@@jamychal2 She has cemented herself as "Jinx; the loose cannon" for too long in League, I don't know, whether that would've any impact on that, just warning you.
The fact that you can analyze this character base on her facial expressions as a real human being is just a testament of how AMAZING of a job the animators did bringing life to this fictional digital beigns.
the thing with animations is, that there is nothing arbitrary ever. Every frame is made. if someone reacts in a certain way, even if it's in the background, it always has a reason. And with modern animation like in Arcane, it really gets crazy
All the best shows use body language as a means of storytelling, just as much as, if not even more so than the actual words being spoken. Some animated series do a decent job of it, but it's a lot of work. Then Arcane came and blew everything out of the water.
I wish they could update her a little bit tho. She is way too easygoing and funny in the game. Or maybe season 2 will explain how her personality evolves closer to her present in-game state. Maybe she will resolve some of her inner conflicts and heal a little.
@@brekumoro there are characters who, when they meet each other in-game, have voice lines. for example, if ekko meets an enemy jinx he'll say "i had a crush once, until you started talking to the gun."
The most heartbreaking moments of Arcane are the ones not even spoken of. The ones you have to self realize to understand their impact. 1. Sky is the little girl that watches over Viktor as a child playing with the boat he made in episode 6. She's had an unrequited crush on him pretty much her entire life. Marvelling at his ingenuity. Then she died to save him from the hex core that he created. 2. Vi gave Powder a blue flare saying "Where ever you are. Light this up and I'l find you" Powder has blue clouds tattooed all over her arms and body. She's always been calling out to Vi to come save her.
It's interesting because it's disturbing to watch, even after I've rewatched the show a couple times and watched a Dozen react channels, It still unnerves me every time I see Power having the panic attack or begging for Vi to come back. It's because it's so realistic, It's hard to watch but I can't stop re- watching it.
The drooling was a bit much but yes, as someone with a similar problem with from a young age feeling like i could never be good enough ive had such a panic attack in response to feeling useless or a failure.
I remember watching reactions where everyone was shocked and horrified by it, thinking it was possibly the beginning of her start to madness, and realizing that normal people have never had crying fits like that. Meanwhile my first reaction was: oh that’s relatable
I’d love to see your take on VI’s arc… she’s just as traumatized as Jinx is… her way of expressing it is through fights and acting impulsively with poor decision making.
She's gone through a _lot_ of shit between being old enough to remember her parent's deaths, being the leader/substitute mother kind of?? to the other orphans, her new family dying in front of her AGAIN, losing her sister and the guilt that came with it, and then it's implied that she was being beaten in prison for years. An analysis of her psyche would be great.
@@errortryagainlater4240 it’s heartbreaking how resilient she is, because despite everything she has mantained a good and kind nature… and you can only wait anxiously to see that kindness be tested and used to hurt her.
@@kirani111 That's one of the key reasons why Caitlyn is so important for Vi's development. Finally having someone she can trust and who cares for her, something she didn't have for years. I'm so thrilled to see where they are going with it. Especially after Jinx cutting so deep into Caitlyns life in the final Ep.
Yes! Vi suffers the most in my opinion. She has all of Jinx's suffering - AND she now holds herself as responsible for Jinx's suffering. And then on top of it, she is forced to choose not just unfairly between a lover and her family, but also between her ideals (Zaun) and her emergent life (Piltover). This show has a lot of strangely overpowered characters; echo, Jayce, jinx being geniuses (seriously, what the odds of not one Einstein level genius being present at a moment in time, but three - Jayce, Jinx, Viktor). But easily the most powerful of all, the most Mary Sue, is Vi, who basically punches her way out of shattering trauma with an exhausted smile.
Vi is constantly getting the shit kicked out of her the whole show. You can see in her facial expressions how ashamed she is when she slaps Powder in the third episode. She realizes she’s so used to violence that she impulsively uses it against her own family.
Worst thing about this, is that even though Powder clung to Silco after ep3, ep6 showed that after all this time, all she really wanted was her sister to find her again.
Of course, and that also is another great thing about this series. Perhaps some would expect that she would eternally stay mad at Vi here but it's not that easily broken, she was very open to it and that's another thing I loved about this series, since that felt so much more real. Unfortunately, Vi really dropped the ball in ep7 and ep9. Especially ep9 where Vi just triggered all of Jinx's PTSD which is something I really can't forgive her for. Wish Jinx hadn't stopped Silco but unfortunately we need Vi the champion(saved by canon).
How did Vi drop the ball in episode 7? She can’t care about anyone else now? Jinx shot at her and was beyond a conversation. Also Vi offered in the ninth episode to just leave with them together (Vi and Jinx) and even Silco was like “yeah do that!”. She played on her trauma once Caitlyn was in danger. Silco had it easy compared to Vi he just had to care for her and she would listen to anything he spouted for years.
@@ijuka Gotta be one of the worst takes I’ve ever seen. Jinx killed 3 of their family members and Vi forgave her but Vi triggers a lil PTSD and suddenly she deserves to die for it?! Where’s the logic in that?! 🤦♀️ What was Vi supposed to do?! Let herself die?! And who would rather have Silco live instead of Vi?! He was worse to Jinx than anyone was. He brainwashed her and manipulated her and molded her into who he wanted her to be. But yeah he DEFINITELY deserved to live over Vi. Like wtf?! I’m trying to understand ur point of view but I just can’t I’m sorry
@@andylozano5193 Vi dropped the ball in ep7 by not just having Ekko carry Caitlyn while Vi goes to talk with Jinx. I'm sure Jinx would have been receptive. Instead she has Ekko almost kill Jinx and Jinx attempt suicide as a result. And no Caitlyn shouldn't be more important than Jinx, she had known Caitlyn for like 1 day. She's a crush at best.
I find it interesting how much of a influence Mylo had on Jinx's psyche...She has a stuffed versions of both Mylo and Claggor and even though Claggor was clearly the larger of the two, Mylo's doll is bigger.
If I remember correctly, it was Mylo who coined the term "Jinx" for Powder. It was Mylo that went the hardest against Powder coming along etc. Since he was, tragically, proven right..:'(, I can see how he would be the devil/poison in Jinx's ear. A constant reminder of her tragic mistake and fuel that she is, indeed, a jinx.
because it was mylo that called her jinx, and remember the moment vi re-affirmed that to powder "Because you're a jinx, Mylo was right" ... Mylo was right. this statement is what caused her always had this imaginary inner voice that act as mylo, her voice of doubt and negativity
It was super wrong tho how Violet just let Mylo talk his shit. He shoulda never bullied powder like that. I don’t think he was right, she just internalized his verbal violence
@@NaomiCalls first, they were kids. With no parents. I don't know if they understand the concept of bullying. They just say what they want to say. Mylo was wrong, ofc and Vi already warn him. It just that powder not heard that
The storyline of Jinx is made so good. You understand her madness. Her angst, guilt, and defensive behavior. To be a first time writer and be able to construct such a complicated, yet understandable character is amazing. The animation of her is amazing and the voice actors is Oscar worthy.
It's definitely above the quality we've gotten from the forced inclusion Hollywood has injected so much of what has come out in recent years. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against inclusion... it's like sex, nothing wrong with that in itself. Forced inclusion, however... you see where I am going with this? it's like RAPE.
@@jonathanbaker4361 how is representing people in media forced? Those people are part of society so they deserve to be included in media as well. Imagine you’re a part of society, you go to work, you pay your taxes, but you don’t see yourself represented anywhere. It’s like you’re invisible. All the songs, the movies, the tv shows are filled with people that aren’t like you. Growing up I actually never understood the point of love songs, romantic comedies etc. since they didn’t make sense to me. Why would I be sad over a girl. (All this also goes for disabled people and poc too btw) I fucking WISH I had a gay character in a TV show that I could have looked up to as a child, that would have saved me years of mental torment and denial. This is why not having exclusively white, straight, unimpaired people in media is important. (oh and also comparing „gays in media“ to literal rape is another topic all in of itself)
Jinx was pretty messed up from the get go though. This little girl was building freacking nailbombs when she was like what? 9? Like brawling and stealing is one thing but then there is Powder building murder weapons with names, painted faces and all kind of messed up stuff.
@@klnsbl Missing the point. You want to be parade'ed around as a cheap point for big corpos, millionaires and politicians? Forcing things bad. Inclusion for inclusions sake is often horribly done. Shoe horned in. Representaiton can be done better than just adding a "token gay" character just how they used to add a token black guy/girl into movies before.
The way they wrote Jinx character is so complex, beautiful and relatable. Most of the times, villains are written as someone you will really hate the entire time but jinx, I can't find any reasons to hate her. Yeah she is liable of all the crimes she committed but I can't help but still pity her because of her situation. And silco? Like he's the most evil person in the season 1 yet, but he becomes soft and loving whenever it's about jinx. He hated vander for being weak but he ended up like vander also.
I hated Jinx a lot. After I realized she had mental problems (the break down on her room), I realized she literally cannot help it. When she killed her family, I just got so cold toward her. She needed psychiatric attention but wasn’t possible. She became an annoyance to me, especially when we see how Vi turned out to be the opposite.
