It’s a cardinal sin in the automotive repair industry to disconnect the positive cable first. It should be disconnect negative first, reconnect negative last, especially if you’re using metal tools to loosen and remove the cables. This helps to prevent accidental grounding of the positive terminal and causing additional electrical problems. Additionally if you have a memory saver that plugs into the OBDII connection you may avoid any reprogramming. The memory saver can be purchased or rented at most auto parts stores. It requires a external 12V source such as another good battery. Otherwise thanks for a good video.
Thank you so much for posting this video. When I first looked at it I thought for sure it was going to be an issue, but with you showing what was done I had mine replaced in less than 15 minutes. Just don't forget to reconnect the vent tube located on the negative side of the battery. Other than that both cables lifted easy, and no programming was lost. Thanks again...
Man I just replaced my battery yesterday and could not figure out why the check engine light wouldn’t go off! I had to do the ignition thing for my throttle body programming! And everywhere wanted 160-200 for the battery. I finally found one at sams for 125! Thanks for the vid.
Here are a few extra items for this video. First, Hold down bolts, and yes I said BOLTS there are two. The one shown in the video plus one on the front of the battery. It's hidden my the trim. As for bolt sizes the hold down are 13mm and the neg cable is 10mm.
I may be able to follow your detailed directions. I drained my battery just yesterday, and couldn’t figure out how to open my trunk, much less change the battery. I’ll try it out! Thank-You!
hey I saw your reply to this video, ok I’m having issues with the seats not responding to the fobs. you already know how you can set the seats for 2 drivers I have 2 fobs, one for me and one for wifey. but after resetting the ecu and reprogramming the fobs, the seats are. Not responding. what can I do?
Thanks for a great video! Just to be clear about positive and negative terminals. Those that posted positive off first and negative on last are correct. HOWEVER, after just replacing the battery, if you follow that correct way and put the positive on first, it is nearly impossible to put the negative one on. The large positive connector is in the way. So I took off the positive, easily put the negative one on and THEN carefully put on the positive. That is why the technician did it this way. Also, after battery install, I did turn car on (not started) and waited 30 seconds, then started the car held down window switch to open window and close all windows to program them. Let car run 3 minutes and all is fine. Again, great video and thanks!
Thanks for you quick and succinct video. I was looking under the hood for the darn battery, lol! Also, thanks for explaining the lever catch on the positive connector, and the important bit about programming the windows for auto-down capability. As others mentioned before me, Be careful of the vent tube. Pull it out/disconnect it before you pull the battery, or you will break it (like I did 😜) My vent connector, the hard plastic 90' elbow shaped part, cracked, but did not completely separate. I was able to temporarily repair it with a bit of RTV gasket maker. It will hold until I can get another plastic elbow from the auto parts store.
I LOVE UA-cam!! You just turned the battery removal from a 1/2 hr job and lots of cussing into 5 min. job. thanks. The install was also easy. However, I'm I the only one who has more trouble with the whole down screws than anything else?
thanks man! I have the same car and just bought a new battery but was afraid to change it myself since I it looked a little complicated , but now I might be able to do it.good looks!
don't forget you have to re-calibrate the car when you turn it on. something like turn the key to ON for 30 seconds, then turn on the ignition for 3 minutes. it says in the manual exactly what you have to do
Criss P thanks for posting this video and man 1st off nice looking Cadillac to say it is a 2012 I got a 2013 and I love mines and I keep mines clean especially the leather interior so it can stay looking sharp. Man anyone should know that you posted this for your own self not claiming to be an expert but to educate the people who have a car like this how to save some money lol. I needed to watch this because this is my 1st Cadillac and I needed to know how to unhitch the battery because I was trying to replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor and when you do that you at suppose to unhitch the battery to clear the code. Thanks for the educationally information and once again sweet ride bro!!!
Eric Lindsey yes I do. One of my power door locks stopped working and in the morning when I drive the car it makes a creaking noise with the suspension on speed bumps, then goes away throughout the day. You?
