Kristine Sutherland plays 16 SO well in this episode. Her gum chewing and eye rolls are perfect. It's great to see her get to play around and have fun as teenage Joyce!
And yes, EVERYONE hates the cheating storyline.
Eliza Dushku was under 18 during the first half (roughly) of the season, so there were rules regarding how many hours she could work and thus how much Faith could be onscreen.
I heard she got emancipated at 17 and got a judge to sign off on her emancipation who was already a fan of the show and her character at the time
@@erickwebster1973 yep! "When she began her work on the series, Dushku was still a minor, and had to receive emancipation to work the production's long hours. She later recalled with amusement that the judge who handled her emancipation case, who was an avid fan of the show, jokingly said that she would sign the emancipation order if she could get a signed photo from Dushku."
She was born December 30th, 1980, so at the very end of 1998 she turned 18.
@@ernesthakey3396 nailed it
@@erickwebster1973 Eliza actually got emancipated years earlier, from when she was in True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Band Candy spawned a lot of Giles crushes among fans and later reactors.
Snyder is such a riot in band candy.
There are some foxy ladies here tonight!
Right? Armin Shimmerman is such a great actor.
Whoa, Summers! You drive like a spazz!
I took taekwondo at the Y!
"You're MY Slayer! Knock his teeth out!!"
Hands down the BEST line in TV history.
That's ASH's real accent; James Marsters got his accent for Spike from practicing with him, kerk
Angel is practicing Tai Chi, It is a real martial art. It does have a bit of a reputation as something old people do in parks, because of it's slow movement. But it is a legit form that focuses on defensive rather than offensive movements. The movement is slow for practice, but if you actually needed to use it in a fight you would of course speed it up. There's a lot more to it, but it actually makes a lot of sense for it to be what Angel is practicing as he's getting healthy and back to himself, since it's gentle, focusing on strength and flexibility, as well as meditative/ mental health.
😂😂😂😂😂 Took it when I was 22. No one in the class was over 30. There are a huge number of variations; some use weapons.
If you train _extensively_ in a martial style meaning most of all - and I can't stress this enough - you actually _practice fighting_ (albeit sparring) using Tai Chi then it can definitely work. But a couple of times a week down your local park or gym in the slow, meditative style will be _great_ for your general well-being and mostly useless for self-defence (partly because "...you would of course speed it up." is doing a _lot_ of heavy lifting here :).
(basically, if your self-defence training doesn't involve a bit of actually hitting and getting hit, as unpleasant as that is, then if/when it happens for real you won't be remotely prepared - "everyone has a plan until they're punched in the face" is an old adage for a reason)
Joyce and Giles sitting around listening to Deep Purple is one of my favorite little scenes of the series!
I believe the song playing was by Cream (Tales of Brave Ulysses),but I’m sure Deep Purple is in Ripper’s album collection as well!
They're listening to Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses not Deep Purple.
This song comes back in season 5, and it is so sad.
That callback is subtle and crushing.
The writers of this show are known for only giving you what you want in the worst possible way and the Willow and Xander romance might be a perfect example of that.
Either Xander was maybe affected by the candy or he's already at peak immaturity which might explain his behavior while clearly Willow's long-standing crush still has its hooks in her.
On the other hand, Giles and Joyce were hilarious together. They need more scenes with each other.
By this point... The writers were mostly Joss, Greenwalt and Noxon. And being a romance thing, mostly Joss and Noxon... Season 4 onwards Joss had, finally, his team (on set too).
When they introduced the mayor, I focus on Alan. That guy is absolutely terrified that says more than anything else I think terrifying, Mr. Rogers.
Yeah.... Welcome to Joss Whedon's weird habit of giving you things you wanted, in a way you don't want, as a bizarre form of punishment for wanting it...or something? I dunno. Its not the last time. 😂 Band Candy though
Regarding Giles's accent, this is fairly typical of men of his age (and older). When students from across in England would go to posh Universities, they would tend to adopt (often permanently) the accents of those schools. This is why Stephen Fry and Patrick Stewart speak so properly, despite being from parts of England with very distinctive accents (East Anglia and Yorkshire, respectively).
What we see here is evidence that Giles is from East London, and thus spoke with a Cockney accent, which he later abandoned (likely in pursuit of academic respectability).