@@UdoADHD I get what you're saying, Jinx killed 6 people (that we know about) and she should be held responsible for it. I would like to point out that Vi was older when they lost their parents, so she had a little more maturity and mental tools to help her cope with the trauma. Pouder aka Jinx didn't have those tools, her coping method was Vi and that made Pouders issues worse when she thought Vi abandoned her.
I feel like everyone misses the one crucial reason why Powder breaks down when she cant come with to save Vander. It's not just a potential abandonment - the last of her family might actually die while she's not with them. Idk if anybody else experienced death anxiety as a kid, but I a 100% read her panic attack scene as that. As death anxiety
I have a still do into adulthood (in fact it's currently getting worse and I will most likely being seeking therapy for it when I have the money and insurance necessary). The reactions and pure panic, scared of your own mind and thoughts. For a bit all you know is fear and the panic sets in. It's so accurate, it was the first thing I thought of to. Throw in the thoughts of if anything she does is worth it given how Mylo thinks and the fact they won't bring her and that if they die, their last thoughts will (in Powder's mind) be that she was and always will be a Jinx. The second she could prove it, the fear was gone. She had purpose and they would not view her as a jinx ever again. And then it all goes wrong. Her actions just reaffirmed her worst fears and she has a much more major panic attack, one that only Vi could have fixed at that moment. She was as deep into fear as she could get, and as somebody who has felt death anxiety strong enough that I just sat crying for several hours, her jumping on Silico fits 100%. Anything and EVERYTHING that even mildly soothes your mind is taken. Your brain and emotions cannot handle that level of suffering and stress. Yes Vi walking away was understandable, but a short few words to reassure Powder she would be right back and doesn't hate her would have gone a long way. When Jinx later remarks that Vi made her, THAT exact monet, calling her a jinx and walking away was what made her Jinx. That's the anger you see in the eyes. Jinx is her answer to her fears that she will always just end up ruining everything, if that's how it ends up, might as well do it on purpose and learn to love and tale pleasure in it.
I feel bad that powder thinks it is her job to fix everything as a little kid. I get that feeling. Then everyone makes her feel like she is just unwanted. So she ends up in very toxic relationships.
It really should be noted that Vi was just a kid here as well, at most in her early teens, and she just lost her father and brothers and discovered her sister was the cause, even if it was not intended. And the fact she just moved around the corner to cool off, that she never planned on actually leaving, really showed that despite everything she still cared about her and her face showed she regretted striking Powder and her words. She looked at her hand after she struck her, saw Powder's blood on the wrapping, the same wrapping with the dried blood of the people Vi had hit. I'm sure that if Silco and Marcus hadn't shown up Vi would have eventually collected Powder and brought her back. Vi was even willing to risk her own life again for Powder when she saw Silco, knowing that she had no chance in her current condition against him.
LoL's "explore the council archives" event put's her at "roughly 17" the day she got taken in to prison. (So right after these scenes.) Just to clarify.
@@Donpa Not everything is her fault, she just doesn't dimention how her mistake played a part on how Jynx is now, she keeps trying to make her remember and go back to been Powder, when the last thing she needs is keep remembering her traumatic experiences over and over. If Vi weren't so distracted with Caitlyn and her mission she could have handle things better with Jynx, clear the misunderstandings and accept her as she is know, Jynx not Powder.
@@nightnaughty it is to be noted that Jinx wants Vi to kill Caitlyn because she is jealous of their attachment to each other. Jinx isn’t in a reasonable state and it would be incredibly difficult to calm her down and clear misunderstandings with. People need to have more connections than just one person, Vi and Jinx included. Vi took every chance she could to try to reconnect to Jinx, despite all the obstacles and how her sister has changed.
The moment Vi said “because your a Jinx!!!” That created the line, and broke powder. After those 4 words she was no longer Powder but a Jinx because her person branded her with that name
@@nivelle420 yes but it didn’t didn’t have the impact of when Vi said it. Mylo could say whatever he wanted, but it was Vi that Powder truly cared about the most. So when she called powder a jinx, it was the only one that stuck. all of the other factors in that scene also contribute to why it hurt her deeper.
@@Savorthefuckinflavor Indeed, Vi was the only person in the world she really looked up to, and hearing her say that she’s a “jinx” really broke her. Anyone else’s opinion didn’t really matter
What I found interesting, is that both Jinx and Ekko would've done well at the academy. Had their talents been properly encouraged and nurtured, their future might not have been so bleak. You Don't see much of echo, but the only two people to have been seen to encourage jinxes creativity was silco and vi.
I'll be contrarian and say that Jinx and Ekko's talents would have been stifled at the academy. These characters are the most resourceful and curious because their survival depends on that. In an Academy, learning becomes a job and the reward is grades. Further, in an Academy you're constantly surrounded by professors which stifle creativity as they try to enforce the curriculum. Jayce and Viktor made their bold inventions by going against the influence of the Academy.
In the official league lore outside Arcane, Ekko's parents helped him get to the university of piltover. He wasn't an orphan and used his time winder to spend more time with them when they get home from working in the mines.
One of the biggest tragedies of this show is that I understand the characters so well. I understand why Powder was reckless and tried to help; I understand why Vi lost her temper, slapped, and yelled at her sister. Both of them made terrible mistakes, both were thrust into situations nobody should be in, let alone children and teenagers. But the world doesn't care; the tragedy of that night tore the two sisters apart, and the ramifications were felt throughout the rest of Season 1 and beyond.
@@Shax22132 aaah , the final words of Penguin in "Batman TAS" and one of the best episodes of the series. In general Batman TAS had some of the best villains in any kind of series. Remember the first introduction of Mr.Freeze? He did not want fame, he did not want money or power for the sake to get money or power. He was betrayed by the society as well and he never shown ill will to Batman( you can see that later in the Batman series when Batman was judged against every criminal that he jailed ,Mr.Freeze is the only one missing from there and for good reason ).
As someone with BPD I relate to Jinx a lot, like her sensitivity to rejection, her obsessive tendencies, the feeling of wanting to be good enough for someone and lashing out when you feel like someone will hurt or abandon you.
As someone diagnosed with BPD and PTSD and having an uncle with paranoid schizophrenia, it was so refreshing (albeit exhausting if you’re an empath) to see these disorders portrayed so WELL in Jinx. She definitely shows signs of schizoaffective disorder as an adult and the moments of PTSD flashbacks/triggers were portrayed so well. No silly full scenery transitions or typical Hollywood theatrics.
Except that they did have a "life-saving surgery" using a magical "unhealthy" substance that supposedly wasn't great for her mental state, just like a classic Hollywood/comic trope. It completely falls within "the joker" version of further madness and was in my opinion very unnecessary. Everything now edit: seems I have to highlight: >CAN/MIGHT< (and in a possibly, not certainly way), not MUST be blamed on shimmer making her crazier. She is even portrayed as crying shimmer as well as have her eyes glow with it. It might just have been a thing to heal her after magically surviving a grenade exploding
@@vincentgraymore i dont think thats "hollywood" at all, shimmers always been a big thing in the story and plot, jinx almost died and shimmer was the only thing that could save her, it has no connection to her mental health issues, sure it may mentally affect her but its not the reasoning for everything that happened before she was injected with it
@@Crow23346 It is very Hollywood, that part. Just because shimmer is a thing established previously in Arcane does not make it less of a macguffin like how other drugs or as an example X gene is a thing in X-men. Both in how it can heal wounds, power up people and is a drug that make addicts. Like how joker is insane and becoming "worse" after falling into a vat of chemicals (as Harley does as well). It is not necessarily mind-altering, but an event traumatic through the body. Superpowered drug with multiple effects and shown to make people violent and show people more like an enraged hulk do not make it less Hollywood because it is refined it into creating hulking suits as well as powering bionics. The insane comes from within, but it is not uncommon in Hollywood to have some kind of experiment event that does the triggering or makes it worse. Regardless if it makes them a superpowered individual or just further madness. Not even Hollywood creates most of their "madness" out of thin air, but have often short and bad backgrounds as well as underlying and often previous if short explained mental states that gets worse for some reason, experiment or event. That is exactly what happens in the series, but we do get a lot more context than perhaps normal. Also, not to spoil, but there is someone important that didn't actually die and will be back as another "champion from the game" because of Singed experimentation, meaning we also have that trend going on regarding Hollywood treatment.
A little thing I love about her gadgets is that they show two worlds colliding, one of her innocence as a child that wants to play with toys and dolls and the other of a harsh world, where she needs to be able to protect herself and not being a burden to her family. Her later weapons shows that she didn't transition from this stage in a healthy way, each weapon has faces, ears and eyes, even names.
I love this and I also noticed she uses her childish nature as a sort of escapism or just to desensitize her to the reality of what she’s doing (gunning down actual people) which is why I think when she’s fighting the fireflies and she sees one of them with red hair just like VI she’s snapped out of this illusion she’s made for herself. She acts so much like a kid I predicted she’d do something like “choose me or her” eventually, because she wants attention and wants to be needed.
