I feel very lucky, very blessed to hold The Water Dancer & The 1619 Project in my hand at the same time, processing the Civil War, processing slavery, processing the the destruction of the black family with an eye on healing, with an eye on understanding.

I've just finished the novel and am still in its grasp. Slavery is a thing we learn about in school (sort of?) but the complexities of its psychological stamp on enslaved persons certainly weren't explored. It's those upon which I'm left musing. Coates gave me the gift I always most appreciate: new thoughts - thoughts I've never had before.

I purchased this novel today. Skimming through the descriptions and such, I was interested in the prevalence of the "family" throughout time. In the american slave times, I never really grasped the concept of enslaved individuals still belonging and seeking out a family. Initially learning about life in that time, it's easy to not view the enslaved as conscious/breathing individual that has same fears and desires any person may have. Instead a statistic or another unfortunate fact of history. I'm hoping this book provides some insight on the human condition, how we all share similarities. In times of struggle the "family" perseveres.
