- Giant waves, spurred on by El Niño, crashed into the northern shore of Kauai today. No one was hurt in this scene but many cameras and phones were lost to the Pacific Ocean. Spectators (further inland) were knocked over by powerful knee high currents and fumbled their belongings into the receding waters. Jukin Media Verified (Original)

I've been to this beach many times. First time it was calm and there was a very nice pool in the rocks that hung out in all day. We liked it so much we came back the next day only to find it was very rough. I watched a family of tourists get dragged across the lava rocks. By the time they got back to the beach they were all scraped up and bleeding.

This is one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii.

Then you have a lot of sense like the locals. The only drownings I heard of while I was there were tourists - two occurred on Lumaha'i. The locals know the currents and what beaches to avoid during certain times of the year. Lumaha'i is actually one of the most dangerous beaches on Kauai and is only slightly safer during the summer months (this was probably the winter). Those waves could knock anyone off their feet and into open sea in an instant.
@@kristinab1078 Here in Japan, during the terrible 2011 tsunami an entire elementary school was saved because of an old local saying "when the seas goes back, run up the hills." The kids did exactly that and were saved. Unfortunately this saying was not known elsewhere, and the results were more tragic than I wish to remember. You are absolutely right: never underestimate the power of the sea.

A lot of travellers to Kauai don't know, but there are many fatalities in a typical year on the island. Incidents are not broadcast to the world at large so as to avoid alarming people, but if yoiu do not take time to investigate where you are going before you actually arrive, or at least ask locals for safety tips, you could become a statistic.
Same on O'ahu, many tourist die by the ocean and they don't broadcast it, they don't want to lose any tourist that might want to come to visit.

When I lived on Kauai, the only drownings I heard of were tourists. Sad and unnecessary. They underestimate the power of these waves and don't know the currents like the locals. They were likely all tourists in the water that day. Those waves will wash you out to sea in an instant and the locals know where and when to avoid certain beaches.
They weren't tourists; they were locals. The girls all wear thongs, and they had tan skin and black hair. I used to live there too. And they looked like they knew exactly what they were doing. Not sure why you felt compelled to make up something just so you could inject some self-righteous nonsense denigrating "tourists."
@@someguy5035 It wasn't a self-righteous comment. It was my observation in the time period I lived there. I wasn't making a commentary of every drowning that has ever occurred on the island. Obviously, from time to time, locals drown too. However, locals who have lived in a place their entire lives are usually able to make a better judgment call on where and when to swim simply through experience. Tourists often don't have that same level of background information unless they are with someone who knows. I think the take away is that you can never underestimate the power of the ocean even in a gorgeous location.

A dangerous combination, if they get caught in the rip current, they will be thrown around underwater, get slammed against those rocks and get seriously injured. And don't forget the shorebreak...

Lumaha'i Beach was made famous in the movie, "South Pacific." It's very dangerous, all the time, especially in winter. The beach is very long and wide, but almost entirely empty because the water is so dangerous. In summer, swimming at one end to the beach (near where this video was taken) is possible because of a large rock formation 30-40 yards offshore that provides fairly good protection.
Exactly. The Kahalahala end (in the video) is great in the summer. Jumping off of those rocks is a blast. That area is completely protected by the lava flows, except the one channel off to the left, which these girls obviously are staying well away from.
Thanks for the information. I saw South Pacific when I was about eight in Sydney in about 1959 I think. It left an indelible mark on my little psyche. I ended up flying planes for a living in Papua New Guinea and marrying a brown woman and we have a lovely brown son :-) I occasionally view the movie these days too. Great music as well.

Was in Kauai years ago when even bigger waves were coming in from a hurricane (Kenneth, I believe was the name). Was about to test the waves with some other guys when we saw a sign on the beach a hundred yards to our left. We walked down to see what it said. I appreciated the obvious message: "If you swim here You will die!!"
I'm actually shook that the people are literally running towards the waves. Like I would never find myself doing that. Now I'm even scared to use my bathtub
I almost died on a rip tide when I was 8 so I’ve learned to identify them and gosh, I was so scared when I saw it in this video. These people really don’t know how lucky they were.

Yikes. We were in Kauai about 6 weeks after this video. Almost all of the beaches in this area were closed due to surf conditions like this,: Beach Closed signs with very graphic warnings. There were many on the beaches but no one in the water. What's happening in this video looks very unwise.
As someone who's nearly drowned underestimating the sea, this is genuinely terrifying.

