apart from dudnik would be having better execution. as much as i also love dudnik, it was truly way way way ahead of its time. but i have always considered yang to have one of me most beautiful and stylish routines along with her impeccable form

  • @dahighbar

    She was one tiny step away from the most greatest balance beam routine of all time..They probly wouldve have given out a 10..she would have really deserved it

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 The judges often dont take proper deductions. At the 94 Worlds Milo scored a 9.837 on beam with a huge wobble on her side sumi and a hop on the landing. What deductions they often choose to take is anyones guess.
    As for Kui event finals would probably be totally different than team. Just look at how Dawes got a 9.850 for a flawed bar routine in team, but only a 9.8 in finals. Remember they werent even willing to put Kui above Gina Boregean in beam finals at the 97 Worlds.

  • @agators212
    @agators212 13 років тому

    @intldawn yeah its sad but true. my favorite beam worker of all time is someone who never won a major world or olympic medal on beam but she is IMO the definition of perfect form, extension, flexibility, originality, height, everything...perfect package except not the metal fortitude. she always perfromed well during the team and AA but never during EF
    watch?v=gpqf6eJ7U-Y
    what i would give to have this dismount replace all her EF dismounts from 89-92

  • @agators212
    @agators212 15 років тому

    @russianskatingfan thats unfortunately true...especially yang bo. my favorite beam worker of all time even with all her mistakes...still makes me cry when yang makes that mistake at the 89 world ef. would have traded her all around performance for the ef or atleast that dismount.
    but again, if those girls didn't choke, miller would not have an individual olympic gold

  • @agators212
    @agators212 11 років тому

    true...dudnik would have been a huge game changer in the rest of that quad.

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 15 років тому

    @agators212 yes I agree. The beam event was kind of a mess all around anyway. None of the wonderful Chinese beam workers (especialy Mo, Xuan, and Kui) made beam finals. Marinescu, Moceanu, and Galieva falling in beam finals. Dina with a very shaky routine and Lilia not her best either. Dawes and Khorkina out of beam finals due to the 2 country rule then watching their teammates fall. Gina Gogean as the bronze medalist says it all. Miller won almost by default.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 Kui I doubt. The judges werent even willing to put Kui over Gogean and Khorkina on beam at the 97 Worlds (a joke I know) so I doubt they would have placed her above a perfect Miller in the 96 event finals. Mo maybe, hard to say how her beam would have scored at the 96 Games though where none of the Chinese were scoring as high as the 95 Worlds held in Asia.

  • @russianskatingfan

  • @agators212

    @serenakicksass yeah, i think she definitely would have given silivas and shushunova a run for their money. imagine how much more spectacular if all three of them hit and placed 1, 2, 3? if dobre had performed at 87 worlds i think she might have edge the other two...but who knows

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 I am surprised Gogean even managed to get a 10 start value under the new 97-2000 code as well. She BARELY did enough for a 10 start value in 96. I think it is because they added silly bonuses in 97 for things like a combination of a salto into a beep jump or other little insignificant like jumps tacked onto the end of tricks. She had a couple places in the routine she gained extra bonus that way. Being Gina you know she looked for the easiest loopholes humanly possible.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 I am not talking though about what Lilia "should" have scored on bars (she was always overscored on bars) or if Mo had her 95 floor routine . As it was they had about the same amount of small errors on the first 3 events and Mo only led Lilia by 0.031, and with Mo's 96 floor routine which was much worse than her 95 one she was far worse than Lilia on floor with both hitting by over a tenth probably (would be less with her 95 routine). So I cant see Mo winning overall.

  • @agators212
    @agators212 14 років тому +1

    @grafgirl27 i just loved the composition of moceanu's routine. galieva, i hated the flow of her routine, podkopayeva was overpraised on that event especially with having the weakest tumbling sequence out of all the finalist with the exception of gogean. marinescu, i like her a lot but her routine that she did in the 97 american cup was better, even though for the 97 code it wasn't difficult enough. but that's just me

    Dudnik was exceptional on BB except her leaps were much too low, especially relative to Yang Bo. Otherwise, she was outstanding. It's too bad Dudnik became injured because in 1990, her leaps were slightly improved and her full twisting layout was more laid out (it was a little piked in 1989).

    • @grantlevis9287
      @grantlevis9287 6 років тому

      Dudnik was a wonderful gymnast. Her only slightly weak event was bars but even her bars was very good, certainly atleast comparable to Boginskaya. She could have won the AA in both 91 and 92 I think. Heck she could have won in 89 if she didnt have a fluke fall on compulsory bars and could have won vault, beam (would have won without botched dismount), and floor (was robbed).

    • @timduggal8595

      I wish Dudnik had not fallen on compulsory bars in 1989. I think she would have won the 89 world AA title otherwise. And if she had been healthy and continued she could have won the 92 Olympic AA and the titles on both vault and beam too.

  • @agators212

    @serenakicksass they did not have same small error on the first 3 events. mo had a huge step on her beam dismount but still having scored a 9.800. the only score that i agreed with during lilia's aa was her floor. it was the far superior floor compared to everyone else at 96. but i can't change time...i like lilia and she deserved that aa especially with her consistancy. i definitely didn't want any of the romanians to win with their boring routines. i just believe that mo could've won

    @russianskatingfan yeah totally agree. i forgot gogean won the bronze for that undeserving routine. it shouldn't have even made finals even without the chinese. what makes it worse is that gina wins the world title for the very same routine in 97. i also thought lilia is highly overrated on beam. i hate the composition of her beam, especially that tumbling pass.

