- The complete DIY guide on how to change a shift knob and shift boot in a mark 5 Volkswagen Golf, Rabbit, Jetta, or GTI. I thoroughly explain all steps, from techniques used to tools needed. Custom shift boots and knobs like the one shown in the tutorial will give your interior a whole new look. The car used in the video is my 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit.

Great to see a video that actually just gets straight to the point ! Most videos are like "this is the car, unlock the car, now your gonna want to open the door and get in, now find the shift knob, thus is the shift knob blah blah blah..........."
Nice one. Just replaced my GTI's original vinyl gator with a nice leather one. Your instructions are bang on and concise. Well made video. Thank you!
+autobahnproven Thanks man, I'm glad it helped!
Keep up the good work and thanks for getting straight to the point!

Thank you for responding, I should of told you it's an automatic, I honestly don't know what the inside looks like the car is still at VW
No problem, I don't have much experience with changing shift boots on automatics and i'm not sure if the process is the same but i'll dig around on some Volkswagen forums and see what I can come up with.
Here's a forum I found changing the boot on a MK5 automatic, maybe the 2014 will be the same or at least similar? Best of luck to you, sorry if I couldn't help that much.

nice thx
If I have an MK7 GTI, can I use an MK6 shifter or did they change the shape of the boot on the MK7 series?
+largol33t1 I'm not 100% sure but I'd assume they'd be pretty similar. Check out some Volkswagen forums to be sure!
I've been looking for a new gear knob but can't seem to find a website and store where they sell. i have a Volkswagen rabbit 2007. can you give me the site where you bought your new knob? I'm in need of one greatly.
+Soul Echoz I used the same knob I took off
hi i hope you can help me, I need to change the shifter to a VW POLO 2013, and I have trouble because I want to place at the time of the change in velocity rises, as if fell short, I want to know if there is any way I can place without this happening. Thank you!
Hi, i'll help you the best I can but i'm having a little trouble understanding the question. What velocity and time are you talking about / trying to avoid?
can you advise if you can change shift knob in a 2014 VW Beetle, I have weak hands and can not push button in to shift
Thank you
Are you in the process of changing it now? if so, do the insides look the same for that year the same as my 2007? I'll help you the best I can, so let's start there.
Cum se schimba becu la scrumiera la golf 5
can you do one for a dsg model?
I would if I had access to one but unfortunately I don't :(
can you put a jdm shift knob on a jetta? because i know the thread is 12x 1.5, but i can't seem to find jdm shift knob with that dimension. or would a universal shift knob work?
If you can find one that you're sure is threaded the same that will be the best. I know some come with adapters though to fit different cars so look into that too. Good luck!
thank you! i did find some cool ones on ebay.
More videos please? Subbed
Tjaden Stevens More videos to come, I promise. I need to get and install a gas door and a new grill, and I have a few other plans for the car, and i'll make videos on everything!
Do you have to unstaple the boot if you just want to change the shift knob?
+Cj Kleiner I don't think you'll have to. You can try it without unstapling it and then if that doesn't work unstaple it and try again. Good luck!
+Cj Kleiner If you want to change just the knob, you can remove the silver ring that he used an Ice pick on. Word of caution though, it can't be reattached, So whatever knob you get will have a saggy boot (lol) unless you figure a way around that.
Looks good. You should get matching leather seats.
+spoonman73 thanks! And I want to upgrade to some red and black plaid GTI seats eventually.. Or to a whole GTI haha
would glue work instead of staples?
Da.
is it any different if i want to do one out of an 08 jetta, auto.
nick shaffer I'm not 100% sure but I would guess that the process is different because it's an auto.
+nick shaffer the auto would be different
+nick shaffer not the year.. they're both mkVs
awesome shift boo! no I won't be scaredet do re boo my shift boo.
What did you use to clamp the ring down?
For the metal ring I used CV boot crimping pliers that I had laying around from changing my CV boot.
Oh ok cool. That helps a lot, thanks.
No problem, Good luck on your project!
CashedOutCars
can you use any kind of pliers?
If you end up with the ring clamped down then yes, but it is much easier with crimping pliers.
Is that a wabbit?! Lol
The cost of tools needed to install a new leather shifter boot is way over its cost... It's OK if you do this every other day in your shop but for a once in a lifetime job is prohibitive. Thanks for the video.
+Pkwic yeah tools are expensive for anything if you're going to use them once. Once you build up a collection you'll be pretty much set for life. Or you could find a friend with tools. Good luck!
hey can u do coilovers on the mk5?
+MangoJuice as of right now I don't have plans to instal coils on my Rabbit.. if I have to replace any suspension components I'll make a video and if it's struts it'll be the same process to instal coil overs although I'm hoping I won't need to
MangoJuice i know this is late but raceland has a really good mk5 coilover installation video. i followed that video to install mine and it was perfect
Custom made? You could've just bought one that looks like that.
Yeah that's true but my dad does automotive upholstery for a living so he had the knowledge and material laying around so it all worked out.
Terrific videos. Keep them coming!
Thank you, will do! I've got a lot planned for the Rabbit and the Miata and I'll be making videos as I work on them!