My 2011 CTS Coupe is a little different. The back seat does not fold down and there is no door key, only a fob. The doors unlatch electrically by a paddle switch hidden under the flush door panel but only if the fob is nearby. The only real key is for the trunk, which pulls out of the fob when pushing a button. There is a small cable in the truck to pull to open the drivers side door, just under the trunk lid and just left of center. My battery has a small black lever that moves horizontal to release the terminal. I don't know anything about the window resets but it might be the same. Great video!
Thank you, followed your instructions and in less that 15 minutes job complete. Noteworthy, by far the easiest car/SUV to change oil, if you pay anyone more than $60 for Mobil 1 oil changes you are getting ripped off.
Rather than try to reach the trunk release handle thru the tiny opening in the back seat..... I attached a battery to the jumper cable spots under the hood... That was enough juice to allow me to electronically push the door button to release and open the trunk
This is so easy to do it I'm remember when I take my car to the dealer and they say if you wan a new one it's gonna cost to you almost 600 hundred dollars and I say wtf and I. Ask just for the battery cost me over 400 and I when to auto zone I pay 147 for the same battery so guys don't take it to the dealer doing by yourself
You saved my ass this mor6ning because I was all messed up fixed the problem quickly and now my wife is out shopping easy instructions straight to the point.
I have a 09 Cadillac CTS after changing the battery and putting the new one the car radio does not turn on and the AC does not turn off do you have any suggestions??
Ii have a 2009 cts, is it normal for the keys to get stuck in the ignition when the battery is dead or low on these cars?? Also ok so I have two keys that can start the car, I can go into a store and keep the same key in my hand that I took out the ignition, get back in the car , and it won't turn over at all, use the other key and it starts right away, is this normal??
So what if you can't open the trunk from back seat or the button on drivers side door in a 2008 cadillac cts #2 Radio lights up shows info on what songs are playing etc but no sound ? 😕 Passenger side temp won't work when trying to up the temp or down the temp. Passenger door won't open from outside? Help! Plzzzz someone. Also what's the best but cheapest battery for 2008 cadillac cts?
Have a 2011 CTS With a dead battery, Changed it but now NONE of the climate controls work Defrosters F & R Heater Temp L & R AC Nothing any suggestions
You missed the vent tube connection. You can see the small red cap on the top right of the battery in the video. On the other side is the same type of opening that connects to a vent tube. This will keep your battery from exploding in your trunk (kind of important I guess huh?). Otherwise great video. My '08 CTS has the quick release levers on both the positive and negative terminal connections. Super easy battery swap. The only presets that did not immediately work were the auto down windows (fixed by doing what your video recommended), and the tire pressure sensors. These may come back over time or I can reset later (instructions also posted on UA-cam)>
Steve Bagwell must not matter as there aren’t any reports of that. Also the roadside guy left it there. Shows how important that was. Battery is fine to date.
Criss, thanks but I'll go with the safety recommendation. Doesn't really seem like an optional type thing. The exception would be if you put in a sealed battery (the one in your video was not).
Steve Bagwell Ill check again and see if theres a tube to reconnect. The battery before it never had one and being that theres warranty on the battery, it would be stupid for them to forget that. Also he did mention something about it being sealed. I paid extra for the better battery. So who knows. Just trying to help
Thanks steve, after I pulled battery out, i saw the small tube hanging out in the compartment with a small barbed connector. Couldnt see where it pulled from, wondered what it was for. All I could see was a hole n battery top cap and i deduced that it may have been plugged in there for venting gasses. Your comment confirmed. now to go shopping for battery. Gots to get this car this car going or my wife will be driving my truck! noooooooo! haha just kidding.
Philosophy... removing a bad battery is a negative experience (- then +). And replacing with a new battery is a positive experience (+ then -). In other words, you are 100% correct. Non the less risk of explosion due to the large spark igniting battery acid fumes.
This video was very helpful. There is definitely some variance amongst the model years however. I encountered two battery mounting brackets, one of which was extremely difficult to reach on the right side of the battery (not mentioned in this video). A 10" socket extender was required in order to remove this one, just a heads up to anyone getting ready to swap theirs.
Here's what I recommend. Keep your AAA membership current. Mine was expired for 5 years. Renewed at $80 per year. They sent a AAA battery tech. He confirmed my battery in my CTS was dead. Sure, could get a better deal, but they did a good job providing it. And my local Sam's Club have nitwit do-not-care employees. At least the AutoZone manager cared about the purpose of his work.