the way silco not only hugs her but shelters her and moves his leg around her as well will always get me. that little movement will forever be in my mind
I really hope they take their time with season 2. As much as I can’t wait for it, I want them to put their hearts and souls into it like they did this season. This show is a beautiful work of art. Powder/Jinx is one of my new all time favorite characters.
@@IkaikaArnado Pretty sure they are going to mostly stay with the characters they introduced in season 1 and expand on those characters lore like they did with season 1. Theres enough material already to fill another 9 episode season with Singed and his daughter (Ori?), Warwick/Vanders arc, Ekko and Heimer teaming up, Viktor's glorious evolution and of course they will probably have something new to add to Jinx, Vi and Caitlyns arc too. Wouldn't really make sense to switch the region completely.
Powder/Jinx clearly has Borderline Personality Disorder. And the trauma that brought it about was losing her parents and seeing their dead bodies. This instilled that heavy fear of abandonment, both real or percieved. Vi is her FP, her Favorite Person. And then we see her Split on Vi. That cycle of idealization and devaluation. You see that Powder/Jinx has no emotional skin, she feels EVERYTHING dialed up to 11. Later. as Jinx you can see her HEAVILY disassociating. Then theres the engaging in risky behavior, having unhealthy and unstable relationships, immediately latching onto the first person to show her kindness after Vi abandons her(Silco) and then later Splitting on him the moment he let's her down once. She has literally every symptom of BPD. As someone who struggles with BPD myself, I can definitely say this is the most accurate representation of it that I've seen in any media. My poor sweet baby powder, it breaks my heart to see her journey.
I think that makes so much sense. I see some people saying she has schizophrenia, but I don’t see that at all. At times she has psychotic episodes, which I have heard can also happen in BPD. BPD is the best/simplest explanation I think.
@@gigahorse1475 I can definitely see why people would think schizophrenia, but I think her psychotic episodes could be better explained by Borderline Personality Disorder that is comorbid with Major Depressive Disorder With Psychotic Features. I am not a doctor, but I have read the DSM5 cover to cover and I struggle with BPD myself and see so much of myself in Jinx. Then again, I'm fully willing to admit that I could just be projecting o.o
@@smashbrandiscootch719 No, I don’t think you’re projecting. I could definitely see her as having BPD being the writers’ intention. I feel like if she did have SZ, it’s in the “early stages” because someone who has untreated SZ wouldn’t be able to build these ingenious bombs and carry out successful plans as much as she does. Also, I wish you the best in your own recovery! :)
4:24 this scene was like a punch to the gut. I didn't see it coming and it's probably the best depiction of an anxiety attack I've ever seen in an animated show.
I will say, Jinx may have clung to random affection over none at all but Silco wasn’t really a toxic choice of affection in this case. He actually cared for her. I think it was nice that the show let us also overthink how Silco actually feels for Jinx with her up until the very end. “They could all burn!” ~ “I was never going to give you to them. You’re my daughter. ” ~ “Don’t cry. You’re perfect.”
Their relationship was incredibly toxic, even though Silco loved her. He dealt with his own trauma in unhealthy ways, saw himself in Powder, and proceeded to teach her how to deal with her trauma in unhealthy ways. He doesn’t help her grow up or move past it because he never did that himself. He also uses her for his own gain and alienates her from her family, classic abusive behavior. He did have “good” intentions though. Which is a major theme of the show, and the reason their relationship is so well-written for this story. The road to hell is paved with good intentions
@@Meraxes6 i agree but i think i really cant blame silco here i mean its the only way he knew how to deal with trauma also i feel like solco mange to grow up i mean he said himself he will never give her up finally understanding why vander become the way he is silco understand that for them to reach their goal there is a price and both silco and vander will never take
@@commentlurker3874 Exactly! I think people forget that Silco has trauma too and that he handles it the only way that he knows. His character is actually very tragic if you really think about it.
Silco pretty much "enabled" Jinx. He brought out and helped to exaggerate the worst parts of her. He didn't even approach her with the best of intentions. AIthough he did eventually end up loving and caring for her truly, like a daughter, he still wasn't the best for her. He couldn't deal with his own trauma properly or in a healthy way, and he definitely didn't help Jinx to deal with hers either.
Vi and Jinx both have the same trauma but different paths. Jinx’s trauma broke her, while VI’s trauma built her. Even literally, jinx uses her bombs and bullets to break things. While Vi is trying to fix things, the undercity, her relationship with her sister. What’s more interesting is the way they go about achieving their goals, which is the complete opposite. Jinx is building things that break stuff. Vi is using her fist to break bones in order to fix her city. These characters are masterfully done and so is the show
Well, Powder was a small child so of course it would break her and damage her worse, Vi was older and that’s why she was stronger and could handle it better
Already having to be the "strong" one set Vi down her path of dealing with trauma. Don't think about it (the trauma), keep it together because people depend on you, have all the answers... being "strong" is how you deal with everything even if it means bulldozing though every problem.
What messed me up was that Vi never actually abandoned Power. She just needed to take a breath and went around a corner but kept Powder in line of sight. But even knowing this she still blames herself and makes herself believe that she really did abandon the most precious thing in the world to her.
I'm so glad you dipped into Vi's actions toward Powder too. So many people view her so harshly and I have to keep repeating myself that Vi is also still a kid at this point and they don't have the emotional capacity to process the sheer intensity of what happens in these scenes. Being able to realize she needed to walk away for a moment to process the trauma and grief was incredibly mature. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Us with BPD took a hard hit with Arcane. We had a person who was completely and utterly relatable in the forefront. A villian at that but one that was finally understandable.
The scene when powder scream and cry after being abandoned, hurt me so much, it honestly made me break down crying as i felt like i saw my self as a kid in my room. It was a heavy scene, but the whole story of Powder/Jinx is heavy, and so well written!
I actually don’t think Powder really knew who Silco was when he first spoke to her. When Mylo and Clagger ask who took Vander, Vi doesn’t know either, and neither did Ekko. None of the kids were familiar with him, they just knew where they went because Ekko, true to form, followed them. I don’t think Powder’s brief glimpse into the chaos of the fighting gave her a sight of Silco either. She was focused on Vi and those threatening her directly. So from her perspective it’s just a stranger, a man with what we perceive as a threatening voice asking where her sister is, but that Powder may have interpreted as genuine concern from an adult. She is not choosing an enemy over no one, she is choosing a “kind and concerned” stranger over being alone. She is already familiar with adopted father figures in Vander and even Benzo as an uncle. Obviously she figured out who he was later, but by then not only had he accepted her but she likely felt she deserved to be with “the bad guys” because she caused the death of most of her family and was tormented by guilt.
Since you mentioned guilt, a comment I saw on Reddit pointed out that during the warehouse explosion when Powder is knocked back, she has an expression of awe, possibly for a couple reasons: she's finally useful, she admires the beauty of her traps and explosions. Then she begins feeling intense guilt because she felt admiration at the action which killed her foster family. The guilt would add to your idea that she now sees herself as evil. The reason I mention the guilt would stem from her feeling of admiration specifically and not necessarily from killing her foster family is that it adds onto this next point which is arguably far fetched. Another comment pointed out that in the final scene of the season Jinx calls herself "different" with what you could argue is a shameful/guilty intonation and camera angle. Perhaps the traps and explosions which contributed to her "differences" are now associated with feelings of guilt and self-loathing due to the tragedy she caused in ep 3. It's more likely other reasons I've read though.
I mean wouldn't describe Silco as an angel but based on the body language and some interactions they've had you can tell that Silco understood Jinx in some way, they had a high level of trust, and how he somewhat resembled a parental figure for her
@@twentyonetortas5921 I think Georgia Dow put it best in that Silco didn't need to offer Vi's sister anything other than to make her feel less alone. I agree that Silco understood Vi's sister better but throughout the show Vi's sister primarily wants her sister back, it's part of why she's so confused and emotional.
@@twentyonetortas5921 This is not directly related to Jinx, but throughout most of Arcane, I generally felt like Silco was just a hypocrite who used his "vision of Zaun independence" as an excuse to justify his power hunger and urge for revenge against Topside. And then I had to do a complete 180 when he accepted the parlay with Jayce and made very reasonable demands. It completely changed his characterization in my mind from a typical bad guy to more of a Doctor Doom-type genuine well intentioned extremist. I even felt a bit guilty for misjudging him early on :)).
Thank you for explaining Vi outburst, a lot of people didn't like how she reacted but i think it's perfectly in line with her personality, as you said she grow up in a violent environment so she acted out of her instinct
@@Densema and she'd also just seen her family die in front of her _for the second time._ She was old enough to clearly remember her bio parents being killed by enforcers. No wonder she reacted like that.
Powder actually doesnt really know that Silco IS the bad guy at that moment, as she wasnt present at the Attack at Benzos or at Silcos Talk right before Vi's fighting scene in the Warehouse. So its not even a tradeoff for "affection even if its from the bad guy" because for her he has less the image of the Bad Guy than the one of a random Guy.