The "children are important" line at the end of Homecoming actually foreshadows Mr. Trick's job in Band Candy...
Love LOVE the fact that you mentioned that the word Chaos is associated with Ethan Rayne because there’s a Buffy game titled Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds where Ethan is the big bad 😆
Faith was only supposed to originally get a handful of episodes, but due to Eliza's popularity she was kept on longer, plus she was in back to back movie and tv projects in the early 2000's, so her schedule was crazy
this is not the early oughts. this is the late nineties. eliza was underage and thus had limited working hours.
willow is the definition of ‘its the quiet ones you have to look out for’, the whole cheating thing seems random and annoying but as you go through season to season it kinda makes sense. she’s definitely one of the best, fleshed out characters of the show imo
I would add that Xander has a tendency to self-sabotage. So, from that perspective his part in the cheating makes sense too.
Yes Angelus and Drusilla ran away slow motion from an explosion as Buffy rocket launched at the judge blue Smurf
When Giles puts that coat on Joyce, the hanger is still in.
You know, in Buffy even "monster of the week" episodes do something. They might advance the overarching plot, or explore regular characters, or introduce some new characters who return later... So, in a way, there are no true "monster of the week"s. Even that stupid "Teacher's Pet" at the very least gets referenced now and then.
I love this reaction! Everyone always roots for Xander/Willow at the start, then when it actually happens everyone is like, “Ew! No! Why?!” 😂 That’s the power of the Buffy writing!
Buffy got the blood from a butcher.
This show excels at giving its viewers exactly what they want in a way that they wish it did not. I'm talking about Xander/Willow, of course.
I have to say, I love it when somebody totally inadequate physically stops the threat basically by sheer force of will. Xander excels at that, he did it with Angelus in the episode "Killed by Death", when Buffy was in a hospital and Angelus just walked in and tried to go into her room. There is more of that to come, but here Cordelia shows she can do it just as well.
Angel/Buffy finally getting it on last season, too. And so much more to come. Whedon LOVES to go "Oh, you want this? _evil grin._ Ok."
You did not remember when The Mayor told Trick that "the children are our future"?
I HATED the cheating storyline, but Band Candy is one of my faves.
Everyone hated it, that’s why they put that sickly sweet romantic music over it - just to piss you off even more!
Joss Whedon’s mantra: always give people what they want, in exactly the way or time that they don’t want it.
A lot of British accents are class signifiers as much as region, and Teen Giles doing a working-class city boy voice instead of his likely upper-middle-class Oxbridge one is on brand.
8:16 I was a teen in 1998 (in fact I'd have been in the year below Buffy and her friends in high school had they, you know, not been fictional) and Willow's outfit is... fine I guess. Honestly Buffy's everyday fashions would have been considered much more cute.
The Mayor wasn’t “appeasing” the demon… he made it pretty clear he was giving it the children to fulfill a promise he made in exchange for something else (apparently something that helped him get elected or remain in office). I think he referred to it as fulfilling a “campaign promise” (to the demon).
Pretty much everyone hates seeing Willow and Xander together at this point… super cringy. 😜
Great reaction as always. 🎉
I don't _like_ it,but I can't _hate_ it because Willow is just too cute!!❤💙
Eliza was under 18 during this season so they use her sparingly due to child labor laws.
Plus guest characters usually won't be in all episodes for budget reasons.
Eliza got emancipated at 14 so she could work longer hours on the set of True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. She mentioned that in an interview. So that's really not it.
I loved that you picked up a picture of Oz and said "cheating on THIS man?!?" 😂 I love Oz too, not a fan of this storyline at all!
"They're both cheaters, now? Well, Xander I'm not surprised."
Whoa!
Uncalled for. 😅
totally called for. cordelia is xander's third priority and she knows it and has complained about it previously.
Funny you said about Trick and Spike getting along, the guy who played Trick auditioned for Spike initially!
10:18 hahahaha she randomly pulls a headshot of Oz outta nowhere
Not Ross coming out of you with UNAGIII lmao
The guy playing the demon with knife like things that pop out of his arms to throw is Chad Stahelski. He is the director of the John Wick films.
I love band candy.
Or two slayers might make a town safer as most people can't beat one slayer, not two.