Locating the battery in my in-law's car and understanding the "how to" was invaluable. Thank you!

Thanks man! Worked like a charm! The battery has two brackets to remove before the battery would come out. Thanks again!
Thank you very much for this video. This is the ONLY video i found. You saved me much time, money, and most of all frustration over doubt.
Man I just replaced my battery yesterday and could not figure out why the check engine light wouldn’t go off! I had to do the ignition thing for my throttle body programming! And everywhere wanted 160-200 for the battery. I finally found one at sams for 125! Thanks for the vid.

Good video that hit all the questions I had about swapping out my CTS Sport Wagons battery - thanks for this!
Thank you for the clear explanation of how to replace a CTS battery.
Thank you for the post. Very informative and worked as reccemended..
Your video made changing wife's battery a piece of cake, thank you
Sincerely, thanks a ton for explaining those terminal levers. I thought for sure I was going to break it before I watched this!
Thanks for the video! I figured out the positive terminal but a wire was covering the negative's bolt holding it in so I was confused.
thanks man! I have the same car and just bought a new battery but was afraid to change it myself since I it looked a little complicated , but now I might be able to do it.good looks!

Thanks for taking the time to post this
Thanks for that info 👍😊
You were a big help bro thx for posting
Thanks for posting, if not for this I would have probably been in the same predicament
don't forget you have to re-calibrate the car when you turn it on. something like turn the key to ON for 30 seconds, then turn on the ignition for 3 minutes. it says in the manual exactly what you have to do
He said that already

Do you have to use a battery tender while I go get the new one? For a 2008 Cadillac CTS?
Does the battery physically fit through the access panel or does the larger side piece need to be removed?
Thanks for the video!
Good job with this video. Thanks.
Battery guy you’re cool rock in dude

Does the restart work for 2009? I’m just wondering cuz my check engine light is on and I have to clear it before I can go get my emissions.
Is the possibility of a bad battery also the reason for the security light not going out?
Rather than try to reach the trunk release handle thru the tiny opening in the back seat..... I attached a battery to the jumper cable spots under the hood... That was enough juice to allow me to electronically push the door button to release and open the trunk
Thank you, your video was well done, Educational and very helpful. Thanks, again.
you're welcome
On my other cars, I always remove the negative cable first. And put back the negative cable last...
Also have to remember to disconnect and reconnect the venting hose. You don't want this to vent to the trunk and then inside cabin.
Thank you so much!!!

Thanks, good info.
Does anyone know if the positive disconnect is the same on a 2014 CTSV-COUPE ?
Thank you thank you, just saved me. I got it done
Thanks bro
Great video my guy 👍
Can u tell where the 2 hoses by the negatie terminal connect to?.. 1 of my came apart and I don't where It goes

Tnx guy > I was wondering why my CTS windows didn't "express" up anymore (after dead batt situation) Tried ur trick > all is well !
Did I misread or were you going to show how to change out the battery??
Have you ever had a side mirror problem cause one of mine doesn't moved
Pnut Oink Side mirror no, but my motor to unlock the drivers door yeah. Cadillac replaced it under warranty when I bought the car used.
Thanks so much very helpful and honest. Totally to help the consumer.

If you cant figure that part out buddy , you best leave it alone
seen a video for a 2012 Cadillac cts that sqid disconnect the negative 1st 🤷
Here's what I recommend. Keep your AAA membership current. Mine was expired for 5 years. Renewed at $80 per year. They sent a AAA battery tech. He confirmed my battery in my CTS was dead. He installed a new battery in 20 minutes having the proper tools. I asked the man what his qualifications were and he said he was an local auto mechanic contracted by AAA. There is nothing on Google or UA-cam about changing the battery on a CTS and you really have to know what you're doing. Jump starting is risky because if you drive to a shop, the battery could go out and your up a creek.
I highly recommend AAA.
You never ever ever disconnect the positive before the negative always do the -1st
Your video helped me out. Thank you. 'Had to change out a battery on a CTS this morning. My takeaway, the clip terminal on positive is pretty questionable, should be replaced with a proper clamp. When I put it back in place, it did not seem very tight which is a huge no-no for vehicle electrical design. The CTS must have been designed by a bunch of greenhorn frat boys. It's a luggy car, the suspension is like a bag of rocks, and the wedge design has terrible driving visibility and blind spots. And if your back goes out, I call it the pretzel car because of how you have to contort to get in and out of the driver's seat. There are several things about that car I HATE and would be happy to give a beat down to the trendy designers compelled to make this "sexy" mess for dumbed Americans. The way i see it. Thess cadillacs r mDe by germans coz of battery positions n the procedures
I paid a little over $200. for the AutoZone premium battery. Good fit. The regular battery there is $150. It was convenient and they had it in stock. In the door, out the door of the AutoZone. Um donate for what?
So you’re just not going to name the size of the bolts ? Nice
Ok I choose Harry and Gary
He did the terminals backwards
I can't believe a roadside assistance guy who does this as a profession put the terminals on the WRONG way... Not good.
The 2008 is completely different.