@@fridagylterud9491 An undertow can occur along the entire beach face during times of large breaking waves, whereas rip currents are periodical at distinct locations. Riptides occur at inlets. Essentially they are created by the geology under the water and by tides.

I just returned from Kauai, and the vast majority of its north shore waters are unsafe for swimming. They are truly some of the most sublime beaches in the world, but tame they are not.
If those were my children I'd be getting them out of there. That's dangerous !!

Nick Trembly oh please. Living on Kauai, I go to this beach all the time. It’s also called nurses beach (because they filmed a movie there) and tourist lumahi because of all the gosh damn tourists there. A major sand slope that’s really good to stand up on a boogie board and try to skimboard on and that rock that you can climb on. I’ve been there in the winter when the waves are on the north shore and it’s really big and dangerous. So stop being so naive and judging these people.

Lumaha'i is one of the most dangerous beaches on Kauai as it has particularly strong currents. Those waves were incredibly powerful and could knock someone off their feet and into open sea in an instant.

I’m born and raised on Kauai, yes those waves are big and yes it’s usually like that in some way. I’m from West side and thats Northshore side. The only problem I have with the waves over there are that you can’t surf them without smacking a rock
Never underestimate the power of the ocean
I was there on vacation. A similar thing happened to myself and parents. We were behind a rock well into shore and there were massive waves. One of them was so bug it crashed onto the rock and nearly caught us. The rock was easily over our heads too.

If anyone is wondering the last wave crash was due to a rogue wave, so that combined with the normal waves made the splash that big. That’s why you saw the water come up so far to the beach because usually it doesn’t. The camera man wouldn’t have seen another wave crash like that one.
That's totally false. This happens all the time there when the surf is giant. Kauai gets some of the largest waves on the planet.

Actually this is Kahalahala Beach, and those rocks are a blast to jump off of in the summer in (much) calmer surf. Lumaha’i is the beach that extends down to the left.
if you've never done it, i've done it on teneriffe with way smaller waves obviously, but they would still toss you around like a feather and drag you through the sand. the pull back into the ocean is also quite substantial. that being said it was the most fun i could have at that day, and generally one of my favorite holiday memories.

My mother told me about a beach with waves as big as those she visited as a child. Another kid was dragged into the sea by one and their father went after them. He could save his child but he drowned. It really teached me to respect and be cautious of the ocean.
I’m from Sydney, NSW, Australia where so many drownings occur every year, mostly tourists and people from landlocked countries. If you don’t see flags and lifeguards don’t swim there.

Was recently in Hawaii and on Kauai and its amazing how little respect for the oceans power people have. Maybe its just that I grew up in and around the water but they have signs everywhere to warn the uninitiated about how massively dangerous this is and people do it anyway. Like when we went to Queens Bath on a day that wasn't completely calm and people walked past the sign with the 28 tic marks for the people who had died and went in anyway, even with young kids and didn't get out even after a couple of good waves like they specifically warn about came thru. I just don't get it

@Anthony Todd no, there's a difference between going for a swim in a place known to kill people for purely thrill and a confident, calculated risk in taking on a productive, if dangerous task or mission. They say discretion is the better part of Valor. I understand risks and danger, I'm a firefighter which has inherent risks but in any situation there's a judgement of risk versus reward and a mitigation of those risks. Swimming in a place that is made clear to be potentially fatal doesn't have a reward that justifies the risk, entering a burning structure is at minimum as risky but when the reward is potentially saving a life or at least valuable property the risk is justified. That's where the difference lies.
I like how the two closest to the wave employed different strategies. The guy on the left just took a long look at what was coming probably thinking "well shit, not dealing with this today" and just turns around to let himself get engulfed by the wave. Guy on the right raises his hands in triumph daring the wave to try and take him down before he can safely dive right beneath the foam.

Alana I have had several family members and friends die in waves like that. The force and speed of the water as it rushes back to the ocean is overwhelming, and the sand is being swept away from under your feet like a rug.

I was visiting a friend in Florida. We went to St. Augustine. Got in the water to our ankles so her sister could take a pic of us. It took 2 secs for the current to knock us on our asses. I slammed into the sand so hard it took a chunk of skin out of my knee. Remember that is in only 3" of water. The ocean is powerful at all levels, you need to respect it.
Kauai. One of my favorite places in the world. Love it there.

Kaui, including that beach, has some of the most dangerous beaches I have ever been to. Giant ghost waves will suddenly appear out of nowhere in the calmest of days and wash you out to sea to drown.
Another episode of humans vs mother nature, it never gets old, even when we know who the clear winner is