The fact that you recognized Vi's parenting techniques on Powder is pretty amazing and its also heartbreaking because Vi isn't very much older than Powder, but she's already mature enough to understand and identify problematic behaviours in herself.
9:05 As someone who struggled with anger issues myself I can vouch for leaving to cool off when your brain is in fight or flight mode being crucial to avoid doing something you'll regret. Unfortunately in this case, leaving her alone turned out to *be* what she would regret the most.
I really hope you do another vid breaking down her character as an adult, and also of Silco's attachment to her. He's the the badguy in the show but I don't think he's evil and he definitely does love and care about her probably more than he does anyone else and I think he saw and empathised with how Vi leaving her hurt so much, because of how Vander was once a brother to him but then turned against him and actually tried to kill him. Even when her erratic chaotic behavior starts causing problems for his business and wears away the loyalty of his followers, he never even considers turning against her or cutting her loose.
He loves and care for her, as well as being attached to her. However, he was a terrible parent. She was spoiled for a lack of a better adjective, telling your daughter that she’s perfect and nothing is wrong with her after she kills you is an affirmation to everything that’s negative about her. Everything that she should seek help with.
@@Velocitist That wasn't an issue. The issue was that he tried to raise her into being his little soldier by her own "choice". It's fortunate that he grew attached to her and that she was growing up like this anyways, because otherwise, it would have been truly sad.
Absolutly. I would love to hear her thoughts on Adult jinx. Definatly some PTSD, and possible a dissosciative episode disorder or a psychotic episode disoder.
@@wl4810 Interesting, wrong angle from my end. Schizoaffective disorder looks likely, but also the fact that everything has so much well constructed layers is already amazing in my opinion. Our low expectations contributed to it blowing our proverbial pants off.
Jezz, the “bad guy” didn’t seem all that bad when he was around Jinx/Powder especially at the end. The series really made them feel like they needed each other even if it wasn’t the healthiest relationship.
I hate this hot take. I mean, Silco took a traumatized child and taught her to channel her trauma into violence…if he’d actually been a decent parental figure he would’ve helped her deal with her pain, not taught her that the best way to cope was to kill people and blow things up.
@@eileensnow6153 Yes, I understand that, but he doesn't know the best or correct way to parent. In his mind, he was helping her heal like how he healed himself after the incident with Vander. He tried his best, wa he perfect, no, but he did parent in his own way. Not to mention he grew up in a toxic place, betrayed by the one person he trusted and loved, and abandoned. He doesn't know any healthy ways to heal/parent. Silco also wanted his empire. He wanted his city to be something than nothing. He had power problems, which clashed with his relationship with Jinx. I am not excusing his actions, but I am trying to give you a bit of perspective that you are not grasping. You cant even compare a different father and him, since they have different life experiences and handle things differently. He has major trauma that has been unresolved, which means he tends to project it to Jinx since he saw that she was "abandoned" by Vi. Both Silco and Jinx have such a tragic story.
7:26 this one made me shiver. There's a voice line in LoL of Jinx where she's saying "I have the best of intentions..." Concidering how much the voice lines in LoL are fitting to the plot of Arcane, I am starting to think this origin story was thought out years before Arcane was even planned.
10:29 I don't think Powder knew Silco was the "bad guy". He likely was never in her field of view through the narrow window to the wharehouse, and she had no knowledge of him prior to that. So from her PoV at this moment, he was just a kind stranger. This makes it more understandable when she clings to him.
Powder was knocked away from the window by her explosion and never saw Silco stab the transformed Vander. She didn't even realize Vander & her foster brothers were dead until after Vi confronted her. She thought she had helped save them. She may have learned additional details of what happened later, but right now we are talking about the end of episode 3 with little Powder having no idea who Silco was.
I love how u also explained what vi was going through to get to the point of hitting Jinx when we know she loves her so much and would never normally do that and that she just needed a moment to regroup and control her emotions so she wouldn’t do anything further to hurt Powder
The writing is simply incredible. During the second Act, when Jinx finds out Vi is alive and believes that Silco betrayed her the very first thing she does is go looking for that old connection. The takes the signal flare she was given 10 years ago (roughly the amount of time passed in the time skip) and lights it for the first time in the one in a million chance her sister will find her like she promised. Arcane is heartbreakingly real.
I would love to see VI, who was made a parent and experienced the same trauamatic event if not worse + being in prison. Alot of people seem to ignore that VI is also not ok
Yes! Like at least Jinx had someone even if that person was manipulative, it was someone that was there for her. Vi had literally no one for so many years while she was daily abused by the guards and no one to turn to.
VI definitely had it very rough as well but she never lived something as traumatic as being responsible for 2 of your friends deaths . (Even if it was by accident) i dont think there is many things as traumatic as that.
@@poilu146 Vi lived with the same guilt as Jinx if not worse. Vi was told her entire upbringing that the responsibility for Mylo, Claggor and Powder was in her hands. And she lost all of them. She carried that weight isolated in prison for years, no one to talk to and she beat herself up over it everyday. Just because Jinx’s traumas are a lot more visible due to her possible diagnosis doesn’t mean Vi’s traumas mean less than her.
@@blakesraeken4410 I feel like comparing their situations so we can say 'who had it worse' is the wrong way go about it. You can acknowledge that both Vi and Powder experienced trauma due to their environment and circumstances without pitting them against one another. As for the explosion, their guilt is more of two sides of the same coin situation imo. Comparable but coming from different sources. Vi's guilt is about responsibility to her family and wanting to protect them but losing them. Jinx's guilt is about failing to overcome her own insecurities and killing her family as a result, they died by her direct actions. And how they process it (or don't) and are changed by it differs too.
I really appreciate how the sound team portrayed the scene of Powder's panic attack. It represents very well how loud your head gets, how overwhelming everything seems and then... silence, once you can grasp and control a single train of thought.
When the audience first sees Vi and Powder, it was the scene on the bridge. Powder was holding Vi’s hand as she sang a song/nursery rhyme. She had her hands covering her eyes. When she removes her hands from her eyes, the first thing she does is look up to her sister. The camera switched to a point-of-view shot for that scene. The first thing the audience sees is the bond between the two sisters and the dependency Powder has on Vi, and this theme runs throughout the entire show.
I was really impressed overall with how this show managed to portray the mental issues and motivations for the characters in ways that overall made sense to me. And I love that you noted that the first thing Powder said after being hit wasn’t about being hit or shock or anything like that. It was about being abandoned.
I didn’t notice the first time I watched Arcane, and was initially somewhat surprised due to my lack of the aforementioned with how Silco actually took to Jinx as a daughter (or any real closeness), but the look on Silco’s face around 9:50 or so when Powder/Jinx’s confesses her “abandonment” to him and he just looks like he’s reliving through his own trauma, it’s really the first time we get to see his empathy and any sort of tenderness from him. That him hugging her was actually a real move of true empathy, comfort, and reassurance that he maybe wish he could of had, rather than full blown manipulation on his part. He truly loved and cared for Jinx in his own messed up way (not saying this at all makes him a good parent or that anything he did is made ok, just that he really did care and empathised with her, thus leading him to project his own trauma, feeding both of their abandonment issues).
The animation is masterful. When Powder is saying she only wanted to help, I love the touch that she avoids eye contact with Vi. She feels shame and shock and doesn't want her big sister's disapproval, like you said.
I thought powder had borderline personality disorder (BPD), and then when we see her as jinx she has what seems to be paranoid schizophrenia in addition to BPD. Another thing I noticed during the scene where Vi was packing her bag to go fight, powder was in the background hyper aware of every movement/body language that Vi does and was able to predict her next move. With trauma victims who’ve had to learn to adapt by attaching themselves to the person they depend on for survival (BPD, Stockholm syndrome, growing up with an abusive parent), they’re highly perceptive of “their person’s” moods and very in-tune with that person’s body language bc they’ve essentially merged into that person, they often have no sense of self unless they are attached to someone.
just a small addendum: Powder didn't see silco on the attack and was to far away to really hear him. So I think it is implied that she doesn't know he was the bad guy. The series was very careful to never show or tell her about silco before.
True! They did a very good job. It made me cry when she just hugged him. A total stranger she didn’t even know. She just wanted comfort and a feeling of being good enough and being safe. So she went to Silco for comfort.
Powder's desire to belong -- her need for connection and purpose -- was communicated so well in the first three episodes. I can't overstate how much it struck a chord with me. Even though the episode 3 finale was so very powerful, I think some of my favorite scenes came later when we see the emotional dynamics between her and Silco. There's a lot of places where the nuance of their expressions and body language tell a lot about their unconventional relationship. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the other 6 episodes!
