Single Mom raising three boys drove a 68 beetle. It swollow the number three cylinder valve in 1976 . I was 12 . She was working three jobs to feed us . I quickly realized without a car we wouldn't eat . That week i became a mechanic. She's eighty two now . I'm still working as a mechanic. 1966 travelall forestry truck is my daily driver.
That’s awesome! ❤❤❤
Political, or patriotic... Talk about it, be about it. Facts don't care about feelings. If you don't support this country, you support some other country. Come through the front door, don't try and sneak in through the window! Even Mexico has immigration laws..if you are in their country for more than three days, you must apply for a Mexican visa. If you travel into Baja past Guerrero Negro, you must have a travel visa. You may not legally work in Mexico without permission. Same with Canada. Don't start calling a country racist because they have rules.
100%
We have the same concerns here in the uk and Ireland and if we say anything about our concerns our new PM deems to call you racist and a far right thug he even calls pensioners in their 70’s and WW2 veterans in their 80’s and 90’s far right thugs ..Now we have folk getting sent to gaol (British) or Jail for you Americans .for having an opinion or voicing concerns about mass illegal immigration ..❤🇬🇧🇺🇸❤🤝
So true!
Thank you, Merlin! I don't see it as political, at all! There is a literal ongoing invasion.
ABSOFUKKINLUTELY
Thanks for standing up for AMERICA 🇺🇸. Much respect for a UA-camr that builds a car in one episode while others struggle for content and take months to get anything done.
Amen brother on both subjects.
only one way to keep that boarder under control.....TRUMP 2024
stand with you Merlin fellow Patriot ❤️🇺🇸❤️
Yes🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
In 1976 i got stranded in a snow storm in my 64 Bug. Slid of a road into a snowbank traped inside for 63 hrs still ran but trees blocked it in. A guy with a tractor just happened to see the corner of 5he bumper and got me out . I still have that car but don't drive it much anymore . Great channel.
Want to sell it?
@@christophersells9146 nope . It's going to my granddaughter ,in 2 more yrs she will be driving so getting it out next spring to rehab it so she has a.car
I dare anyone to put out this quality of video weekly,
Its just impossible.
New or old School...
You never be as Cool school as Merlin.
Thanks Dude. 😎🗽🇺🇸
My Uncle Wolfgang and I built my first car when I was 15 (in 1979). He was a trained Volkwagen mechanic. The car was a 1962 VW bug that we converted into a Baja Bug, complete with a stinger exhaust and off-road tires. Sure wish I still had that car!
Greetings from Germany... Merlin Thank You so much for standing up and speaking out. As long as I have been watching your channel I had always wondered your stance. Now I know and your viewers know, you stand for America. A gain thank you for speaking out. USA
Merlin, you're putting everyone's childhood back together, one hoopty at a time, keep up the amazing work!
In 1975, 76,77 I was a
volunteer fire fighter, Columbus, New Mexico, and our assistant chief Lexi sprigs may she rest in peace. She had a baby blue Volkswagen we used to go everywhere with her we had so much fun so many memories.
Thanks for the border update, keep it real and not what the news tells us. Also liked your comment a while back, can't remember the video, about all of the coal in the rail cars headed to the power plant to make power to charge the Tesla's.
Don't forget all the chargers using natural gas!!
Truth isn't political, thank you for the real information.
Thanks for not getting political- but making the point- The same point that most Americans feel right now :-) Great show!
Hard not to be political when ONLY one party wants an open border, also why do you care if he "got political"? This country is in the decline we are in right now because good men have stayed quiet for far too long, we can no longer afford to idly stand by and hope that problems fix themselves!
It might be for the wrong reason but I am glad to see the border patrol working anyway.
When I was a kid I had a 53 VW.
I painted on the right side of the engine cover “ you have just been passed by 36hp” but in the hills of Western Pennsylvania, not many people got to drive it.
It became a victim of the rust belt. I probably miss that car more than any other I ever owned. Back in the seventies I could cruise all day on $2.00 worth of gas!
Last year we took all country roads in our rv along the border from Brownsville, Texas to San Diego, California. We spent 3 months making the trip seeing everything along the way. What an amazing trip. There were so many border patrol officers along the way. We did not see any immigrant situation along the way either. There were a couple of inspection stations closed but there was a radar surveillance vehicle about every 15 miles along the way. We felt very safe the entire trip.