Don't get me started on Xander/Willow.
PB Crazed was a shoutout from the crew to the Buffy fans on the Bronze Buffy website, aka Posting Board.
I heard about a nod to the online fans before, but never found it.
@@gungho1284 I can no longer remember who put "PB Crazed" on there. I believe it was someone who posted to the Posting Board from time to time themselves.
SPOILERS FOR ANY OF THE ORIGIN STORIES OF THE MOVI, THE MOVIE'S SCRIPT, AND _THE ORIGIN_ COMIC
Xander wants what he can't have. The second Willow doesn't crush on him he tells her he loves her, and is disappointed when she says Oz's name upon waking up, and now in this episode kisses her. All of this while he's also dating Cordelia. Willow what did you ever see in him? Not that she's any better in the _Homecoming_ episode's situation.
_Band Candy_ shows the reasons why Joyce felt like she was just beginning to parent in S1 of BtVS. In my headcanon, how she acts when eating the cndy was how she acted until Buffy burnt down Hemry High's gym.
Willow and Xander...yep, be careful what you wish for. Because they'll give it to you, in the worst way. (Gotta love those immature teenage hormones!)
Before moving to Sunnydale, Buffy was pretty much on the same wavelength as Cordelia,, so the strategy \whiteboard for Homecoming demonstrates her vapid past. Although Xander has hung out with willow at the Bronze many times, Willow has never glammed up for a social event like homecoming before. This can put a spanner in the works of most platonic friendships.
You can get pig's blood at some butcher's shop and Asian markets.
Blood pudding is a thing a lot of people make. Butcher shops supply people with the necessary ingredient all the time so it's not even weird to ask for.
apparently there was a deleted scene that mentioned Fate being out of town in Band Candy... not sure why they cut it
On the other hand if I were a vampire and I was in a town with TWO slayers I would find somewhere else to be.
Just to clear some things up, Eliza Dushku was emancipated at 14 for the movie True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jami Lee Curtis.
Oh, Cass! your face at 9:45! Welcome to the BuffyVerse! 😆
The size of Sunnydale shrinks and expands based on the episode, but I'm pretty sure it only has one hospital.
I was very certain what the thumbnail was a reaction to, and now I've confirmed it. Xillow/Wander came a season too late.
Homecoming and Band Candy are such good episodes, and they are both lighthearted too. We get to meet the Mayor, finally, and his creepy cheerfulness. Homecoming unfortunately starts the "romance" between Xander and Willow which is universally hated. An example of Joss giving you exactly what you wanted, but at a time when you absolutely didn't want it. Band Candy. What to say about Band Candy other than that it is Iconic from start to finish. Every moment of it is memorable.
Band Candy is such a fun one, it only gets better on a rewatch once you've seen the whole series! Loved what you said about Trick and Spike probably getting along well, very true.
Band candy is a favorite of mine, it's so much fun. It's the first time you get more than a glimpse of Giles young self ripper, also your reaction to Xander and willow kiss is the best I've seen so far
Summers you drive like a spaz! 😂
Not unagi, whatever that is - Angel is doing Tai Chi. Probably similar in nature, Tai Chi is a meditative exercise regimen which is also a slowed down martial art.
Japanese fresh water eel. Took 5 seconds.
@@tananario and clearly when she mentioned it while Angel was doing Tai Chi, seafood would have been irrelevant, which leads me to believe she was referring to something else. Don't be dickish.

@@ceciliagio thanks! Not a show I watched much of.
I was thinking Karate Kid and misremembered Mr. Miyagi :D
Band Candy was a weird case in Buffy's writers room. There is a rule about never write a spec for a show you want to be hired. However Jane Espenson pitched a Buffy story idea for his Mutant Enemy interview. Joss changed the idea a bit (of course and, even more, during the first 3 seasons) but it was mostly Espenson's idea.
Faith is my favourite character in the Buffy verse. The character is so complex and has such a deep storyline that you have to actually think about unlike other characters in tv where they just spoon feed you the information about them
The irony of the whole episode is it starts of buffy not being trusted because of her age and it turns out buffy shows her resposibility and maturity more than the adults by the end
Faith had to be a wishy washy for a while because Eliza wasn’t 18 yet.