People said Jinx is Harley Quinn of league, but in here the show managed to show her depth with just litlte original material to work on thats an impresive work
I’m surprised no motion capture was used at all for the animation, only Keyframes. The characters look so alive and full of personality. The artist and animation team did an amazing job
Riot really nailed it with the traumatic experience Powder had gone through as a child due to how accurate the situation is to some people in real life.
Anothering interesting fact is that her demons show more Mylo than both him and Clogger. He’s seen in that sneak peek, the playground music videos and even as a dummy. His drawing looks more terrifying like an actual demon when he’s really a kid killed by his friend accidentally. Back at episode 1, Mylo is talking to Vi about Powder, how she pulls everyone back and lost everything because of she’s a young child. Vi defends her for that, calling out Mylo’s flaws, but it shifted to the end of ep 3 where she hurt her sister and says that Mylo is actually right. Powder, when hearing that, then sees Mylo as a demon because she has a fear that he’s right, that she is a problem to everyone. She’s a jinx.
Seeing Powder loose control when being abandoned broke me. The emotions is how we all can relate to. The first time I watched that scene, It did make me tear up. Cause seeing her, I wanted to hug her and comfort her. Overall I loved this series. Looking forward to Season 2. I can admit Jinx is my favorite. She has so many layers to her character.
Great analysis. I think one thing nobody is talking about is the power behind vi telling powder she isnt ready. Those exact words trigger powder into her first glimpse of distrust because just a day or so earlier on the roof vi said she was ready. And to immediately have that confidence stripped from you when it matters made her really distrustful of peoples words which ties into her constant theme of calling people liars and not believing anything vi says.
@@yveltalsea I wonder about Vi's sister choosing the name "Jinx". Is she picking an insulting name for herself because of shame and self-loathing, or is she accepting that's what she is? I think it's a bit of both. If it's an insulting name, calling her "Jinx", even if that's the name she chose, would be reaffirming her trauma. But rejecting to call Vi's sister by her new name may be seen by her as rejecting who she is by that person. So, what do you do? Edit: I completely forgot what Geogia Dow mentions in the video. She could have chosen the name out of spite to prove to the world what she can do - "we'll show them".
I will never get over how well they portrayed Jinx's trauma and mental and emotional instability. In the game we just knew she was unhinged, but they show her descent SO WELL, and her struggles and triggers that set her off. We see her constantly fighting the voices in her head and trying to reach out for her sister to be Powder again...until eventually she makes the CHOICE to be Jinx. The raw emotions are just so well done. I'm so happy they did such an amazing job with one of my all time favorite League champs!
Great work! I always get confused by people who wonder why VI hit her or walked away, It is the most human thing to 1 react and instantly regret something you say or do, and 2 have to walk away to calm down... Everything in these first 3 episodes was insanely believable.
I had the same idea as Powder when I watched it - that even if briefly, Vi abandoned and therefore betrayed her little sister. It was a gut punch watching this video and realising what Vi was actually doing.
I watched this to learn more about jinx. Did not expect for me to learn more about me. Thank you for this. Subbed, will be looking forward to your future videos.
Every time I watch the Powder scenes there's a 100% chance of rain from the eyes. This time was no different. Vi didn't even leave her with an adult when she goes off to save Vander and maybe never come back. I remember the terror of losing my parents in the Supermarket as a kid. I can only imagine the panic attack I would have had in Powder's situation.
@@meowt8464 also i believe that "not bringing powder" had been an option often enough in their lives, since mylo brings it up pretty easily. so being alone wouldnt be such a big deal for the small one. by the time we watch its different though, since they obviously made pretty big progress with that first job and things really get intense. not being part of the action in that scenario is hard
@@Cheapphilosophysale That doesn't excuse her beating her own sister. There are a lot of teenagers that can show enough compassion to control themselves. Yes Vi was angry over how Powder's attempt to save them ended in a complete failure, but that was not the girls fault and even Vi knew it deep down.
@@basilofgoodwishes4138 it was in the heat of the moment, her entire family just died. Vi regretted smacking her moments afterwards. Nobody was justifying it, it was just a realistic reaction.
This is such a well written, well acted series! That animation goes a long way of showing the temperament of these two characters from the first scene of them together without saying a word about them.
this is genuinely such a unique character. i don’t think i have seen a show that portrays a character like her. i have studied psychology and body language analytics for about 2 years now, i know it’s not the longest time but when you can analyze these things just kind of subconsciously while watching a show it gives a very different perspective on characters within a show. this show in particular is just so excellently wrote.
Arcane truly is a masterclass in dramatic/poetic storytelling. I would love to see your reaction to act 2 (episodes 4-6) and act 3 (episodes 7-9) of this series, especialy the last 5 minutes of this season. SPOILERTALK below: . . . I think there are two options to interpret Powders/Jinxs behaviour in the last minutes of the season. 1) she realy blames her sister for what she has become, and that she got "replaced" by Caitlyn, which would go along with Stings fantastic "What could have been"/the song in the background OR: 2) After Silcos death, Powder made the choice to embrace Jinx to push her sister away, to protect Vi from the monster she thinks she has become/the "Jinx" she has always been. Killing yet another father figure/Silco has cemented that notion even deeper in her mind, even if she was acting on impulse to save her sister. In this case, that "I thought that maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though i am ... different." wasnt so much a "Why?!" directed towards Vi (which just told her that it will be OK), but an admission to herself. Like: "I see it now - i see that you cant/shouldnt love me." Thats also why she didnt kill Caitlyn - because she recognized how much she ment to Vi and that Cait, not her, should be with her sister. If you take a look at "Jinx" when shes walking up the ramp with the RPG, facing the council-tower (head down, arms/shoulders hanging): she isnt driven by anger or hate. She seems sad but she knows what she HAS (not wants) to do. Still, after she gets up there, she is struggling hard to fire that RPG. Because she knows that that will be the point of no return, finaly parting from her sister ... but with it, saving her from Jinx. Cinematography sidenote: its not her pulling the trigger that gets the RPG going, but her screaming in emotional agony, which is morphing into the roar(same pitch as her scream) of the rocket shooting out of the launcher. Having a younger sibling, i got to admit that this final minutes broke me, especialy in combination with the song...
SPOILER below: i completely agree with that, she was just sad.. take a look at how before shooting that rocket she passes by her sister, stops there and directly looks in her eyes.. i think she was hoping for some words there but nothing .. ill wait for Georgia words ... i hope she analyzes every scene with vi and jinx (and silco and caitlyn)
Tell me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the rocket will completely, completely tear them apart. It’d probably take time after time after time of terrible things to get it through VI’s head that it’s COMPLETELY hopeless. Jinx may have made herself an enemy of all of Piltover but Vi might still think in the back of her head that there’s something she can do. Especially if she ever realizes what is hurting Jinx the most, she’d do anything to put her mind at peace. They are family, after all. It takes a lot to 100% decide someone like that is an enemy.
i think its both of the points... it is shown multiple times that she cant accept the caitlyn figure... as she respresents the thing that they hated the most when they were young.. a piltovian enforcer
@@tobenamed610 difficult to say, as far as lor lore goes, jinx is an antagonist but she doesn't die. The second season might dive deeper into piltover lore and probably introduce noxus and swain
I still can't watch the scene where Powder cries that "she was only trying to help" to Vi after the explosion without choking up and crying a little, and I've seen it at least half a dozen times. I feel so much for that poor child. If you haven't done one already, I'd like to see a professional breakdown of Silcro's evolved relationship and feelings toward Jinx, juxtaposed against how we see his personality manifested in his actions and interactions with the rest of the cast.
I realized this by a comment in another video. When Vi stands up to go to cool-down, Powder actually covers her face thinking she's gonna hit her again (damn sad), but then when she sees that Vi is actually leaving, she goes back to desperate mode, no relief from not-being-hit. The body language of the characters is insane well done.
I'm diagnosed with BPD, PTSD, and previously DMDD. I can really see myself in some parts of Jinx, that heavy fear of abandonment, anxious attachments, clinging onto a person, extremely impulsive decisions. I've never clicked with a character like this since Catra from my time watching She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. The story of Jinx is amazing and I can't wait to see what happens in season 2.
My favorite scenes from arcane are definitely Jinx's and her inner monologues. You can see her fragility as a child and when you are re-introduced to her as an adult she has completely cracked. Her grasp on reality is so tenuous, it's very powerful to watch a character written so well
This is why I got really upset when seeing some reactioners being pissed off and cursing Powder for not staying home as she was told, and keep blaming her for her mistake. I was like Jesus Christ it must be suck to be a friend of theirs, or even worst, their kids. Cuz they showed zero empathy and compassionate to an orphan girl who is the youngest in the group. They all probably had a wonderful childhood I guess.
Ok, I admit, I didn't like Powder and was getting irate with what she did in the first and third episodes. (Loved Jinx, hated Powder) But after watching this video, I feel for Powder more.