Go to Aurora Colorado or Denver and tell us how safe you feel
In your request for VW stories, I had two beetles, a 61 and a 67. The worst story was when I drove the 61 from Bangor Maine to Calais Maine (about 95 miles) in Maines winter weather driving with one hand on the wheel and the other hand scraping the inside of the windshield to keep the frost away so I could see to drive.
I was a wee lad in the 60s, I was inside of a Volkswagen body with the Dentice Brothers, smoking cigarettes.
All I remember is Donnie had three lit cigarettes between his fingers and was puffing on them, then Mr Dentice opened the door, and proceeded to drop kick all three of them towards the house. He looked at me and told me to go home....
I am glad you have the freedom to speek your mind , thank you !!!!!
I’m 65 year old. When I was 10 (1969) my parents took my two siblings and I on vacation from Los Angeles to Yellowstone in their 1965 VW Bug. Roof rack for luggage. We fought over who gets to ride in the space behind the rear seat. Summertime, no AC. Great memories!
I'm born '59! A/C in a car!! YOU GOTTA BE RICH 😢😂😂😂 THE DAYS HUH!!?? I wouldn't trade it for Nothin'!!
It doesn't bother me one bit if you get political. Appreciate the update on the border patrol! I had a beetle for about 8 hours back in 93, 94 I think. Had it long enough to harvest the front beam, the motor and trans axle. Then I took the rest of the car back to the junkyard and scrapped it. Was going build myself a dune buggy. To this day that project sits in the weeds haven't finished it yet. 💯👍
Always love watching and listening to you Merlin! Love the bug!
Hello Merlin, My VW story is from my childhood. My first experience with a VW was my friend's dad's 1965 Manx Dune Buggy. His dad had your talent for building things, and he over the years built many Manx buggys that they would take and entred in to the Oakland Roster Shows and won many awards over the years, and it has always been my dream to try and build one for me. Recently I was given a 1972 VW Bug complete, so the dream starts to become reality. Your show provides so much inspiration for such a project, and I only hope my build would make you proud, as I hope it would make my friend's dad proud. Thank you for the content. I get much joy and entertainment from your channel. Thanks again.
Thank you, Merlin! Thank YOU!!
Thank you for speaking up about our border situation! Elections has consequences! Think about America when voting and i mean what will make America Great Again !!!!🇺🇸 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

I too have a 56 bug without the sunroof. I disassembled it 100% and sent the body off to a professional for body repair/paint. The ground up assembly was a labor of love.
Our V.W. experience. We has a 1971 V.W. Type 2 Westy and the engine let go and sent #2 rod thru the case. Meanwhile a friend rolled his 911 and he gave me the engine and transmission. It was a real hoot to have cars come along side on the interstate and we could just blow most away in our sleeper Westy. It would even pop lil baby wheelies! 🙏❤️😎🤙 🚌💨
Merlin's neighbor has a different color flake on his truck every week This week it's black and green. Gust playing 👍Love the Channel.
My grandpa bought me a $500 1970 Squareback with the roof chopped off when I was 9 years old. My dad and I got it back to running proper, and I ripped it around for years until we moved and I had to sell it. 15 years later and I’m still hooked.
I rolled my uncle's VW at age 16 (63 now). We tipped it back up and carried on to the shop with him driving after he pushed out a dent where the roof rack pushed a nasty bump into the car. No windows broken. after shopping he gave me the keys again and I said nope there is a cop across the street. He said, "If you do not drive now you will have a fear of driving for the rest of your life". Well, I did just that and have owned probably 20 cars since then, and 1 tractor (IH BT275)!
My oldest son got into a ditch when a car in the opposite lane crossed the center line. He drove it through a barb-wire fence and back up to the road. Of course the other car didn't stop. When I picked him up I told him drive. He didn't want to but I said the same thing. He has since driven cross-country several times. Get back up on the horse what threw ya!
THANK YOU FOR SAYING WHAT WE ARE ALL THINKING
You are not being political. Just the facts of what you see! Keep posting interesting videos!
