    Eterna Forest is one of the most special places in Sinnoh for me. I grew up in Washington state, and have always been around nature quite a bit, and I've really grown to value the feeling of walking through a forest, not knowing exactly where you're going, and just enjoying the beauty of nature. For me, Eterna Forest's theme encapsulates that feeling so perfectly - it's serene, mystical, and so wonderfully melodic... I love this music so much. This music also plays in Snowpoint Temple, the Lost Tower and the Solaceon Ruins, also very mystical locations!
    I have honestly been so scared to remake this video! When I released the original Eterna Forest cover back in 2016, I had no clue it would grow to define me in so many ways. It's my most popular Sinnoh cover by far, and for the longest time, it was the video that I would show people when they asked what kind of music I made, and what my UA-cam channel was all about. The idea of trying to one-up that previous creation in a redone version for the Year of Sinnoh honestly made me so nervous, but I knew it had to be done. I knew I could keep the spirit of the original arrangement intact and make it just a bit better with my current skillset, and I am so happy to say that I think I've succeeded! Also, the date of this video getting uploaded (August 29th 2020) is my 22nd birthday! I wanted to celebrate how far I've come both in terms of my musical skill and also being alive in general by recreating this arrangement in the best way I possibly could.
    The strings, piano and harp were all recorded at a session last December pre-COVID times. We recorded 6 tunes, and this is the 5th tune from that session that I've released. I've been sitting on the footage and audio far longer than I would have liked, but I think that releasing it now is appropriate! :) I opted to exchange the tenor saxophone solo at the beginning of this arrangement before the drop for a clarinet solo, which worked SO well. I wanted a sound that was a bit more simple, transparent, and had more high range, which is exactly what the clarinet brought to the table.
    One of my gripes with the original arrangement of this that I did was that I actually got some of the chords completely wrong! Underneath the melody starting at 0:43, my original harmonization was Ami | Bmi | C | Dmi when it's actually supposed to be Ami | Bmi | Emi | Dmi. It's such a subtle shift, but gives that melody a whole new flavor! I also never bothered to transcribe a lot of the detailed background lines that give the original soundtrack version so much magical flavor, so I made sure to include those (harp, strings, and mandolin at 0:53, 1:09 and 2:27.) The only section I really changed from the 2016 arrangement was the addition of a disco strings buildup at 4:10. It's a little bit out of place on first listen, but there's a good reason why it's there! I've honestly come to associate a lot of my personality and who I am as a person with this piece of music... and this arrangement captures several sides of me, including being quiet around new people (0:00), very over the top energetic when I get excited (1:30), and a more introspective side at times (3:00). I wanted one more section to capture my general goofiness and sometimes out of place silliness, since that's something about myself I've more actively embraced over the past few years (4:10). Sounds personal and a bit cheesy I know, but that's how I am with music! I hope this piece of music connects with you even just a fraction of how strongly it connected with me :)

    Always surreal to hear updated versions of your covers, cause I've heard the original covers of yours probably close to 100 times. (literally) It's like unlocking a different version of a track in a video game. And I can honestly say this one is better, and perfects a lot of parts that the original cover had.

    This video is tremendously important to me, and I am so excited to share it with you! My original Eterna Forest video is by far my most popular Sinnoh cover, and it's also a very personal song to me! Check out the original arrangement if you haven't, and I invite you to compare it to this one! ua-cam.com/video/hRGs8UovlTE/v-deo.html
    I've wanted to redo this song for quite some time, but have always been so nervous to do it because I love the original so much. This video is getting uploaded on August 29th, which is my birthday (it's a good year when birthday aligns with a Saturday upload day haha), and I'm treating this day as a special occasion to finally release this new updated recording. Thanks everyone so much for listening over the years, and long live this version of Eterna Forest :)

    This arrangement is astounding; I think we all can appreciate that. But I’d just like to point out that this seems to be one of your best-edited videos yet. The crop layouts are all super fun and vibrant (0:18 and 4:10 are examples that really stand out)...we see a tasteful return of your classic “snow” effect, paying homage to the original cover of this that served as a first impression for many viewers (myself included)...the camera-work on individual shots of the orchestra is so expressive and dynamic....it’s clear that this project has so many unseen layers of production involved in the filming and editing aspect alone, not to mention the time arranging and practice and coordinating with all those orchestra players! This looks and feels like one of your most professional music videos yet, which is by itself something to be proud of! You’re adding an air of professionalism and respect for the unsung greatness of VGM, which is actively fulfilling, if I remember correctly, one of the foremost goals of this channel.