@@GeorgiaDow No they did not need to steal to survive Vander had a pub. They could work like Echo did. But in sick systems like slums it is gangsters and rebels that get most recognition as they are the most influencial people
I don't like people who kill others and that will never change. As much as they explained, I totally disagree with the way Powder's outbreak was handled before she went to "help" Vi. For me it was an extremely forced script. They could have taken a few more minutes to strengthen the outbreak. I think it's a shame that she will never pay for the crimes she committed, especially after growing up, after all she is a main character in LoL. I wish her the worst, after all she killed innocent people.
as someone whos been in therapy before its so nice to see an empathetic girl like you being nice to people when my only therapists have been incredibly degrading and always called me delusional
The sad part about it when I was younger I use to be EXACTLY- I mean EXACTLY like powder/jinx. I have a sister I look up to 24/7 because she was the only person in my life as a kid that actually PAYED ATTENTION TO ME unlike the rest of my family. But then one day she wanted to move in with our mom (our mom living alone, we have no dad, and are living with our 2 grandmas) and that meant...that she had to leave me, alone, in a place where people ignore me. I cried, feels like almost exactly like powder/jinx in that video EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, I would rip up drawings and cry and cry almost screaming like. And all my grandmas would do is come in the room and say "SHUT UP, SHES GONE NOW" I cried until I just couldnt cry anymore, to the point i when I cried it just to pure sadness from the inside with no tears coming out, OR turn into pure anger
But now i also moved in with my mom but we have a stupid step dad i hate WITH A BURNING PASSION but i just ignore him, and I live with my sister again...after literally 6 years
Episode three was absolutely heartbreaking for me. I couldn't stop but bring myself to tears. Powder's cry resulted me piercing and so relatable. The innocence in her eyes, the fall, the pain. Thank you so much for analyzing!
I was waiting for someone breaking down the psychological issues of the main characters (which are insanely godlike depicted) leading into certain relationships and actions. I hope you also cover adult Jinx, Silco and Vi (young and adult). Also please talk about the final and what kind of solution would have been the best - many people were lashing at Caitlyn for breaking free and pointing a gun at Jinx. But how would you react in such a situation? Honestly, I couldn't imagine to react any different being in the same life threatening situation with someone obviously gone crazy and having a gun + having issues of extreme jealousy pointed at you. Jinx could have easily shot Caitlyn (also tried to shoot her in ep7 on the bridge)-also Vi triggering (I think unconciously because the doesn't understand the extent of her sisters mental issues) her severe PTSD - do you think it helped in that situation or made it worse? Storywise the outcome was "ok" or better said reasonable considering the understanding of the characters about each other and only Sico was shot but what would you think would have been better here? I also think a main problem in the frst season is, that Vi lives in the past regarding her sister and wants her child sister back which obviously can not happen (maybe she is so drawn to that image because she took on the role of a mother to Powder early on and as we know for a mother her child is always her child and it is very difficult to let go of that image even for a normal mother-child relationship). I think she lacks the understanding that this is not possible and she needs to accept Jinx as a part of her sister (also mass murderer...). They both experienced a lot in their time apart (see episode 6 when Vi said at the reunion that she also had to do things to survive ... we can only imangine what she went through in prison because nothing is told about that excerpt the regular beating indicated by the prison guard) and Jinx on the other hand stresses the fact that both changed which is really true. Also a lot of perople hate Vi for lashing out on Powder in that situation in episode 3. I am glad you gave a few words on Vi in this video even it is for Powder/Jinx but I think people don't understand that Vi also has her demons/trauma and was also a child at that time- I think such situations are still hard for adults to handle -nevertheless a teenager(from the archives in the game we could read that she must be around 17 years old at that time) who was 2 episodes before told by here guardian that she is responsible not only for there sisters actions but also for the safety of the group ("Whatever happens this is on YOU". She tried to do the best she could - leaving Powder out of the fight but she didn't listen and blew everyone up just when they were about to be ready to escape. This tragedy and the guilt and the heavy responsibility that Vi was feeling in that moment that was taught by Vander(which was the right parental thing to do because the relationship of Vi and Vander was healthy- instead of Jinx and Silco) let to her loosing control there - and yes you can not take back what she did/said, but she had to be like 8 years in prison for that - enduring hell there - that doesn't erase the pain of Powder, but at some point there needs to come in some acceptance and forgiveness on both sides in order to eventually patch up the relationship again. I don't say it was good what Vi did but I think the reaction was understandable, for some people even relatable. On an outlook, do you think the sisters can come to terms with each other and patch it up ?
Perfectly explained! I would like to see you doing this for the other two arcs. And also i would like to see your perspective on Vi traumas, because many forget that Vi here it's only 16-17 years old, and the first enormous trauma she had to face when their parents were killed.
Correction Vi is 14-15 around this time of Arcane, Powder is around 7-8 years old in this scene, we know it since Vi told it to Caitlyn that Powder was 7years old during the parkour scene in act 2. The age distribution in the game League of Legends is kinda inconsistent, because the lore of many characters and the world of Runeterras has been updated many times now. Jinx has been said to be 21 and Vi 23 in old lore. That's 2 years apart and also their siblings relation wasn't confirmed at that time. But now it's been updated but no official years as of now is confirmed for them in current time lore. It just says that Vi is in her 20s right now. But I can try to estimate because officially Jayce is 35 years old in present League of legends. He was 24 years old around this time in Arcane that's 11 years between. We know by the lore that Caitlyn is about 1 or 2 years older than Vi and she is 27 in current League that's means Vi is around 25-26. Remove 11 years from 25-26 and Vi is around 14-15 in a the time of this video. Since Pow-pow is 7years old here from what Vi said to Caitlyn. It means Jinx is 7-8 years apart from Violet. That means Jinx is around 17-18 years old in the game. So Jinx should be 16-17 around the time from act 2 and 3. So The present time of League of legends is taking place around 2 years after the events of Arcane act 3 of season 1.
Fun sad fact. There was an animated music video made years ago, back when Jinx first debuted. It's a lot of madness and chaos and speed, a really great song, but one detail I find infinitely interesting is that song gives her minigun a name. You know what it is? Pow Pow. It's her venting and spreading her childhood pain, literally weaponizing it onto others. It's her defense and her enacting power onto others.
I’m diagnosed with BPD and honestly I really connect with Jinx so much. The desperation of not wanting to be abandoned resulting sometimes in disastrous affects for myself or others. I’ve been preyed upon by bad toxic people who knew how to Lovebomb me just enough that I’d stay with them, it can be a hard cycle to break out of. I was pleasantly surprised by Silco seeming to develop a true bond with Jinx, though I feel he fell victim to heavily projecting his issues and own trauma onto her..which a lot of parents unfortunately can do.
Maybe because in Star Wars diversity was really forced. Three out of movie series were emotional then it was just politics, adventure and romance. Vader did not seem real for he had no reason to trust his master.
This show is just an absolute masterpiece! incredible animations and truly amazing story telling and perfect use of music sets the tone for every scene so well. and the characters are so well written and well executed that i forgot I was watching an animation and not live action video, I've never seen anything like Arcane before, i really loved it!
The scene when Powder is abandoned by Vi is jaw-droppingly good! I didn't even realise that I had tears in my eyes till it was over. What fabulous, visceral voice acting
This was a great analysis of Powder and of the anxious attachment style as a whole, but I just needed to say, I love that you did your hair like Jinx. Such a creative touch and it looks good on you!
I really wish you lived closer because you sound like you'd be a perfect therapist for my wife who suffers a lot of social anxieties and mental traumas. We have help for her but you sound like you can connect really well with your patients and that's what she desperately needs
Legit cried so much during this I totally understand how this feels because Powders truma is so relatable it's sent shivers down my spine. This show has helped me so much in processing and understanding it. I totally get it now and this video has helped me so much.
Not gunna lie you had me in tears. Some of what powder feels is something I felt long ago(And still struggle with too) I resonate with powder and you did so well talking about her.
It's been a minute since a series,an animated one at that makes you feel all kinds of emotions! This is a classic in the making, and we are all blessed to be here witnessing it all!! Love you're full breakdown of powder" jinx" character!!! Sending you lots of love from Puerto Rico 💙🤗😎✌🏼❤️❤️
I was literally watching this with tears! I remember the first panic attack i had. Middle of the damn night, woke up sweating bullets, panting and walking around the kitchen, thought i was dying at that moment. Scariest feeling ever! I would never wish something like that on anyone.
This was great! The complexity and tragedy of Powder felt so good to me when I watched, and I’m so glad that you agreed too. The clothed monkey experiment “comparison” (sorry can’t think of the actual word at the moment lol) was amazing and really fits with Powder in multiple ways. My favorite scenes are probably the last scene of the 3rd episode and the last scene of the 9th episode. Last scene of the 6th episode was good too.