I as many, feel your frustration with border control. It's time for a change in administration to get this situation under control.
1970 VW Bug, wifes car, rusted out body, converted to a rail buggy. Chenoweth frame, ran it in southern Missouri black river every Holiday weekend. Riversedge Campground on the Black River
SEMO... black river electric.. sayin hey!
I loaned my old VDUB to a friend for his date night once. When he brought it back he told me that if the backseat was two inches shallower the car would be classified as a birth control method. TMI, I never loaned it out again!
1974 mom, dad and 5 boys took a trip to the Smokey Mountains in a Beetle !!! We had a blast.
Boys were 14, 12, 10, 9, and 8!!!!

Good morning Merlin and family!! Thank you for the video!!
Awesome and outstanding as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
I live in the rust belt of Ontario Canada, my dad used an axe back in the early '70s to cut the body off a '57 bug, the pan was rotten. Used the chassis to build a dune buggy with.
In 1975 I hired on to a 36,000 mtn ranch in Colorado. There was about a 63 VW, and the guys we're using it to catch calves, one would drive and the other rifr on the front and bail off on a calf. They weren't much for cowboys, after that I roped them all, 440 head.
The old owner of the ranch had multiple 411 square backs that he went everywhere in.
Way to speak up Merlin!! We all need to do this 🇺🇸💪🏼👊I live on the border in San Diego
Stay safe
@@KrisD007 alway's, thank you 😊
VW experience! Mid 70's i bought a VW project. The motor was in a box and i dragged it home, carried the motor into my basement and rebuilt it by ordering parts from a JC Whitney part's catalog and it ran and used it in Wisconsin as by going to work car ,all year with no heater. Great video MOSG!
My first VW memory is my recovering alcoholic neighbor (retired mechanic) Tom who bought a sparkling red VW beach buggy that would pop wheelies in low gear. Learned so much from that beautiful old man!
My Dad had a ‘61 bug. I loved play driving that car till the day he forgot to set the parking brake! I ran in the house screaming “I drived the car” I was 4 yr old.
My father bought a 1958 VW it was awgava green . It had 36 hp motor, rag top sunroof, no gas gage, when you ran out of gas their was a lever on the floor to flip for an extra gallon of gas. He gave it to me in 1972 and I drove it for about five years. I loved that car.
Another Great Day with Merlin What a great experience for the next chapter
Have a Great Day 👍
Holy crap, that Beetle shell was hanging on for dear life! 😁😁😁
I like how you do the gas welling instead of miguelding. That shows true craftsmanship
I taught myself to gas weld in my late teens and spent 20 years putting it to good use.
71 now and thought a leccy stick welder would be handy for odd jobs, new hinges on my gates and the like.
What a nightmare. Can’t to anything “nice” with it, yes I can weld stuff, but it’s all gobby, not nice at all.
Thankfully, I’ve got a grinder.
What I’d give for a pair of bottles and a new Saphire torch…. Hey ho…
Great work Merlin 👍❤️🇷🇴
My Volkswagen story is that I've never owned a Volkswagen , and to the best of my knowledge I've never even ridden in one. I've got nothing against them, that's just my life at 74 years old. Great job rebuilding that one.
Everyone talking about affordable housing needs to realize who they are competing with for a place to live and work.
Thanks Merlin. Some of us live on the border and see it everyday. Others don't live here and don't want us to talk about it?
Seems some people forgets who is building those houses.
@@johnt.848 lol,
me. I am.
I build new houses. Older, established Americans buy them and sell their old house to the new guy without citizenship that I'm now competing with for a job and a house. So what's your point again? I'm wondering why I have to compete with non citizens in my own backyard to live? Is the answer because one party wanted more votes?? Young people today can't afford a house after going to college and blame it on the older generations for being greedy. Who is buying and living in the older affordable homes?
Good job John👍

Who are young U.S. citizens competing with for jobs and housing? Who are living in the affordable homes that younger Americans used to be able to buy?
ua-cam.com/video/4Lx6S89MYNA/v-deo.htmlm15s
And why are some U.S. citizens voting to cut short the American Dream for other U.S. citizens in favor of those coming across our border illegally? 🤔
If they're not your kids getting passed by economically, John, they are most certainly the families of your neighbors and friends.