She was emancipated so that really wasn't the issue. Just an after the fact excuse by the fans.
I thought Buffy was going to win Homecoming but when they said it was a tie I knew they would both lose
Oh no, I binged all your Buffy episodes in 2 days and now I'm lost without more🤣🤣🤣
"I can do that too girl, look" lmao
you dont understand the excitement i have for your buffy reactions theyre me fave yt videos!!
It's not literally reverting people to sixteen, just making them less responsible and stripping away all their adulting skills. Joyce is a bit too old to have known who Juice Newton was at 16 (she was a thing in the early eighties and Buffy was born in 81, and we know Joyce wasn't a mother at 16 because she said she met Buffy's dad at university), and Giles had his rebellious phase a few years later, when he was university-aged. It also explains why some of the other adults act more like rowdy preteens than teenagers.
I think most British people have at least two accents. There's the one you got from the area you grew up in & then the one you use for work. Totally believable that Giles would have used a much more... common accent with his mates when he was younger.
That is true. I always joke that my mother has her normal voice and her “phone voice” and she can switch between the two at the drop of a hat 😂.
@@asimplealtarRP isn’t that posh. It’s the standard accent used in media. Think about American news. Pretty much all media use the same General American (sometimes called “Standard American”) accent. As a result most Americans have the same accent as the more regional ones are fading away or have already gone extinct. I looked this up. Doesn’t take long.
@@tananario Every single British person (who is not posh) would describe RP as posh. RP is so posh that the only people who use it unironically are the royal family.
Side note: Anthony is from Camden Town in central London so his teenage accent in this ep is basically (probably a little exaggerated) the accent he would have had before he went to LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts).
I hated absolutely EVERYTHING about the Willow/Xander thing. I never wanted them to get together, so I was glad when she moved on from her crush on him and super happy when she started dating Oz. I was very much let down when they decided to go this route with them.
Everything? I wish you'd reconsider... I'd love for you to walk that back....
@@havok6280 What was there to like about it?
Faith is not in some episodes and is light in others, because Eliza was only 17 at the time, so they could only work her so many hours. Some may wonder "But why wasn't she in this episode at all/for those minimum hours". While they were doing these scenes with the other cast, they were able to shoot Faith scenes for other episodes where she would be more prominent or more needed. So for the episodes she is in, they shot her for a lot of time (when you include rehearsals and reshoots) but spread it out over weeks.
22 isn't even a bad ACT score. Like, 50th percentile is 18 so 22 is already better than average (and that's the average of people who bother to take the ACT, which is more competitive than overall average). And 24 is like, the *goal* score for a lot of people. On a retake you probably could've actually score that high, my second time taking the ACT was +2 from my original.
Congrats, you've come to the storyline everyone hates!
(I was a teen when S3 aired and would've dropped anyone for Willow, so I don't hate it.)
How many people noticed that Faith asked Buffy to the dance?
They do need to give Buffy some room to make her own decisions, because of her age, BUT Buffy needs to get there by talking to them about it, rather than lying to them. I mean the Angel thing adds more complexity and a reason to lie, but just saying that putting the Angel thing to the side, Buffy could demonstrate that she's mature enough to take that step into adulthood by talking to them about it than by trying to basically trick them, lie, or use them against each other.
All these terrible romantic decisions Buffy, Willow & Xander are making are crazy. It's almost like they're children or something...
Or worse: teenagers.
@@bigdream_dreambig teenagers are children
@@pieceofgosa A specific transitional subset, sure.
@@bigdream_dreambig "specific transitional subset" ?!? Bruh...
@@pieceofgosa What? Teens are a specific subset of children that are in the process of transforming into adults, yes?
What do the kids say these days....hash tag Ripper is my hero. Wish he had his spin off. And when he said Giles you could tell he remembered torturing him
6:18 PUPPY!!!
In Homecoming Faith going up to Scott and scaring off his new girlfriend is kind of badass and shows how good a friend to Buffy she can be. Having said that, can we really blame Scott for breaking up with Buffy? I know we all love her, and therefor feel compelled to take her side, but She was constantly flaking on him and ditching him to spend time with Angel. Which are all valid things, but ultimately, He was her rebound BF, and therefor never a long-term thing. I got the impression he was going to break up with her already, and that is why he hadn't asked her to the dance yet, but also breaking up with someone is not the thing you do right in front of their friends, so he got put in an awkward situation, and he broke up with her as soon as he could.