The fact that you can analyze this character base on her facial expressions as a real human being is just a testament of how AMAZING of a job the animators did bringing life to this fictional digital beigns.
It's astonishing
The animators need a pay rise this is a masterpiece
the thing with animations is, that there is nothing arbitrary ever.
@@rudy_4ier Just the shift in EYES communicated sooo much. Man.

Arcane literally explains everything.
I wish they could update her a little bit tho. She is way too easygoing and funny in the game. Or maybe season 2 will explain how her personality evolves closer to her present in-game state. Maybe she will resolve some of her inner conflicts and heal a little.
@@МарияСизова-г9м We see some hints of that personality in Arcane. I think that's just how she is when she's not actively under emotional distress.

Woah
omg the second one broke me
Oh my god the second one
god damn.
It’s a really good theory but how would powder know the flare was blue
Powders panic attack was extremely realistic, as someone who struggled with separation anxiety that set me back to my days as a kid
it really was
Talk about great acting and fitting animation.
Vi dropped the ball in ep7 by not just having Ekko carry Caitlyn while Vi goes to talk with Jinx.

It just that powder not heard that
it may be because claggor had more patience with her when she was a child. the way mylo treated her was very abusive.
(All this also goes for disabled people and poc too btw)
I fucking WISH I had a gay character in a TV show that I could have looked up to as a child, that would have saved me years of mental torment and denial.