My first VW was a 1963 Karmann Ghia, black with white top. I enjoyed that car and drove it everywhere. The floor pans were rusted through on the passenger side and the seat was welded to an angle iron to keep it in place. And there was an angel to rest the passenger's feet on. The transaxle was rebuilt wrongly and reverse was anywhere you put the shifter. You had to push the shifter down to shift all forward gears after that. IF you forgot to hold the shifter down when shifting the trans would go back into reverse. Fun car!!!!
Bought a ‘68 in the early 90’s for my commuter. One of the best cars I ever owned bought it for $300. Put the header exhaust on it drove it for about 4-5 years the only thing I had to fix a side routine maintenance was the coil burned out. I ended up selling it for $600 when I didn’t need it anymore.
I was born in Bonn, Germany in 1967 and started driving my grandfather's VW from the 60ties at the age of 7. As we owned a company, it was no big deal to drive the VW or a forklift, with which I was already unloading trucks at the age of 5 or 6. At the age of 8, I was also driving the Mercedes Kurzhauber truck. That's why I'm still very attached to these vehicles today and enjoy the details of the vehicles, which I remember very well.
I like your videos and send best wishes from Berlin!
I've never had a vw beetle but I did own an old VW rabbit diesel . I could fill that thing up with fuel and drive for 3 weeks.
My 1980 VW Rabbit got 40 mpg at 80mph, max speed.
Great video. I think it's so great that you are so committed to preserving this historic and unique car and that you put so much effort into it. The best-selling car in the world at the time.
Best wishes from Frankfurt, stay healthy and take good care of yourselves. Gerold
Thank you for asking the question that all us Americans want to know!
My first experience in a VW bug was.. my buddy wanted to show me the 18" subwwofer he had just put in it. He drove out of the mechanics class parking lot in high school, and the passenger front wheel fell off going around like the fourth corner.. he didn't put the lugs back on both front wheels... Easy fix, no damage. The 18" sub was ridiculous!
I’ll just say one thing about your encounter with BP…it’s a perfect example of “ wagging the dog” …love the 56 … wasn’t a fan of the rag top but that’s just me. Looking forward to seeing it all come together.
What a gift! Great color . I can’t wait to hear it run.
In grad school, microbiology, in the 70's I bought an old VW for $400 it ran but not well. We rebuilt the carb and took it for a test ride. Within 4 blocks there was a boom and a flash. The backseat rider asked if we were on fire and I looked in the mirror and said yes. By the time I stopped, he was out of the car. We had a passenger in the front seat. I think he holds the world's record for getting out of the backseat of a bug. The top of the engine was gone, and the fire was caused by cracked bakelite housing, the case was unharmed. Insurance paid $1000 for the car and gave me the wreckage. Cut the body off, and had a friend rebuild the engine with a big bore kit and Webr two barrel. Made it into a rail. Blew it up, and put on larger jugs. The clutch kept burning out and put in a Porsche racing clutch. Had a towbar on the front and hauled it all over.
It was so fast the local police, a friend, put it on Highway 31 late one night and measured its speed by radar, it was very impressive. I think it was 1800cc by then. Sold it to one of them and bought a 360cc Yamaha Enduro.
Thoroughly enjoy your views about the Border. Say it has it is.
Early 70's, I owned a VW dune buggy. In 1978, I married my wife. She had a 1973 VW Beetle as her only means of transportation. We loved them both.
Law and order. That's the funniest thing I heard today
My VW Story: It was about 1966/67 one of my buddies had an old Rag Top VW Bug that he manage to get road worthy.
Out on the highway outside of town we had a really steep and long hill that we were playing around on one night. My buddy was known to be a little on the wild and crazy side he sat up on the edge of the top and was steering the Bug with his feet as we rolled down the hill. Crazy young teens without a thought of danger, but we survived to talk about it years later.
Great build! Oval ragtop is sweet. Reminds me of another long seen oddity, Dodge Dakota Convertible, a Softtop Pickup.
I had a 70s super beetle.
My first car, bought when I was in high school by my parents.
A friend of a friend had it and it broke down downtown Jacksonville.
We got it for 200 bucks plus we had to go get it.