  • @JacobSmithVespa
    @JacobSmithVespa 16 років тому

    Trust me on that.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @agators212 yeah Raducan's bars sucked but she atleast showed artistry, difficulty, and originality on beam and floor (and even originality on vault to a degree) unlike her teammates. I agree it was tragic what happened with Dobre. I think she would have been right in the fight for the AA gold with Silivas and Shushunova in Seoul had she not gotten injured, and would have continued gymnastics a couple more years. I like Progras but she needs to upgrade vault big time for the AA.

  • @serenakicksass
    @serenakicksass 14 років тому

    @dahighbar Mo's floor score probably would have kept her from winning the AA even if she hit. Her floor was so much weaker than Lilia even if she was equal or better on all 3 other events.

  • @agators212
    @agators212 14 років тому

    @serenakicksass yeah atleast amanar had the vault and high tumbling on floor. but she is far from artistic as well. i too remember connor's and johnson's reaction to the score at 97. i still havent gottan anyone to explain to me how gogeon's routine amounted to a 10sv for having the same exact routine she did in 96 when everyone else had to add more difficulty. the only ones that had plenty of difficulty were kui and khorkina because of the tumbling passes

  • @agators212
    @agators212 15 років тому

    @russianskatingfan if everyone had hit, who was in the 96 beam finals i would have had moceanu, miller, and dina. in no particular order either cuz i loved all three of their routines. if the chinese had been there i would have put mo, kui, and third could be anyone else cuz liu wouldn't have been able to compete cuz 2 other chinese women were there. but i would have put dina on the podium for floor. loved that routine she did, more elegant than lilia's IMO and amanar wasn't at all artistic.

  • @agators212
    @agators212 14 років тому

    @serenakicksass actually had mo kept her 95 worlds routine and if lillia and mo hit all 4 routines and scored properly mo would have won easily. her vault and beam were far superior. and bars, lilia should never had scored no where near what mo scored. mo scoring only a 9.80 on bars is ridiculous. the only even that lilia should have outscored mo was on floor because she had the best floor routine and deservedly won gold in atlanta

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 15 років тому

    @agators212 Kochetkova even with her mistake should have been on the podium over Gina, and Teslenko also was more deserving. Even amongst the Romanians I would have had Milosovici in the beam finals over Gogean, I dont even like her beam but atleast she does a difficult layout series. Gogean has her name going for her. The 97 World beam final was a scandal though. Kui had one of the most amazing routines ever, Khorkina was also much better, even Teza probably.

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 15 років тому

    @agators212 yeah Gogean should have never won floor at those Worlds either. Produnova was way better, and even Khorkina who I usually find overscored on floor deserved to be higher too. I agree with your podium at the 96 Games- Miller, Dina, Lilia in that order. If Dina hadnt had that big wobble I would have put her over Miller though. 2000 was the worst for sure though, so many mistakes and big falls especialy the AA, Raducan's DQ, the vault controversy, Russians poor sportmanship after team.

    @russianskatingfan yeah, i would have put dina behind miller. 97 worlds and 2000 olympics are my 2 most disappointing gymnastics events. 97 because of all the goodbye gold medals awards gogean. 2000 because it was just a big ol mess, first the vault, then raducan's gold taken away, now the chinese underage scandal. it just wont stop

    @serenakicksass its quite unfortunate though that the judges could have time again given the medals to worthy gymnasts but instead gave it to someone really boring, although consistant, but not exciting whats so ever or even has great form. its just a shame

    @serenakicksass well again, the judges were on crack at 97 worlds giving gina going away gold presents because of her retirement from the sport. deplorable....and dawes got a 9.725 during team competition with a dismount on beam at 96 and a 9.825 in aa without the step. so if miller got 9.862 in team, aa, and ef kinda presumes kui had a good chance of scoring a 9.875 again in ef like she did during the team had she gone perfect.

    @agators212 yes Gogean's golds at the 97 Worlds were a farce. On beam I had her probably 4th behind Kui, Khorkina, Teza, and maybe even 5th behind Maloney who had wretched form but tons more difficulty and was just as solid. On floor I had her 3rd behind Produnova and Khorkina, possibly even 4th behind Meng Fei. Gina Gogean is one of the most overrated gymnasts ever. Ironically I thought she was robbed of the 93 World AA Miller won but in 96 and 97 especialy she had alot of gifts.

    It is also sad to see artistic and original Romanian gymnasts with flawless form and technique like Silivas, Commaneci, and even Szabo from the previous generations and then see the likes of Milo, Amanar, Bontas, Gogean, Olaru as the 90s greats of Romanian gymnastics with no artistry, mostly cookie cutter safe routines, no personality at all. Raducan for me is the only great Romanian gymnast of the last 2 decades.

    hhhmmm.. this routine seems a little simple..? only the RO LO is difficult and maybe the dismount.. a little overated perhaps..?

    She should not have won. She was very artistic and had very good form but Lilia also had great form in her routine, was just as artistic with better toe point, and Lilia had way more difficulty. There are no big moves in this routine at all, except the round off-layout which about 20 girls were doing anyway. I am surprised she even had a 10 start value.

      Lilia didn't have great difficulty in her routine. Two backhandsprings into a Ruedo is actually a fairly lame flight series. Lilia also had some fairly lame dance moves in her beam routine here. I also found LIlia's leg form to be way too rigid and locked in. She lacked the ease that Mo did. Mo also had much better jumps and leaps.
