I love Joe’s character. The fact that he chose to lose, rather than attack his friend’s injury to win, says so much about his sense of honour and loyalty.
Something I've noticed, don't know if it was intentional. There are five 'main' protagonists in this story: Peco, Smile, Kazama, Kong and Sakuma. "Defeats and setbacks! Loss and grief! Isolation and turmoil! Anguish and despair! Nihilism and ruin!" Peco had to rise up after losing to Kong and Sakuma and accept that he wasn't as good as he felt he was. (Defeat and setback) Kong lost his place on the Chinese squad and after losing to Kazuma had to overcome his grief and accept his new place in the world as an instructor/player. (Loss and grief) Kazama felt that he was, and had to be, the best player and that put him in a lonely position. It caused him to isolate himself before matches in the bathroom and wonder why, or who for, he was playing table tennis. (Isolation and turmoil) Sakuma has astigmatism and it made it hard for him to compete at a high level in table tennis, no matter how hard he worked himself. He fought with himself for a long time but eventually had to find other joys in life besides table tennis. (Anguish and despair) Smile is often saying quotes like, "Ping pong is just a way to pass the time until you die." and other not-so-subtle stabs at the pointlessness of life. Smile was essentially floating through life with no purpose, existing not to burden others. He had to turn into the emotionless killer robot ping pong player so that he could become the (somewhat) well-adjusted teacher at the end. (Nihilism and ruin) Really cool and subtle anime, wish I could watch it all for the first time again.
Not enough people talk about the story from his perspective more so the younger people. Koizumi is more human than everyone , he was the guy who had too much heart to crush his opponent and held himself back and clearly had so much regret over it but was willing to give everything to Smile. He was the underrated character in this here show!

I decided to watch it _because_ I care so much about aesthetics. Needless to say both that and the story made it one of my all time favorites.

プライドが高くて全力で取り組んだり、全力で負けたりすることができないのすごく分かる。
この頃の月本の場合勝つことに対してプライドがないから勝ち負けにこだわってないんだと思う。
頑張って練習して負けて、悔しくてもっと努力して、とかではなく
ただ普通にやってたらほかより上手くなっただけでそこに意味を感じないから勝っても負けてもどっちでもいいと思ってるって印象。
逆になんでみんなが勝ったぐらいで嬉しがったり負けたぐらいで悔しがったりするのか理解できない、みたいな。
悔しさもウケるかどうか？、でも差別下で大衆にプライドが高いって勘違いで病んで飛び降りて周りは弱いってアホほどあるシンプルなのに🤔
日和見も個性？もそのバランスさえも、見て学んでいただいて孤独の本質的な？部分埋めて安心を得てると、そんなものが一個置けりゃしんじられないほど楽になると思うのに（笑）

I was actively playing table tennis when i first saw this anime. And i can relate to everything very well.
The meaning extends past table tennis.
"You can't cross the sea on such thin wings" is advice for all parts.

しかし小泉がなかなか打ってこないのを不審に思った月本がレシーブをする為の構えを外す
その瞬間に小泉がサーブをしてきてそれに対して月本が反射的にリターンしてしまう
本来であればそのサーブは無効、やり直しになるが月本がリターンしてしまったことで月本がリターンできる状態であったと審判に判断されてしまった
要はレシーブする構えを外していたからいまの点は無効ではないかって抗議したってことですね
審判の髪型のせいで笑うw