It was a broken accelerator cable my dad helped me fix it and I was driving within a few days.
Good times great memories.
Yes the floor pan was rotted out and there were rust holes under the back window on both sides. LOL
I had a guy give me a 70 Super Beatle for money he owed me I ordered part for the generator. Pulley. Belt. Fixed the speedo. Cleaned it up. Then a couple days latter the bank called and asked if I had it. Told him I did have it. He said he needed to Repo it. Said come get it. And gave him my address. That’s my only experience with a VW
When I first met my wife, she was about to start classes in Saskatoon and so I drove with her in her VW Beetle - a semi-automatic. The transmission was a little worn and would pop out of gear if you hit a bump going 60 mph. Took a while to get used to that, take your foot off the gas and pop it back into gear then put the gas pedal down again before you lost too much speed. She lived in Dawson Creek, so that was 680 miles in two days. Then I took a plane home to Vancouver.
My first car was a 56 vw my pops said a vw would be a great car to fix up and learn how to work on and learn
My story is that I bought one of those back in the day to do the very same thing you are doing…..I sold my project on after a year as I just didn’t have the space to complete it. Boy was that a LONG time ago…..can’t wait to see how it turns out👍🏼👍🏼😃
I started driving in my parents 1978 VW golf( rabbit). Never owned a VW myself until 2016, now onto my third one. The old bugs are great, looking forward to see how yours turns out

Thanks for taking us subscribers along for the ride. What a hoot,a cool VW .✌️👍🤙🤙🍀🍀🍀🍀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸.
1987 my brother bought a 69 bug with auto stick. Donuts for days in the backyard. Then tearing down a 74 super beetle for the bones of a sand rail I helped my dad build. Finally a 72 VW bus with a blown motor, a few dozen trips to the junkyard and the subsequent trips to the machine shop and I was sporting a 2 liter. Sold it in 94 for 2200 bucks.
Hey 👋 Merlin I just love all your projects so cool 😎 Thank You 👍❤️✌️💪🏻☮️
I'm from Montana, My friend s dad worked on and restored VW s . I have never seen a RWD car go so good in the snow! ALMOST as good as a 4X4. The only bad thing the heater didn't work so well. HAHA. We painted his Brandy Apple Wine Red. Lot's of hours in that paint job!
Back in the day I rebuilt the transducers (electromagnets) in a set of side arm signals for a buddies '54 Bug.
I had a '62 VW beater that I trashed to death .. memories 👍😎✊
Another awesome project Merlin. Like the color. We were a VW family my Dad like the VW Bugs I think we had a 61 and a 63 they’d seemed to run forever and we also had a VW bus. What memories. Thank you guys for great videos God Bless
Way to go Merlin keep smiling !!!
Had a 70 bug that was the daily driver for years before a tree fell on it , used to keep a 12 volt blow dryer I got at a truck stop to defrost the windshield in the winter
Dad bought an old Beatle when I was a kid. It was not running and ended up being a dog house for years until he finally put a engine in it and sold the dog house for $400 😊

Just my opinion.
I have the opportunity to work with a lot of different folks.
I can always tell who the FOX News viewers are.
They're angry and outraged.
The country is in imminent danger!
Aren't you paying attention?
Uh, FOX News is 99% opinion. Very little actual news.
The rest of us just aren't interested in getting that fired up about the stuff FOX is going on about.
If I want to hear FOX News talking points, I will turn that on.
I don't.
Just my opinion, and we are all entitled to an opinion. That's what freedom gives all of us.
My vw experience story is; I loved my uncles car and when I was 16 he let my drive it for a week. When I took it back he drove it to town and back. He stopped at end of his drive to check the mail and it burned to the ground. I really like the older ones like this with the oval glass and rag top. This is perfect....I'd daily this one.

My VW story:
In 1974, Junior year of HS, had a 66 bug. It was clean for a W. Va. car, ran great. It had a 2bbl carb and a transporter transaxle, adapters and 14” Ford rims with Firestone Wide O Oval tires, beauty rings and chrome lug nuts. It would tear up the curves in Southern W Va. and was a fun High School car.
All pictures lost in a house fire, but great memories.
I enjoy your work and your channel.
Thanks!