    • @insaneintherainmusic
      @insaneintherainmusic  4 роки тому +145

      Thank you! I’ve been going light on the snow effects lately since they don’t look as good as I thought on UA-cam with the way that UA-cam handles video compression, but I knew I had to use it to reference the original video! In fact I used a lot of the same particles at the same time haha! And you’re right about the rest of your comment too! I’m treating this very professionally, and there are a LOT of layers that went into making this production a reality... haha

    OKAY so, all the hype and buildup for this moment is WELL worth it, and tbh the music was just as awesome as the original, if not more so in its own way! But, the thing that really got me was the ending. Seeing everyone so happy that the take went well, seeing Carlos on the floor... you can tell this means something to him, and a lot, at that. And you can *see* it. A creator having that glorious experience of one of his greatest works come to fruition right in front of his eyes. The memories, the meaning, he's experiencing it all at once. Carlos, if you're reading this, thank you for showing that experience you had at the end, and thank you for the whole video, too. And most of all, I hope you have a spectacular birthday :)

    I have never played a gen 4 game, so while all of your arrangements are fun to listen to, none of them made me nostalgic or want to play the game just off of that one song. I have no idea what it is about this theme, but somehow it makes me nostalgic and now I just really want to play this game. Thank you carlos for the wonderful arrangements, keep it up!

    This is seriously one of, if not the best arrangement of any VGM song that I have ever heard, hands down. In fact, this is my favorite piece of music that I've heard in quite a long while. The energy, emotional depth, and vibrancy that you bring to this track is insane! There are just so many elements to love throughout. From the excitement and drive of the arpeggiated full band section with that gliding melody line overtop, to small things like the natural textures of the toca seed shaker. Just really great job man! I saw you at MAGfest a few years back in that little cafe bar section in the main lobby, but I can't wait for the day that I get to see you on the main stage with your own big band behind you! Keep it up!

    I listened to the original Eterna Forest a few weeks back and I got such a wave of nostalgia from listening to it, and I get that from this and so much more. It’s just as mysterious and serene as the original but adds so much energy to some parts and it all just sounds so good! Thank you to everyone working on this and all of these videos and Happy Birthday Carlos! It’s really hard to express just how much I love this arrangement but I hope this can suffice.

The feeling I get in my chest whenever I listen to it is indescribable. It always reminds me what kind of power video games and music can hold for people.
    Anyways, great arrangement, Carlos. It really was excellent and I think you did top your original arrangement with this one by a fair margin.

    You know how in the Gold/Silver/Crystal games, when you go back to Kanto, the songs are the same, but updated, and more heroic and nostalgic? This arrangement feels like the equivalent of that for your original version of Eterna Forest. That was the first arrangement of yours I ever heard, my introduction to your music and channel. I may have gotten a lil misty-eyed hearing it again 🥺

    This is beautiful as its own stand-alone piece, but I'm not sure how I feel about it as an adaptation - I feel like the original is a piece that lives through its pauses, its slow tempo and the room it gives itself to breathe.
    Don't get me wrong, I love the energy of your arrangement. It just doesn't fill me with the same peace and tranquility the original version does. Eterna Forest has always been a place of quiet contemplation to me, with a little bit of melancholy hidden in-between.

    • @insaneintherainmusic
      @insaneintherainmusic  4 роки тому +3

      Oh totally agree - this would be very out of place in the game, I think maybe the first 90 seconds as a loop could work in the game, but the rest of the arrangement is just me having fun and telling my own story with the piece!