Come on Ms. Cass. It was just a clothes fluke. 9:48 You never had?
Also, footsies is a legitimate sport. 27:39.

"Ah.. salmon skin roll" 😂
10:00 feel what you gotta feel Cass. We've all been there.
I find it so confusing to think it could be more dangerous to have two slayers in one town. It's definitely LESS dangerous. The slayer is the greatest warrior in the world and her presence keeps a lot of creatures away for fear of her. Running toward 2 slayers at once would be suicide.
I know I harp on this but if ppl watched the original movie they would know by now, Buffy WAS a prom queen type in her old school

Giles changes his accent to sound more like Spike under the effects of the candy
No, Tony Head just uses his actual accent. Which Marsters based his Spike voice on. From an in-universe perspective, the whole posh RP accent Giles normally speaks with is a put-on
@@ArsGratiaArtis85 yeah i was just meaning that Giles sounds different. He sounds like Spike

@@ThammuzBabylon yes, I think so. I was just meaning the character changed his way of speaking
Giles and Joyce listening to tales of brave Ulysses will always get me. Sigh.

10:24 ..."This perfect man?".....🙊
I always thought that the candy made Xander even younger and immature like when he was 5 but not a complete regression because it was meant for older people because Willow said that they dated when they were younger so I thought the candy bought back that feeling in Xander. Willow was just feeling it though which always made me sad.
Heh, we all knew what that face in the thumbnail was for
With Buffy and Faith there is a lot of fanfiction about them
I thought this was a good, but not one of the best episodes of S3. We have two competitions running side by side Slayerfest 98 and The Homecoming Queen as well with Buffy and Cordelia becoming obsessed by it. We see some interesting reveals with Willow and Xander begin to have actual real feelings for each other now, when he sees Willow in her dress and dance slowly, and kiss. Cordelia facing down the Cowboy Vampire is a great scene, and the Mayor ( one the the most entertaining characters in the show ) and Trick now working together as well, we just know there is gonna be trouble with these two. Get ready for E6 it's a fan favourite and hilarious banger!
Ah, Mr PItt. Forgot about him in this show
I hated the cheating, but I loved the faces you made during it (as well as I liked seeing the focus on Willow). The mayor is not really a weirdo, he just is a germophobe and shows certain behaviours pretty common nowadays.
Band Candy has so many nuances. I wonder if they will cause any repercussions? Thanks for the reaction, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's not that they're teenagers, they're human.. people cheat. Not that I think it's okay or would ever abide by or do it personally.. but I think we make WAY too big a deal out of it.. Like we act SO fucking blown away at the very notion of it.. yet EVERYBODY lies about all sorts of things.. That's just the way it is.
Wonder when Cass realizes Giles is a hot dad-- oh here we go.
First time Willow does something really bad.
yay cass posted more buffy reactions! was watching canada's drag race new season premiere but oop i'll go back to it.

Band Candy is one of my very favorites in the entire series. Goofy tagalong teen Snyder is just too damn good 😂
"The mayor comes off as an odd guy." Understatement of the year! I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the Willow and Xander thing. I didn't like it when this premiered, and I LOATHE it now. True, it brings the drama and is 100% on-par with Xander's character, but Willow?! Yes, she's had this major crush on Xander most of her life, but she moved on. She and Oz are in a really good place at this point, and the idea of her character being a cheater is just... And the show should've used Faith soooo much more. I love her with my whole heart.
haven't watched, I just came here to place my bet on how your thumbnail face is about xillow
Uh... that's not the only shipping in "Band Candy"...😎👍
Teenage hormones can be a lot to handle. Cheating sucks for sure but have you ever fallen for 2 people at the same time? Maybe not but that can really mess with your brain. Especially at this age.
Faith isn't in some episodes, or has a limited presence, because Eliza Dushku was actually a minor during filming and there were hours limits on how much she could work.
Also, Halloween episodes exist in every season from 2 onward and are always some of the best, right up there with Buffy's birthday episodes.
So her preference to go in blind doesn’t mean much.
