An "advanced" player with that drill should have a specific target to aim for.
    Doh!

    • @EssentialTennis

"Advanced" players could work through all of those drills with a wide range of different focus points besides accuracy, whisper. Any of them could be used to develop better footwork patterns, conditioning and recovery, racquet head speed (besides the volley one, of course), dynamic balance, kinetic chain usage, or even integrating a new and improved technique habit into a more stressed, real life type of environment. In each of those instances we, as coaches, would be strongly stressing that the player NOT focus at all on what the outcome of the shot is. Otherwise the chances of them achieving high quality practice of the other element becomes very low.
So, it all depends. What tool is the coach trying to get the player to sharpen? Accuracy and consistency certainly could be it, but its only one possibility. Thanks for watching. -Ian

can you make a video?? oh never mind lazy butt

Obviously if u had actually watched the video, you would have realized that these drills are NOT MEANT FOR AIMING. The first drill is clearly for reaction time, speed, and helping u get to the ball. If you actually watch tennis pros, you will notice that if someone smashes a forehand right into the corner, the pro returning is only hoping that he can even return the ball.

@@q.s.4349 I have to ask, If you cannot aim your shots under pressure with purpose are you an advanced or are you a beginner to intermediate player?
If you are and advanced player, is simply over the net and in, sufficient any more?
If you are an advanced player, would you not want a quantifiable and verifiable metric to determine whether you are improving your technical and tactical outcome to bring purpose to your precious on court practice time?
Did YOU read the title of the video?

good stuff . Great drills. from playing on the ATP tour and coaching 10 years now. I have had 25 players get. NCAA scholarships and 2 play pro. The key is 1. The kid has to love competition 2. handle pressure ( Family , school, life ,choices ) 3. Execution and skills and game. I have seen kids practice 5 hours a day and when its match time they play tight. I have seen kids play once a week and win it tournaments . its a mindset. I will have 2 kids play a tie breaker and have the other 20 plus kids cheer one of the players and just boo and harass the other player and then teach them to compete .

On the swinging volley, the "feeder" said "hips" but she isn't really using her hips at all. She's slightly twisting and hitting WIDE OPEN. Technically, not very efficient. Needs to turn and make stance at lease neutral so she can step into the ball. That would increase her power and racquet-head speed tremendously. I do this same drill with my advanced juniors and they crush the ball. Great drill when done correctly.

love the volley drills, esp. mid-court. always liked x drill. would like to have seen ian stretched out comparably to novak in example vid for the baseline drill. (i think salzenstein had a wrist-builder vid for the tour-level swat). thanks for the video!

So why isn't Ian doing the scissors kick on the overheads he's going back for then recover? There should be at least 1 of them during an overhead drill like this.

The first drill was difficult man ! If i get such balls i end up hitting them flat and it goes out or into the net
