    Great progressions! Actual tennis pros can't explain what they are doing....as they have been doing it from they were 4 years old 😂 Thanks for breaking it down, Ian!

    Best explanation I've heard yet about how spin affects the trajectory of the ball in flight: high pressure created on the side of the spin direction and low pressure on the other side. Really helpful. Thanks. Would love to hear a corresponding description of the effect spin has on the movement at the point of contact between the ball and the court surface.

    Let’s go! I just started working on the kick serve today. I hit about a hundred balls and 2 of them looked like really good kick serves. I’ll take it 😂

    Good video I like the idea of swing past the ball. The problem with kick serves isn't just the technique its that if you don't have a powerful serve - they are too slow.

    • @EssentialTennis

      You're right, didn't have time to get into that in this lesson, but huge racquet head speed is needed to make a ball really KICK.

    Even in a heavy topspin/kick serve, there's much more sidespin than topspin. They measured Pete Sampras' kick serve and the topspin component was only 35% of his total spin. If you want to hit a pure topspin serve, the racquet's long axis has to be completely horizontal at contact, which is impossible for an overhead serve.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  5 місяців тому +3

      I don't think it's impossible....but it would be incredibly awkward 😆

    Thank you for showing me why I've been struggling to get the ball to kick, I've been rotating at the same time as hitting the ball instead of after. One question though, should the ball be hit above the head of just in front of it? I find if I hit the ball over my head, my racket has not fully pronated, this makes the ball slice with a flat serve swing path.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  5 місяців тому

      Directly over head is far enough to make plenty of topspin! I don't recommend trying to go any further than that, takes a ton more balance and strength without much upside.

    Brushing up the back of the ball is just a nice place for people to start, it doesn't matter if you're going through at an angle. You also say you don't like the 7-2 path idea but then quote it several times afterwards, confusing stuff

    Great video, Ian. As usual. Your new series is soooo great!
    BUT...
    Criticising other coaches and showing Simon as an example of a bad coach was condescending and completely unnecessary. There was nothing wrong with his explanation (I've just watched it) and throwing accusations at him left a lot of bad taste. I'm disappointed.
    BTW, what happened to Simon's comment? It was here a few minutes ago, but when I refreshed the page it disappeared.

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  5 місяців тому +1

      I'm sorry that the commentary in this video comes off AT ALL like I'm saying Simon gave bad information. An editor grabbed that clip as an example of a coach talking about the "7 to 2" concept, not because it was an example of incorrect coaching. The words I'm saying during that part of the video make it pretty clear which is which, and I didn't name anybody giving bad information, but I completely understand how it could be thought that I'm criticizing him indirectly. It wasn't the intention of the lesson at all.
      Yes, Simon commented saying he was really disappointed with the use. I apologized and offered to talk about it. He removed the comment shortly after I replied. I'm going to pin this comment so viewers have an explanation/context.

    • @UndulatusAsperatus
      @UndulatusAsperatus 5 місяців тому +1

      Lesson learnt - it's never a good idea to criticise anybody and show your direct competitors on the screen. It's very easy to run into issues, even if you have good intentions.
      Your videos are well made, exceptionally high quality, you are a GREAT coach (of the 3 best on youtube in my opinion, but I will keep the other 2 names for myself). Just explain the things your way and people will immediately recognise the quality of your coaching. Technique can be explained in many different ways and what works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. If there is nothing fundamentally wrong with someone's teaching, better to refrain from comment.