I loved that Silco ends up agreeing with Vander in the end. He does actually grow as a character, something that villains rarely do.
I mean I can understand how she ended up the way she is and it is truly sad, but she has still fundamentally become a terrible person.
@@Warcodered01 It's impossible to become a good person when you are lost. You need someone to save you.
I think that may also be a factor nice assessment
Vi was even willing to risk her own life again for Powder when she saw Silco, knowing that she had no chance in her current condition against him.
that's what makes it more pain :(
Exactly! I don't understand why people always blame Vi on everything, she was a kid too! Gosh I wish people can actually think before judging things.
LoL's "explore the council archives" event put's her at "roughly 17" the day she got taken in to prison. (So right after these scenes.) Just to clarify.

Yep. Powder makes so much sense because I knew a Powder. Right down to challenges with paranoia and other mental health issues.
I also was diagnosed with BPD and I felt the pain of her abandonment.
I hate when Hollywood makes mental disorders evil/scary(not that it can’t be scary)
Her main weapon, the minigun, is also named “Pow-pow.” That’s the nickname Vi gave her.

@@alexanderplatypus3664 She does, when they reunite Vi says something like "I never wanted to abandon you, I got arrested"
We really just need to blame Marcus for arresting her.
I'm beginning to think that adults don't have the capacity either
Us with BPD took a hard hit with Arcane. We had a person who was completely and utterly relatable in the forefront. A villian at that but one that was finally understandable.
Sorry, but wanted to ask if you mean borderline or bipolar when u say BPD?
@@mrybird4044 Borderline is BPD, Bipolar is BPAD (Bipolar Affective Disorder) :)
@@xDanimothx ahh okay good to know, thank you!
same
I don't think she's exactly a villain
Very good point
And also Vi was just a child, merely a Teenager herself at that point
@@Densema and she'd also just seen her family die in front of her _for the second time._ She was old enough to clearly remember her bio parents being killed by enforcers. No wonder she reacted like that.
Honestly, if the majority of your family got killed by one member, alot of us would probably do more than slapping lmao
One of my favourite characters, super complex yet also direct... really enjoy these breakdowns.
Same, Arcane can be so simple to understand at surface and yet can be filled so much depth.
I think she knows.
she absolutely knows..
Where does she pull that information from? She never saw him and he doesnt introduce himself
@@stefanoc5099 She absolutely does not, she didn't see him beforehand and was blown away by the explosion before she could see him leave the building. She knows later on, but she did not know right then.

He's the the badguy in the show but I don't think he's evil and he definitely does love and care about her probably more than he does anyone else and I think he saw and empathised with how Vi leaving her hurt so much,
because of how Vander was once a brother to him but then turned against him and actually tried to kill him.
It's always great to see effort put into creating a complex, even relatable, antagonist.
I know right. I would want Silco as my parent than my own parents....
@@bellal320 he was a good guy only for her daughter..he did the best he could for her... he was always a bad guy who was good only for one person

There's a voice line in LoL of Jinx where she's saying "I have the best of intentions..."
Concidering how much the voice lines in LoL are fitting to the plot of Arcane, I am starting to think this origin story was thought out years before Arcane was even planned.
They apparently started Arcane as a background project 6 years ago when they made Vi as a champion.
10:29 I don't think Powder knew Silco was the "bad guy". He likely was never in her field of view through the narrow window to the wharehouse, and she had no knowledge of him prior to that. So from her PoV at this moment, he was just a kind stranger. This makes it more understandable when she clings to him.
She literally says that Silco stabbed Vander in the back in the finale. She knows Silco was the bad guy, but codependency is one helluva drug...
Powder was knocked away from the window by her explosion and never saw Silco stab the transformed Vander. She didn't even realize Vander & her foster brothers were dead until after Vi confronted her. She thought she had helped save them. She may have learned additional details of what happened later, but right now we are talking about the end of episode 3 with little Powder having no idea who Silco was.
yeah but even if she would have known then I am sure that she would have still acted the same way, , I am almost 100% sure in that
Silco, in his final momments, after all hes been trought, he was the one that never abandoned her.
I love how u also explained what vi was going through to get to the point of hitting Jinx when we know she loves her so much and would never normally do that and that she just needed a moment to regroup and control her emotions so she wouldn’t do anything further to hurt Powder
In that moment she realizes Vander was right about violence. But her years in prison make her forget again
Pretty sure it's more like 5-7 years
I would love to see VI, who was made a parent and experienced the same trauamatic event if not worse + being in prison.
@@Zoidberryable that was literally what i was saying to the other person
And some clues to Powder having hallucinations even as a kid.
It highlights the central theme of the show so well: the road to hell is paved with good intentions
I missed this detail. Nice take.
as well as vi calling her perfect contrasting with vi "agreeing" with mylo in calling her a jinx
Thank you for this. Jinx is such a tragic and complex constructed character, getting insight from a professional like you is great.
The character breakdown of Powder/Jinx, explains why a lot of people end up in toxic relationships.

The scene with ekko and jinx fighting was really good, it hit on a really deep level when watching through the series. Love to hear your thoughts!
I know I am excited to go over that scene
Every time I watch the Powder scenes there's a 100% chance of rain from the eyes. This time was no different. Vi didn't even leave her with an adult when she goes off to save Vander and maybe never come back. I remember the terror of losing my parents in the Supermarket as a kid. I can only imagine the panic attack I would have had in Powder's situation.

I think it's a testament to the show's quality and writing that you can do these deep dives.
Arcane truly is a masterclass in dramatic/poetic storytelling. I would love to see your reaction to act 2 (episodes 4-6) and act 3 (episodes 7-9) of this series, especialy the last 5 minutes of this season.
SPOILERTALK below:

I think there are two options to interpret Powders/Jinxs behaviour in the last minutes of the season.
1) she realy blames her sister for what she has become, and that she got "replaced" by Caitlyn, which would go along with Stings fantastic "What could have been"/the song in the background OR:
2) After Silcos death, Powder made the choice to embrace Jinx to push her sister away, to protect Vi from the monster she thinks she has become/the "Jinx" she has always been.
SPOILER below:
i completely agree with that, she was just sad.. take a look at how before shooting that rocket she passes by her sister, stops there and directly looks in her eyes.. i think she was hoping for some words there but nothing .. ill wait for Georgia words ... i hope she analyzes every scene with vi and jinx (and silco and caitlyn)
I see someone else having the same idea as me regarding the last scene and her motivations.
i think its both of the points... it is shown multiple times that she cant accept the caitlyn figure... as she respresents the thing that they hated the most when they were young.. a piltovian enforcer
The body language of the characters is insane well done.
nice attention to detail
They all probably had a wonderful childhood I guess.
yes and we would probably all do the same in her situation
Ok, I admit, I didn't like Powder and was getting irate with what she did in the first and third episodes. (Loved Jinx, hated Powder)
But after watching this video, I feel for Powder more.

I love how good the animation is so even a therapist can easily read her. I mean, everyone feels it even if we don't get an explanation
And all my grandmas would do is come in the room and say "SHUT UP, SHES GONE NOW"
I cried until I just couldnt cry anymore, to the point i when I cried it just to pure sadness from the inside with no tears coming out, OR turn into pure anger
But now i also moved in with my mom but we have a stupid step dad i hate WITH A BURNING PASSION but i just ignore him, and I live with my sister again...after literally 6 years
I'm so sorry for your trauma, I feel you. In a different way, but I get it.
Such an incredible breakdown of Powder and I see you're going for the Jinx hairstyle a bit. :) Thank you for making this.
You're so welcome!
🤙🏽
Perfectly explained! I would like to see you doing this for the other two arcs. And also i would like to see your perspective on Vi traumas, because many forget that Vi here it's only 16-17 years old, and the first enormous trauma she had to face when their parents were killed.
She’s that old? She looks more 14-15 in the first act
@@ayzix-polytopia3854 Oh yes, probably, thinking about it your'e right!
@@DaughterOfZaun the writer said that Powder wasn’t 7 at that time, Vi only said that to mock Caitlyn
Lol, they named her after the minigun. Not vice versa
@@frozen_eclipse Thats what I said. In the canon of the show, the Minigun came much later than the name Powder.
Well said. I hope you surround yourself with caring safe people.
I like that she went the extra mile and did mild cosplay for this video. Respect.
Star Wars: "It's about family."
Me: ...meh...
Arcane: "It's about family."

Maybe because in Star Wars diversity was really forced. Three out of movie series were emotional then it was just politics, adventure and romance. Vader did not seem real for he had no reason to trust his master.
@@finezyjnafantazja2495 forced diversity? A New Hope has 38 alien species in it.
This show is just an absolute masterpiece! incredible animations and truly amazing story telling and perfect use of music sets the tone for every scene so well. and the characters are so well written and well executed that i forgot I was watching an animation and not live action video, I've never seen anything like Arcane before, i really loved it!
I love the amount of effort put into this vid. The Jinx hairstyle + fit makes it 10x better
The scene when Powder is abandoned by Vi is jaw-droppingly good! I didn't even realise that I had tears in my eyes till it was over. What fabulous, visceral voice acting
The facial expressions were amazing in Arcane. Such a good job to the animators
I empthatize so much with Jinx that i'm almost crying everytime i see a clip staring her.
me too :(
same....
I hope she finds the person she needs. I do do remote treatment if ever there is the need
"Even though she had the best of intensions" funny choice of words there as one of Jinx's ingame lines is "I have the best intensiooons".
I didnt know that =) thanks for sharing
